“Venom” stars Academy Award® nominated actor Tom Hardy and Ryz Ahmed in an action-packed retcon of the much beloved anti-hero. According to Sony Pictures, the movie takes place in the same universe as Spiderman: Homecoming but it is technically not a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since Spidey will be officially joining the Avengers this summer, it is likely Tom Holland won’t make much of an appearance in “Venom,” which can help the franchise distinguish itself as the darker cousin of the more cheery Marvel fare.

Most notably, the trailer does not show the titular character in infected form, which is a smart move since visual effects are probably not finished and it allows some mystery to grow around the character.

“Venom” is set to hit theaters on Oct. 5, 2018
