The New York Times has reported that Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor has died after being shot during a possible robbery Monday.

“Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor has died, a day after he was shot in the leg, said family friend Richard Sharpstein,” The Times reported.

The 24-year-old safety was shot in the leg early Monday morning in his home, damaging the femoral artery.

Taylor had undergone several hours of surgery during which his heart stopped multiple times. ESPN had reported that Taylor was making progress by responding to doctors and squeezing a hand on command.

“He was on his way to becoming the best safety in the National Football League,” said ESPN’s Skip Bayless. “In the end though…and I hope it doesn’t sound insensitive, I must admit I wasn’t shocked by this given his troubled past, given the fact that he pistol-whipped some guy he thought had stolen his SUV two years ago.”
