The upcoming trial of James J. “Whitey” Bulger could be one for the ages.

According to documents filed in federal court during Bulger’s arraignment earlier this week, the Department of Justice anticipates a four-week trial, in which the government could call 30-40 witnesses.

That is not counting any witnesses that may be called by Bulger’s pricy-yet-taxpayer-funded defense team led by J.W. Carney.

Bulger is not expected back in a courtroom until September 14 at 2:30 p.m., when he faces Magistrate Judge Marianne B. Bowler for an Initial Status Conference.
