A rare 6-alarm fire sent dozens of residents into the frigid early morning air after an apartment complex on Pleasant Street in Malden burned, fire officials said.

The Boston Globe reported that several people were taken to area hospitals for treatment and some firefighters were also hurt in the blaze.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by state and local fire officials.

Malden is part of the MetroFire district, centered around Boston. MetroFire is quickly able to mobilize crews from surrounding communities in the event of a fire. Crews from some dozen towns battled this blaze while others covered the firehouses in Malden.
