The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency has issued guidelines for resident safety during the projected blizzard set to hit the area on Sunday and Monday.

“MEMA recommends all travel be completed in the morning hours before the roads get treacherous as well as postpone any unnecessary travel if possible,” said Peter Judge, an agency spokesman. “Once the heavy snow begins, please stay off of the roads during the overnight hours to allow road crews to safely complete their tasks.”

MEMA will activate the state’s emergency bunker, the Emergency Operations Center, in Framingham at 4 p.m. Sunday as well as three regional centers in Bridgewater, Tewksbury and Agawam to help coordinate state efforts to deal with up to 20 inches of snow.

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino has an emergency meeting scheduled at 10 a.m. Sunday.
