LEGO Rock Band is real, aimed at kiddie rockers, and will invade home consoles and the DS winter 2009.
The recipe is simple.‚ 1 part world renowned toy franchise already proven lucrative in video game form (see LEGO Star Wars), 1 part crazy-popular music rhythm game, and an infinite amount of unbridled enthusiasm.
The end result is a tasty and sweet concoction that is sure to, as Harmonix puts it, “appeal to families, tweens and teens.”
So are we getting a watered down Rock Band experience? Or a uniquely innovative product?
Harmonix has adamantly stated that LEGO Rock Band is kid-oriented. ‚ And will contain the relatable and memorable humor of past LEGO titles as well as total customization of everything from your rigid LEGO-block likeness to a full roadie crew.‚ So, in short, LEGO Rock Band looks to contain everything we’ve come to appreciate in the franchise but with obvious aesthetic changes.
A total of 5 tracks from the final build were announced today and are most likely indicators of the ease and catchy nature of the final setlist.

“LEGO Rock Band combines two compelling properties and creates an experience that family members of all ages will enjoy playing together as a group,” said Tom Stone, Managing Director, TT Games. “Harmonix and MTV Games are the world experts in music gameplay, and we’re genuinely thrilled to bring the unique and humor-filled LEGO experience to their Rock Band universe.”
Harmonix promises that “LEGO Rock Band supports Rock Band instruments, as well as other music game controllers,” but makes no mention of a LEGO-block inspired guitar, which to me seems ‚ a no-brainer.
With Rock Band: Unplugged on the PSP due out in June, The Beatles: Rock Band slated for a September release and LEGO Rock Band dropping in December, 2009 looks to be a huge year for Rock Band.
LEGO Rock Band hits Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, and marks the advent of the franchise on the DS this holiday 2009 season.‚ No word on specific design specifications regarding the DSi and its lack of GBA slot, if it were to be developed in a similar Guitar Hero: On Tour style utilizing a guitar grip of sorts.
