Epic Games, the studio behind the Gears of War series, announced today that their next project, Fortnite, will be available for purchase on Xbox One, PC, Mac, and PS4 on July 25.

The game was announced all the way back in 2011, so the fact that it is only now arriving via Early Access does suggest a turbulent development period. We do know that Cliff Bleszinski, one of the lead creatives at Epic, left the company back in 2012 to take a hiatus from game development. However, how involved he was in the development of Fortnite is not known.

Either way, having a date set in stone at least for a playable Early Access build of the game is good news. Fortnite is a Minecraft-style base builder where groups of players work together to craft bases, loot goodies, and fight back against hordes of monsters.

Creative Director Darren Sugg said via press release:

“Bringing Fortnite to life has been a true labor of love by a talented and dedicated team over many years. We’re excited to share the experience and start playing along with more gamers in Early Access this summer.”

The game will also have a few tiers of exclusive content available for purchase and pre-order. While most of it is in-game heroes and goodies, the two higher tiers also include full game codes to give out to a few of your lucky friends. Pre-ordering the game will also let you play it four days early.

We will surely hear more about Fortnite when E3 kicks off next week.
