At a press conference today Nintendo announced that they are teaming up with Japanese online company DeNA to now make smartphone games.

Additionally, Nintendo has announced the code-name for their next console is the NX (Note: code-names are not likely to be used on release of the console, similarly to how the Xbox One was code-named Durango).

According to Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata, the new console is described as a “brand new concept.”

Nintendo has a long history of being reluctant to share their creations outside their own consoles, until today. Now, Nintendo will be working with DeNA to create new games using existing characters and worlds.

“Nintendo has decided to deploy its video game business on smart devices, but it is not because we have lost our passion or vision for the business of dedicated video game systems,”  Iwata says.

No word on any exact games yet, if they will remake old games to release on smartphones, or a speculated release date for their new console.
