We all knew that last week’s release of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 would be big, but none of us expected this. The release of the latest chapter in the blockbuster shooter series has broken movie box office, book and game sales records for five day worldwide sell-through in dollars.

Grossing more than $775 million in its first five days, Modern Warfare 3 eclipsed $650 million record set by last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops and the $550 million one achieved by 2009’s Modern Warfare 2.

“Call of Duty has become the first entertainment property in history to set five-day launch records for three consecutive years across all forms of entertainment,” said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick.

Not only did Modern Warfare 3 make a huge dent in sales, it also made a huge splash on Xbox Live. Not only did the game finally dethrone Call of Duty: Black Ops from its spot atop the activity boards, but it’s reported that 3.3 million users were online playing Modern Warfare 3 simultaneously on November 8th, marking a new record for the service. That doesn’t impress you? How about the fact that over seven millon multiplayer hours were logged on the game in its first day available.
