We here at Blast loved Deus Ex: Human Revolution, but some are calling foul at one of the game’s NPC characters for being a racist sterotype of African Americans.

The controversy surrounds an NPC known as Jar Jar Binks Latitia the trash lady, who the player encounters digging through trash bins and using what’s being referred to as slave era dialect.

In a response issued to Games Radar, Square Enix says that the character isn’t meant as a negative view of any race, but apologizes if they offended anyone.

“Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a fictional story which reflects the diversity of the world’s future population by featuring characters of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds,” said Square. “While these characters are meant to portray people living in the year 2027, it has never been our intention to represent any particular ethnic group in a negative light.”

Here’s the video of Latitia in action. What’s your verdict?
