The only known photo of Billy the Kid
DENVER — The only known and authenticated photograph of famed Old West outlaw and gunman Billy the Kid (aka William Bonney and William Henry McCarty) just sold for $2.3 million at auction.
The 130-year-old tintype photo was expected to sell for $300,000 to $400,000 at Brian Lebel’s 22nd Annual Old West Show & Auction in the Denver Merchandise Mart in Denver on Saturday, but the price exploded as bidders battled over the famous and iconic photo of the American frontiersman.
Billy the Kid was 21 when he was killed in Fort Sumner, Texas.
