“Modern Family” hit a season low for a new episode Wednesday, with a 3.8 in the demo. The show had been topping the 5.0 earlier in the season — are viewers abandoning the once-mighty hit?

“Happy Ending” aired after “Family,” with two episodes; they averaged a 2.5, hardly a stunner in debut though likely to see a second season with those numbers.

At 8 pm, “The Middle” was thankful it was already renewed; “Better with You” likely rode out its last legs.

“American Idol” was typically strong, averring a 7.1 in the demo over 90 minutes. “Breaking In” didn’t really do that afterwards; it drew just a 2.8 out of “AI’s” 8.0 in the half-hour proceeding, a 65% drop. Retention doesn’t really factor grealty into renewals, but that’s still a bad sign.

“Survivor” was low at 8 pm, averaging less than a 3.0 in the demo. “Criminal Minds” was better at 9 with a 3.5; it’s spinoff “Suspect Behavior” led the 10 pm hour with a 2.5.
