Astronaut Mark Kelly, the husband of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, says his wife has improved so much that she gave him a 10-minute neck rub recently.

Giffords, conscious, has been unable to speak because of a throat tube helping her breathe.

“She’s in the ICU. You know, gone through this traumatic injury. And she spent 10 minutes giving me a neck massage,” Kelly said in an interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer airing Tuesday. “It’s so typical of her that no matter how bad the situation might be for her, you know, she’s looking out for other people.”

The suspected shooter, 22-year-old Jared Loughner, remains in federal custody after allegedly killing six people in a rampage January 8 outside a Tucson, Ariz. supermarket during an event held by Giffords. Giffords, who was shot in the head, was among 13 people injured.
