A veteran fire chief died suddenly while out on a call early Tuesday morning.

Karen Hand was chief of the Broome County, N.Y. Volunteer Emergency Squad. She sent into sudden cardiac arrest while on a call, according to FireFighterCloseCalls.com.

Hand has 17 years of service with the volunteer department.

Broome is a county near the Pennsylvania border, not to be confused with the small town called Broome, in Schoharie County, about 20 miles southwest of Albany.

Hand was also the deputy EMS coordinator for the Broome County Office of Emergency Management for the past 20 years and was a member of the local Critical Incident Stress Management team.

No details were released on the call she was responding to.
