The adult services listings have been closed as of Friday, with a black  censor bar covering the link where the listings normally appear.  This move comes after years of pressure to remove the ads, the latest being about two weeks ago, when an open letter from 17 state attorneys urged Craigslist to shut down the section.

The concerns with Craigslist’s adult services page included the site’s inability to block potentially illegal ads, such as those promoting prostitution. The site has previously been described by Connecticut’s attorney general as a “blatant internet brothel.”

The present move to shut the shut the site down has been welcomed by those who opposed it, but there has been no comment yet from Craigslist as to why the listings were closed and what their policy will be going forward.
