Summit Entertainment released a statement today confirming that filming of the spy-thriller “Red” has begun in Toronto. The movie is armed with a star-studded cast featuring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Richard Dreyfuss, and more.

“I’m so excited at the phenomenal cast that … our script has attracted,” said film producer Lorenzo di Boneventura.

Based on the DC Comics graphic novel by Warren Ellis, “Red” already has a cult following sure to make it a box office hit. Willis plays retired CIA agent Frank Moses, who is forced back into the game by a hitman. If the script stays true to its comic book origins, “Red” will be full of action as Moses hunts down the assassin.

Director Robert Schwentke (“The Time Traveler’s Wife”) told MTV News that viewers can expect a much lighter tone from the film than the original story. "I love the script," Schwentke said. "It’s very funny, which the comic book isn’t. I like switching gears and this is a movie that allows me to do something lighthearted in tone and is also an action movie."

“Red” will be shot in and around Toronto for nine weeks before they head out on the road and wrap up in New Orleans. The movie hits theaters on October 22, 2010.
