What’s this, a second game announcement preceding the to-be-epic E3 2009 conference next week?‚  Indeed, only this time it’s not of a gore-fest Gladiator game, it’s the often rumored, but now confirmed, Star Wars Battlefront Elite Squadron for the handheld systems, DS and PSP, to hit shelves this fall.

LucasArts, creators of damn fine Star Wars games, is at it again, this time with lofty promises that Elite Squadron will be the “deepest and most action-packed Star Wars Battlefront game ever.”‚  Sure, that’s just marketing mumbo jumbo, but fans of the Battlefront series are a dedicated and critical bunch, so let’s just hope LucasArts knows what they’re doing, as they also announced a fresh take on the series.

That new spin is the ability to start your fight on the comfort of terra firma, then commandeer a vehicle and fight your way through space, and finally land your ship on interstellar-traveling capital starships and raise hell there, too.

Furthermore, LucasArts seems to be pushing the character customization button this time around, and pushing it a lot.‚  On the PSP you’ll have the ability to deck out your hero with tons of weapons, armor, even manipulate their species, gender, appearance, and strengths, among other unlisted (at the moment) and unlockable goodies.

Everybody loves multiplayer, right?‚  You betcha, and in Elite Squadron on PSP you can take to the skies, or ground, in a frenzied 16 player all-out battle, or on the DS with up to four players in a smaller, but probably equally fun skirmish.

Check out the first batch of screenshots for the title below in their awesomeness for PSP, and with a sense of meh for DS.
