Adams Management Group, a contractor for one of the main Big Dig construction companies, was charged Tuesday in federal court with submitting false claims on a federal highway project after a federal investigation revealed the firm allegedly engaged in a scheme to falsely categorize laborers to overcharge the government.

The investigation alleges that, beginning in 2002 through 2006, Adams, a subcontractor to McCourt Construction Co., engaged in a scheme to overbill the Central Artery/Tunnel Project by falsely categorizing apprentice workers as journeymen on work performed.

The company faces a fine of up to $500,000.

According to the FBI, McCourt and two of its managers have previously been convicted in federal court regarding the same overbilling scheme. Three employees of Massachusetts Electric Construction Company, another McCourt subcontractor on the Big Dig, were also convicted in the same type of scam.
