A Beverly, Mass. man who’s accused of groping a woman who turned out to be an undercover transit police officer has been ordered to stay away from the MBTA transit lines.

Jeffrey D. Nichols, 51, was released on a bail warning Tuesday after his arraignment in Boston Municipal Court on indecent assault and battery charges. He was arrested Jan. 16 after police said he touched a plainclothes detective in a sexual manner.

Police opened up an undercover investigation after receiving a tip from a passenger about someone fitting Nichols’ description. He was arrested at the State Street Station.

He’ll have to stay away from trains and stations throughout his case.

“If he does not abide by that order, or if he reoffends in any way, Nichols could be held without bail,” authorities said Tuesday.
