Sources have told E! Online that Rachel Weisz (of the mind-bending The Fountain) is being considered for the role of leather-loving Catwoman in the upcoming sequel to The Dark Knight. Warner Brothers isn’t officially saying anything and Christopher Nolan hasn’t made a peep about returning as director, but E reports:

Despite some recent interviews in which he down-played the possibility of returning as director again,‚ Christopher Nolan‚ (who helmed‚ Knight) will for sure be back directing the third flick, we’re assured by a production mole.‚ Christian Bale‚ will obviously rejoin his director pal, and we’re very‚ pleased to report that he’ll be playing a “sexier” Bruce Wayne.

As much as I enjoyed Weisz in The Fountain (and yes, I was minimally inebriated during my viewing), I can’t see her picking up Selina Kyle’s whip convincingly. Then again, I was a Heath Ledger nay-sayer in the beginning so what do I know? As far as a three-peat on blockbuster status for the franchise goes, I’m going to say, as long as he’s back to direct: Nolan knows best.

What do you think of the choice? Also, hit me with your best Catwoman actress suggestions?

Anne Hathaway will make a great catwoman than Weisz. She’d look perfect with Christian. They’re both hot.

Where is the mention of Courtney Love? She has been mentioned for the past few weeks as well. I can see her picking up the whip more convincingly.

Anne Hathaway does not have Rachel’s range as an actor. Rachel would be a perfect choice.

A “sexier” Bruce Wayne? Sign me up! Christian is hot enough just being the normal Bruce Wayne. Wow. I cannot WAIT for this new film.

Having a Catwoman in Nolan’s Batman saga is a pretty awful idea to begin with. For a gritty crime drama series with both feet planted firmly in a relatively realistic Gotham dystopia, adding Selina Kyle to the mix just seems a bit silly, not to mention blasé.

She already got her own movie (anyone remember that bomb? More importantly, anyone know why it constantly airs on AMC?), and she was perfectly suited to the Tim Burton Batman sequel which did the character justice.

Let’s let Christopher Nolan (fingers crossed that he comes back) pick the villains and the cast. He’s done such a fabulous job so far, any speculation is just going to miss the mark by a long shot.

…Of course, if it were up to me to cast Catwoman, I’d pick Lauren Bacall. Meow!

You can’t have a series of Batman movies without including Catwoman at some point. The character’s origin goes all the way back to the 1940s, nearly to the creation of Batman himself. She’s always been one of his most important adversaries, as essential as the Joker, and her significance has increased throughout the decades with legendary performances, as the Joker has. So it would be odd if she weren’t in the next Batman movie. Her importance shouldn’t be overlooked just because of one awful movie. But Nolan needs to find an actress capable of pulling it off, because it’s very easy to ruin a character as complexing as Catwoman…as Halle Berry well knows.
