Hoping to preempt Rockstar’s impending Grand Theft Auto IV for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Nintendo has pushed up the release date for Mario Kart Wii to April 27.

Mario Kart Wii is the latest chapter in one of Nintendo’s core — and most beloved — franchises.

The game will feature 32 race courses, including 16 brand new tracks and several others that have been updated from previous games. There will also be 10 battle courses as well. Gamespot reported recently that Mario Kart Wii will also feature 12-player online racing, with two players being able to share one console online.

Mario Kart 64 was available quickly and often bundled with the Nintendo 64 console. The Wii version comes long after the console’s release and at a pivotal gaming time. It has been one of the most antipated Wii titles.
