In 1990, at the insistence of a family who lost a son in an aviation disaster (United flight 811), United Airlines spent more than 100 million dollars to retrieve a cargo door of a 747 from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Without doubt, it is possible for Air France to recover the victims and the aircraft from flight 447, it’s just a question of money.

If you don’t know what “fly by wire” is, how can you possibly know anything about aircraft failures.

Hans,

Thank you for your comment. Boeing cannot speak to reliability of the Airbus 330, but I know that they would say the the modern Boeing Fleet is immune to aircraft failure. Poor weather, lightning, wind shears, etc. These are all known hazards and will not cause the airplane to fail.

Could you please explain a bit more of the ‘fly by wire’ system. That sounds interesting.

I am sure that Boeing would tell you that is very possible for the plane to fail. That is why Boeing designed it’s fly-by-wire system for the 777 with a different philosophy that was used in the Airbus 330 that crashed.

The plane itself should not fail. Boeing engineers will tell you that it is impossible for the plane to fail. What can fail are the safety margins. Each airplane system is adroitly backed up, so that if that system fails the back-up system will kick in. As far as massive electrical system failure, that’s impossible. All of the electrical systems are independent. The failure of one cannot affect other systems. So what could cause a massive, plane-wide electrical system failure of the kind that almost certainly occurred? An Explosion.

Rumor has it, that there are those in the intelligence community who are very concerned that an EMP device was used, leading to a cascaded destruction of the electrical systems on the plane, but not causing an explosion. The conspiracy nuts are saying that it was a “test run” of the device, in order for it to be used in a future simultabeous attack of planes over major cities. I hope that’s not true.
