Troy Davis was put to death by injection in Georgia Wednesday night, after last-ditch attempts by his lawyers, supporters, lawmakers and celebrities failed to stay the execution.
The execution occurred after the Supreme Court denied the last possible appeal for a stay.
Davis was executed for the 1989 slaying of Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail.
Controversy erupted after seven of the nine witnesses against him — the witnesses who were not also police officers — recanted their testimony, which included eyewitness accounts and a jailhouse snitch saying Davis confessed in prison.
Figures from US Congressmen to the pope had all joined a petition hoping to stay the execution, but Davis’ fate was sealed when the Supreme Court, in short order, rejected the appeal.
