Electric bikes are the new way to commute which gives you the fun of riding a bike plus the added power for those who may have a longer commute, live in a hilly area or are worried about their fitness levels. Electric bikes really are for everyone – young and old alike.
With its eco-friendly and health-improving attributes, electric biking might just be in the early stages of a full-blown renaissance. The electric bicycle has been called the forerunner in the electrification of alternative transport.
The global market for electric bikes has taken off over the last decade. Leading the charge is China where there are four electric bikes for every car on the road. Electric Bikes are quickly becoming popular in Western countries as well. The growth of the electric bike has also found its way into Europe. Last year, in The Netherlands nearly one-third of the money spent on bicycles went to purchasing electric bikes.
Growth in United States has been much slower with only 250,000 sales last year, but the interest is definitely on the rise.
With burgeoning markets across the world, the electric bicycle has turned into an US$11 billion industry.
The reasons that electric bicycles are becoming so popular is mainly due to their superior advantage over other alternative modes of transport like public transport, walking and regular bikes

Not all the reasons quoted in the article have the same value but the key advantages are clear from my personal experience riding several such bikes including in hilly terrain. I also concur with Ali Reza Kohani in that some of the bikes are not as ride-able (or as appealing) as some conventional bikes so I understand why some may want to convert or build an electric bike. The weight of the bikes also affects user convenience, ideally they should be about 20kg or less. However, the functionality of electric bicycles over-rides design when you add up all the benefits. One company I found that seems to combine decent design with quality build and functionality is Urban Mover, and if you are in Australia, you can visit their website at http://www.urbanmover.com.au
The editor in me has compelled me to point out the typo in #12:
“12. They are fin to ride”
Also, I want to add that John’s points are very true — some e-bikes do not perform as well as others (especially on hills!). A good option for Canadians are OHM electric bikes (http://ohmcycles.com). Their bikes have let people make it up some of San Francisco’s hilliest areas, and weigh less than a lot of other e-bikes.
