I couldn't take any more of their slow servers, I had to switch to a company called <a href="http://www.greengeeks.com" rel="nofollow">GreenGeeks.com</a>. Since then, my site has been running problem free and I can actually get into the control panel to manage my site! I do not recommend IX Web Hosting at all! My website has been compromised twice in two days, with spyware junk added to my RSS feed. It's an easy fix, but as we both know that isn't the point. I have always found their web servers to be very reliable with minimal downtime. When you look at reviews of their service you will always see the 99.9% uptime promise achieved. However I see a big weakness in their SQL Server environment. My own website has been intermittently available due to overloading on the shared MySQL server. IX Web Hosting have acknowledged this and their solution is to transfer my database to a "less loaded" MySQL server. It seems to me that if you are hosting a basic site which does not use an SQL database behind it then you wont see these problems at all. Unfortunately, with the shared nature of their "Shared Hosting" SQL Servers, they appear open to abuse. I also think by their nature it also makes it difficult to estimate/project future load on them. You mentioned a Virtual Private SQL server as part of your solution.
