A firmware update, scheduled for April 15 will give Sony’s PlayStation 3 console something that home theater junkies have been asking for since its inception: support for DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and DTS-HD Master Audio.

DTS-HD is a lossless audio format capable of eight discreet channels. It is one of the, if not the best surround sound format available in consumer home theater systems.

While this may not mean much to the average consumer, critics are hailing the move, some going as far as to say that it makes the PS3 the “perfect Blu-ray player.”

Essentially, the inclusion means that games and movies can now feature an even more dynamic soundtrack; which will in turn take up less space on the disc due to a unique coding style. This leaves room for more visual and gameplay data.

The first titles to take full advantage of the new DTS-HD components are expected to hit shelves later this year, but for now PS3 owners can brag over the fact that their system, dogged by so many, can be considered one of the most technologically advanced products in the market.
