On January 14 Ringo Starr will release Liverpool 8, his first new album with Capitol/EMI since 1974′s Goodnight Vienna. The album’s title track first single debuted on December 4 but Starr will launch the album on January 12 with a hometown performance in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

Liverpool 8, “refers to the section of Liverpool where I used to live,” said Starr. “The song was actually Dave Stewart’s idea, as a mini autobiographical travelogue: ‘I was a sailor first … ‘ and then, ‘Liverpool I left you,’ because I did. ‘but I never let you down,’ which is true.”

Starr and Stewart have known each other but this is the first time they have collaborated in an album. The 12 tracks are co-written by Starr and were recorded in England and California.

“The writing of the records is always the same,” Starr explained, “it’s the same group of guys and we all sit together and write about what’s happening.” The “group of guys” included production and music masters like Gary Burr, Steve Dudas, Mark Hudson, Sean Hurley and Zac Rae, to name few.

Since his career in the 1960s with The Beatles, Starr has had solo career as a singer, songwriter, drummer, musical collaborator and even actor. Drawing inspiration from classic blues, soul, country, honky-tonk and rock ‘n’ roll, he continues to his involvement in modern music with his last studio album, Choose Love, being released in 2005.

As time goes on, he added, there is more and more of his personality in his music, and the songs on Liverpool 8 feel personal. Peace and love are Starr’s primary motors and Liverpool 8 delivers this universal message.
