Hello Ms. Rice, I’m hoping this is a place where I can get a message to you – I’d LOVE to talk to you! I’m an over-30 woman who accidentally fell through the Twilight Franchise rabbit hole after the movies started; and I just can’t continue watching this obviously amateur stuff anymore. I managed to get to Eclipse (barely); but JEEZ, I really wish I had read your reviews before I started with them. I find it just so amazing that the movie studio actually put this story out just the way it was written without detouring from it. And yeah, even the fact that it made it into a book is mind-boggling! I’m kind of looking for backup… I’ve written my own blog up on Blogger called, “A Different Twilight”. I’d really appreciate it if you would take a look at it and give me your opinion. I’d put the link in here, but I’m not sure your comment section will accept a link. Well, you girls beat me too the sexism and relationship arguement, but I’m glad you did and I couldn’t have made my point any better. Thankfully, I was not planning on seeing this movie in theaters, but now I’m wondering if I should see it at all. Maybe if I’m at a party and we watch it, otherwise no. I’ll stick to the Potter Movies, thank you very much.

I also now direct people straight to your first article and re-read it myself from time to time, just for giggles. Thank you Ms Rice for having the sense to see through the crap in the books.

Kellen, you are my hero. Yet another great (and accurate) “Twilight” review. Nowadays when people ask me about my objections to the Twilight Saga, I direct them to your “Twilight Sucks (and not in a good way)” article just to save time.

And ladies, I’m so glad you all beat me to the punch with the feminism/unhealthy relationship discussion. My baby cousin (she’s 14) loves “Twilight”, and I don’t want to discourage her from reading, but I also don’t want her growing up to want the kind of relationship Edward and Bella have. Also, I want her to have more of a personality (read: a personality, period) than Bella.

Still, I know a lot of intelligent people who really love the “Twilight” books… and I don’t understand why.

I always thought that Edward inspired an Electra complex in girls. I mean, his constant nanny-goating about her “safety” and “what’s best for her” can only be read so many ways. In the text, his functions are limited to protecting her, loving her, knowing everything, and resisting a very taboo urge to bone her. (And place EMPHATICALLY sarcastic air finger-quotes around any positive verbs, please.) I agree 1000% percent that the couple displays a really sick abusive behavior pattern that’s horrifying to present to young women. But I always interpreted his appeal as a bit of a Daddy complex… I think a more emotionally mature reader senses that a lover’s role is much more expansive and complex, and rejects it as creepiness.

…Also, f these books.

As a girl who’s been in an abusive relationship, I’m incredibly appalled by the Twilight series’ popularity. I’m even more unnerved by the legions of Twihards who consider it the ultimate form of “love” and fantasize about experiencing it themselves. They often declare that critics just don’t understand because they’ve never felt that passion and love themselves and lack the life experience.

donâ€™t know what the hell *your* idea of sexism and feminism is but I can assure you that it isnâ€™t Twilight haters who are modifying it. Bella doesnâ€™t make choices. Edward makes them for her. She doesnâ€™t want to drive home with him? Tough, he wants her to and heâ€™ll drag her to his car if she tries to escape. She doesnâ€™t want to apply to a certain university? Fine, heâ€™ll forge her signature on the application. She wants to see her best friend? Itâ€™s not happening unless Edward wants that, and if she doesnâ€™t like it, heâ€™ll disable her car and have his sister keep her under house arrest. Sheâ€™s said she doesnâ€™t want to go somewhere? Okay, then heâ€™ll go over her head and get her dad involved so she has no choice but to go. And sheâ€™ll never oppose any of this, because heâ€™s always got her best interests at heart, just like both abusers and those who are abused claim in real life. Thereâ€™s no modification or projection on our part going on at all; this stuff is all right there, being frighteningly obvious.

At what point in my comment about Bellaâ€™s fear of Edwardâ€™s reaction to her seeing Jacob did I say that it would be okay if it was a man who was scared of a woman in this situation? Bella, upon seeing Edwardâ€™s car behind her (you know, in the scene where he tailgates her all the way to Angelaâ€™s house for no other reason than to intimidate her and make sure he knows *exactly* where she is, ever the expression of true love), is genuinely terrified of Edwardâ€™s reaction to her doing something completely innocent and reasonable. Never does she think â€œHow dare he treat me this way?â€ She describes herself as â€œchickenâ€, too afraid to â€œfaceâ€ him, and on her way to see him she describes herself as â€œjumpyâ€, â€œanxiousâ€, â€œnervousâ€, as though *sheâ€™s* the one in the wrong even though she is SEEING. HER. BEST. FRIEND. and Edward has absolutely *no* right to stop her doing this. Itâ€™s a scene that clearly illustrates the level of control Edward has over her. It would be as much of a problem if their roles were reversed. Itâ€™s still abuse and control no matter whether the man or the woman is in the position of power. Only at no point in the Twilight series is Bella the one with the power. Sheâ€™s the archetypal submissive little woman the entire way through.

Women in real abusive situations? Like, women who are being stalked? Women whose partners stop them seeing their friends? Women whose partners mess with their heads? Whose partners belittle them? Women in relationships with people like Edward? Hey, how about we try to stop more women getting into this situation by opposing something that insists that these things are romantic? Or, in conclusion: yes, really.

WOW…seriously?? The novels are FICTION. Reading them is not going to make you smarter (thats for sure) but it’s a lot better than drinking, drugs, watching tv, gaming, internet, sex, porn, etc. What’s wrong with having an imagination and getting people to read something (besides gossip magazines and crap on the internet). I was surprised that I was even stimulated by the novels, but now I remember what it’s like to actually dream once in awhile. It’s amazing what that can do for your mental state of mind, even if it is over a stupid book. So, thank you to Stephanie Meyers for having an imagination and keeping it simple so people can fill in the blanks themselves. There are worse things in life and I’m just glad to see young (and old) people passionate about something that actually involved reading (and the use of their brain). Many people are suffering in their lives with issues much worse than those that you speak of that (are supposedly) in the book. If you ask me, it is what you make of it. Give people a little bit of credit!! Obviously there are NO vampires, people know that it’s not a real story. They understand that the feelings that the characters have are a result of them being “vampire” or “wolf” not human. So that obviously sets those feelings apart from “real life” feelings. People that DO think it’s real…well it’s just a symptom of their problem (NOT the cause). Come on! There are worse things in life! If people want to get passionate about FICTION vampire books, good for them. They are reading for these books for fun, not to gain some sort of grasp on life or love. (Let those girls who are…try to find something in real life similar to the books…not going to happen.)
