It's a classic fairy tale. Gaston (not Gustav), Beauty's father being an inventor, all that stuff, is only from the Disney version. Ditto, the wolves. Flinn's novel was adapted from the original, not the Disney movie (and Cruel Intentions was based on the play and later movie, Dangerous Liasons). But there was Beauty and the Beast long before Disney adapted it in the 90’s. It’s a classic fairy tale.
