I believe part of the problem with the percentage of increased autism diagnosis has a lot to do with the lack of acomodations for all other health impaired diagnosis. I recently had my godchild moved from the diagnosis of developmentally delayed to autism under the aspberger syndrom because he was showing some traits that could not be categorized under any other diagnosis and although he is not autistic by placing him in that category he will recieve more personal assistance in the classroom, an aid, that can help him keep up with the class.
I believe the special education departments needs more funds from the goverment so that other diagnosis can accomodate an aid if necessary without having to place the children in the autism spectrum. Otherwise you will continue to see those numbers rising.
