Steven Amato, 53, has been sentenced to two back-breaking years in prison for health care fraud and tax evasion, the Associated Press reports.

Amato pleaded guilty to three counts of income tax evasion and one count of health care fraud this June.

Amato did not fully report his income over a four-year period; he failed to report a bank account he opened which held a sum of more than $840,000.  Amato also submitted false and exaggerated patient reports so he could collect additional funds from insurance companies, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Last Wednesday, in addition to his two-year sentence the defendant was ordered to pay a fine of $10,000.  Judge D. Brock Hornby of Portland’s U.S. District Court also ordered Amato to compensate the affected insurance companies in the sum of $100,000, reports the Portland Press Herald.

Amato has already paid the Internal Revenue Service more than $700,000 in back taxes and interest.
