Facebook adds a new feature, entitled Trending, in order to better compete with Twitter.

This new module highlights the most popular topics across the social network at any given moment.  It lists hot topics at the top right hand corner of the news stream.

This is an important addition for Facebook as it battles with Twitter, particularly in terms of most active social network for breaking news and discussion during live TV events. While this one change is unlikely to give Facebook an advantage over already-popular Twitter, it is a step in that direction.

Trending will gradually be made available in select countries and the via the web portal only for now.

Facebook is currently testing Trending for mobile and hopes to roll out that feature soon.
