Sprint, one of two major American cell carriers not to currently have an iPhone in its arsenal, will add the iPhone 5 in October, SlashGear reported.

SlashGear cited a report in the Wall Street Journal, which cited “sources familiar with the matter.”

The move would be a big get for Sprint, which, like its lumbering Nextel brand, is perceived as a business service. The iPhone will cater to business clients while welcoming in consumers who may be impressed with Sprint’s generous data packages that (currently) offer unlimited downloads with no throttling.

Last week, AT&T leaked that the new and improved next generation iPhone would come out in the fall.

Spring Nextel Corporation stock was up $0.33 — 10 percent — to close at $3.59 on Tuesday.

The iPhone 5 will most certainly support 4G, and SlashGear also reported that the phone would be dual-mode GSM/CDMA and work worldwide.

T-Mobile looks to be left in dark, with no reports or rumors to indicate it will be able to provide an iPhone to its customers.
