Jess seduces Oliver (True Blood's Ryan Kwanten) into an out-of-character one night stand on Valentine's Day.

The collective anxiety of my fellow twentysomethings in anticipation of this Valentine’s Day was downright disturbing. More than any other year I can recall, the rebels and the traditionalists fled to Facebook and Twitter to voice their grievances. Either those in relationships devalued those who were single, by overemphasizing their good fortune, or single folk devalued the holiday so that those with valentines would feel as though their festivities were trivial. I’d imagine February 14 and the surroundings days are the therapists’ busy season (aside from the winter holidays) because it’s sickening how much weight is put on the perceived stability of our love lives. The message is: no one bought you chocolates or flowers on this designated holiday, well then you are less worthy of personhood! You actually celebrate this inane occasion? Then you’re unworthy for playing into romantic notions that only exist to increase profits for the floral and greeting card industries!

In any case, the discourse surrounding Valentine’s Day had been largely antagonistic. Tonight’s “New Girl” tackled the overriding sentiment that romance, however fleeting, is required on this arbitrary day. Each of our pals deal with it in strange yet characteristic ways that ensured authentic laughs by marrying the insecurity of the holiday with the neurotic and ego-driven tendencies of the roommates. Jess’ game plan for avoiding sorrow and reflection is to “look for some strange” a.k.a willing participants in a one night stand. Schmidt steps up as her coach and prospective wingman in avoiding attachment. Despite Nick’s general apathy for the holiday, he and Julia (Lizzy Caplan, again) set out to embrace the holiday that has scorned them with a typical night out. Winston, agrees to a night-in with Shelby since he’s walking on eggshells repairing the damage his former arrogant baller self caused.

Jess’ pursuit of a hit-it-and-quit-it ended up a stroke of genius that forced Zooey Deschanel and the writers to explore how she adapts to the quirks of others. True Blood’s heartthrob, Ryan Kwanten, plays Oliver, a man so dumb and dull that his most common conversation piece is tacos. Jess tells Schmidt she’s hit the jackpot, because zero bond is established between them aside from physical attraction. But a Lemony Snicket-ish series of unfortunate events unfolds, foiling Jess’ efforts to satisfy her “dirty twirlies” (a Jess-ence phrase meaning she is horny).

The convoluted scenario starts to take shape when Jess requests Schmidt drive Oliver and her to his place (neither of them drove to the bar). Initially reticent, Schmidt obliges. At Oliver’s place, Schmidt gets sucked into watching a movie, but eventually extricates himself, only to find his tires have been stolen by “youths.” Cece (of course Jess’ supermodel friend) calls him, frustrated with her boy toy, Kyle, who’s tripping balls off a slice of pizza topped with shrooms. Schmidt then asks Cece for a ride, so she swings by. In a somewhat shocking turn, Oliver’s ex (and roommate) appears, fuming over his makeup session with Jess. Vulnerable and seeking revenge she kisses a shirtless Kyle shortly after he, Cece and Schmidt arrive much to Jess’ chagrin. When Cece tries to separate her man from this unstable woman a catfight ensues. Thus, Schmidt and Cece and out-of-this-world high Kyle leave for the loft. I’m sure reading that was as exhausting as it was to watch. There is comedic payoff sprinkled throughout, but it struck me a bit like a scenic route to arrive at the twists to come…

Nick shows up at Julia’s office to pick her up for dinner reservations, but she’s deeply entrenched in her work. Despite his disappointment we get to enjoy the company of Julia’s intern, Cliff (Clark Duke). Duke fits seamlessly into this cast, delivering many awkward gems as he acts on his wildly apparent attraction to his boss. Another rewarding side effect of Nick’s waiting is the reveal of his life immediately post-law school. Needless to say, it’s L.O.L.L-worthy, involving dressing in drag, so, win. Unfortunately for Nick his story’s personal epiphany that he didn’t want to work for someone else his whole life encourages Cliff to quit, inciting Julia’s half-hearted attempt to win him back: “Cliff, no! We’re gonna start paying you so soon.” This stunt sends Nick to the doghouse, but he earns his way back into her good graces by incorrectly organizing her papers and their mutual appreciation for each other comes to the forefront. It’s a big step for them, realizing that this inconsequential celebration meant something to him. Julia also channels Jess by donning assorted Valentine’s headgear, recalling her reluctance from “Jess and Julia” where her discomfort with cuteness was a major point of contention.

Winston also gets his not-according-to-plan evening when he is surprised with a girls’ night at Shelby’s apartment. Realizing that his tolerance of the evening could pay dividends as he tries to prove his mettle as a suitor, he endures even offering her friends decent, albeit silly, advice: “Seriously, Tia, you do not wanna be with a man who has fancier underpants than you.” A universal truth I’d say. At any rate, Shelby apologizes for the night not meeting his expectations, but she confesses it to be a test, a slightly spiteful one too. She reminds Winston of his dick-ish actions on Valentine’s Day 2008 where he stood her up. Ashamed, Winston wonders whether or not he deserves a second chance, but Shelby affirms him saying that here he is getting one anyway. The door then literally closes on her resentment and implications of naughtiness ensue.

The wrap-up to the Jess/Schmidt fiasco is messy, yet satisfying. Jess leaves early when Oliver starts to cry over his ex who watches them makeout while munching on his beloved tacos. Jess helps them reconcile (I mean, duh), Skypes with his grandma in Hawaii briefly (okay…) then returns home. Schmidt subsequently instills some pearls of hookup master wisdom, saying Jess doesn’t want a stranger she wants someone she knows who won’t make it weird, who she can leave in the morning without being sucked into the horrors of a post-coitus brunch. Jess connects the dots, realizing Schmidt would be the ideal candidate according to that criteria. I thought Schmidt was too obviously manipulating her into sleeping with him and that Jess should not have been so swayed, but I suppose her “dirty twirlies” make her do crazy things. So she grabs her “hundy pack” of condoms (a hell of a sight gag), about to knock on Schmidt’s door when Nick starts her calling her out on her absurd behavior. She understandably retreats, but behind his bedroom door it’s revealed that it would have been a fruitless endeavor because SCHMIDT AND CECE ARE TOTES GONNA DO IT!!! I found it believable as Cece’s inexplicable attraction has been alluded to for some time now, and with Kyle off in outer space she was vulnerable and geared up for sex.

Overall, the conclusions to the respective romances felt earned and gratifying. If Jess had hooked up with the “True Blood” hunk, it would have felt too easy. Plus, I like that she was pushed to act out of character, but going through with the act would have been asking me to believe her Jess-ence wasn’t so firm. Also, what better way to depict her desperation for Valentine’s physicality then giving in to Schmidt. Cece made perfect sense, especially when you consider their mutual affection for the book, “The Phantom Tollbooth” (see L.O.L.Ls). Nick and Winston were beat for beat solid too. Both encounter obstacles that were deserved, and showed off their better qualities to weasel their way into their woman’s arms.

The successes didn’t entirely overshadow the mental claustrophobia though. I know as a holiday, the episode serves as a novelty, but I’d caution the series about “too many cooks.” Great guest stars also bolster this episode into comedic excellence as the night felt well-rounded in its joke material. The standout lines ranged from pop culture references to character oddities to more off-beat Nick back story to situational hilarity. I’d say “New Girl’s” efficiency was exemplary, utilizing V-day for story momentum and stylized laughs. For softening the blow of singles anxiety, that this wretched yet cutesy day inevitably conjures up, with an at times unsettling and frantic, yet strikingly effective rendering of what happens when we put our hearts on the line, “New Girl” becomes the benefactor of my holiday spirit. I’m spreading the love for this contender to the crown of best episode yet with a A-.

L.O.L.Ls: Laugh Out Loud Lines

- “I don’t go out on Valentine’s Day…it’s like a Dominican teenager playing Little League, it’s not fair for everybody else.”

- Cliff to Nick, on his hot boss and Nick’s girlfriend, Julia: “I would take that to Pound Town, make her visit the boneyard”

- “We’re actually gonna meet up later. He says he has a surprise for me.” “Spoiler: it’s his penis.”

- Schmidt’s desert island books: Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, Machiavelli’s The Prince, Freak by John Leguizamo, any script from season 1 of “Vampire Diaries” and The Phantom Tollbooth.

- “I’m here with two other girls drinking cranberry juice talking about Michelle Obama’s upper body workout.”

- “It’s a horrible neighborhood. There are youths everywhere.” Schmidt’s pronunciation of “youth” is priceless.

- Cece’s boyfriend tripping on a tire swing at the park: “I love brown people!” Cece’s curt response: “That’s racist, Kyle.”

- After dropping out of law school and getting heartbroken Nick reacted as such: played guitar in a ska band, gambled a lot, spent a weird week in a blonde wig demanding to be called Sandy Ferguson, and traveled to Mexico to enter into a cockfight…as a human

- Cliff on his plans now that he has quit his job as intern: “I’m gonna drive till I see the sun. And for once I’m gonna spend time with my birds. Boom.” Boom indeed, Cliff. Boom indeed.

Thanks to the Gallo Family Vineyard, a romantic Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to break the bank. Some inexpensive–but good!–wine and homemade dessert can make your evening sweet and sensible. The Moscato, a light-bodied wine with flavors of peach, honey and citrus, and Sweet Red, a light to-medium-bodied wine with flavors of apple, pear and tropical fruit, are just $5 a bottle, and pair perfectly with the below Gallo Family Vineyard’s signature recipes.

Fresh Pear Torta

For pears:

1 tablespoon unsalted butter, plus more for the cake pan

5 to 6 ripe but firm pears, such as Bartlett or Anjou, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

For cake:

2/3 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

2 large eggs, plus 1 large egg yolk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon freshly grated lemon zest

Confectioners’ sugar for dusting

Preheat oven to 375° F. Butter a 9-inch round cake pan and set aside. For pears, melt butter in a large skillet and saute the pears until just softened, about 6 minutes. Set aside. For cake, sift flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar into a large bowl. In a small bowl, whisk together melted butter, eggs, egg yolk, vanilla and lemon zest. With a wooden spoon, stir melted butter mixture into dry ingredients and blend until smooth. With a rubber spatula, fold in sauteed pears and their juices. Spoon the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until top is browned and a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in pan, then invert onto wire rack, and invert again onto a cake plate so that the top faces up. Dust with confectioners’ sugar, if desired.

Yield: 8 servings Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 35 minutes

An ode to the Mother of the American Valentine

It’s ironic and perhaps heartbreaking that the woman who helped create an industry based on love and romance never seemed to experience those things in her own life.

It was said that Miss Esther Howland, dubbed the “Mother of the American Valentine,” lived vicariously through her card empire. To this day, she is often credited as the brain child behind the production of the first elaborate, European-style, hand-assembled valentines in America.

Today’s multi-billion-dollar greeting card industry is indebted to her foresight and talent.
I had never heard about Esther Howland until recently, but her story – which I stumbled upon while surfing the internet – intrigued me and captured my imagination.

Esther was born in 1828 and grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1847, she graduated from Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (now Mount Holyoke College). She was 19. Under the tutelage of Mary Lyon, the school’s progressive founder, Esther excelled in her studies, perhaps determined to follow the advice of her teacher who told her students to “go where no one else will go, do what no one else will do.”

After graduation, Esther received an elaborate English valentine from one of her father’s business associates. Was it a declaration of his love for her? No one knows for sure. And although Esther was said to be impressed by the card, she was certain she could do better.

As the story goes, Esther convinced her father, Southworth Allen Howland, owner of a successful bookstore and stationery shop, based in Worcester, to order lace paper and other supplies from England and New York City. From these materials, she made a dozen valentine samples, which her brother, a traveling salesman for the family store, added to his book and stationery catalog for his next sales trip.

Esther was stunned when her brother returned home with more than $5,000 (the equivalent of about $150,000 in 2012) in advance sales. Bolstered by this demand, she laid out plans for production, organizing an all-female assembly line. And like that, Esther’s valentine venture, which produced beautiful cards at a wide range of prices, was born. Advertising and word-of-mouth led to a $100,000 per year business (the equivalent of millions today).

Esther’s entrepreneurial vision was considered revolutionary, not only from a feminist standpoint (at that time few women started businesses) but also from the perspective of the American valentine industry – one that had been sorely lacking in grace, elegance, and beauty.

Although much was written about Esther’s impressive business successes, other aspects of her existence were a bit hazier.

Unfortunately, my internet sleuthing left me empty-handed when it came to some of the more intimate details of Esther’s life. My imagination getting the better of me, I began to creatively fill in the blanks. What was Esther like in her personal life? How did she really feel about love and romance? Did she have many suitors? Why did she never marry? Were the lines on the inside of her cards, such as the following, inspired by a real-life romance?

Love/or Love Deal’ youth

I do accept your heart,

And value much the prize

For tho’you ne’er did tell your love,

I read it in your eyes.

Or was Esther simply more interested in the romance of business than in the business of romance? Did she ultimately sacrifice one for the other? Without knowing the real specifics of her life, other than the fact that she was confined to a wheelchair at 38 and died single and unmarried at 76, I was left to imagine the answers to these particular questions.

I envisioned a rich but lonely woman staring out a window as she formulated the poetic words to be written inside her elaborate lace creations, words that she would never fully be able to comprehend. Maybe the closest thing to Eros in her life was the fantastical world of other people’s romances. Maybe she was content surrounding herself with the idea of love and was too busy running a valentine card empire to make room for a little romance of her own. Maybe Esther made the choice of career over love. Would she have been able to succeed in her business if she had chosen to also get married, raise children, and take care of a home?

As I continued to reflect on what I knew of Esther’s life and what I imagined it to be, it dawned on me that her legacy was truly what mattered. Because of Esther and, certainly, women like her, who proved to many that a female could successfully forge paths outside of hearth and home, it became possible for future generations of women to do the same. Esther’s ambition enabled today’s woman to have more choices in life, to realize her potential, to choose her own destiny.

If Esther consciously and purposefully made this sacrifice, it turns out it was more than just a personal one; it was a sacrifice for female posterity, a sacrifice that ultimately helped other women gain the ability to, in the words of her old Mount Holyoke teacher, “go where no one else will go, do what no one else will do.”

For your sacrifice, Esther, this is my valentine to you.

Head down to the Old State House (206 Washington Street in downtown Boston) with your history buff friends for an after-hours demonstration of 18th century chocolate making. Enjoy sampling the aforementioned historically accurate candies, because calories consumed for educational purposes don’t count towards that New Year’s Resolution you made. Ingest some interesting tidbits about Boston’s chocolate history while being guided on a candlelit tour of the tower, and see items from the collection rarely displayed in the museum. Friday, Feb. 17; 6 p.m. Tickets $7.50.

Mortified’s Doomed Valentine’s Day Show

Remember the painfully embarrassing puppy-love-and-war things you used to angstily scribble about in that Lisa Frank journal you were convinced was as secure as Fort Knox, but really your entire family knew about the push-button release? Don’t miss this special love themed event at the Coolidge (290 Harvard St., Brookline), featuring regular men and women “sharing their most hilariously embarrassing diary entries, lyrics, poems, and artwork from their teenage years…from unrequited high-school crushes and tumultuous off-and-on romances to bad prom dates and awkward sexual firsts.” You might be single, but you’ll be thankful you don’t have to live through that again! Monday, Feb. 13, 7:30 p.m. Tickets $15 in advance, $18 at the door, students with valid ID $12.

You'll love hating this

Okay . . . I’m the person every woman loves to hate. I’m the Mistress.

Most women don’t want to think about me. They want men to realize their inevitable part in the scheme of things. That is, to honor their role in the relations between the sexes: after a look around among the women available, choose one, put a ring on her finger, and get on with basic plan. Don’t cheat.

As the alternative to this basic plan, or perhaps as an addendum to it, I don’t mind telling you my secrets for romance, in spite of the fact that I’ve rarely been the mistress of married men. Because I have been privy to the confidential confessions of what women have done to men – both as wives and girlfriends – to drive them either to boredom, or completely away, I will write an anatomy of the problem and the solution to a true romantic interlude.

Here is the wild ride of confidential abuse I have been privy to: “She used to pop pimples on my back when we were making love,” “If we had a party, she would show up thirty minutes late (also a time line for nights out) and I would have to entertain or wait,” “I only got a blow job three times in our marriage – and the last time was the night before I was served with our divorce papers,” or, my favorite, “Sex was so Goddamn boring – I just couldn’t crack the code . . .”

This may sound outrageously simplistic. I am just a mistress after all. The reason men love me? I will tell you. Before I go to meet any one of my lovers, I have one thought in my mind: Please let me please him.

Here is the Valentine’s Day formula — and it may not be as simple as it seems. As a mistress, I have always spent serious time thinking about my lover and all the things that really make him happy as the man I know him to be. So can you.

You know the man you’re about to have Valentine’s Day with. Forget the suggestions from magazines and popular self help manuals. Why should you take their advice? You have the inside line to what makes your lover happy. Remember the time he irritated you by being distracted by that football game while you were skimpily clad in a come-and-get-me outfit ready for romance? Guess what? Football turns him on.

Let me backtrack a moment and redefine what Valentine’s Day means to me. It is an opportunity to unselfishly give pleasure to the man in my life who makes me happy. I never think twice about whether it will be worth my while because of two things: I love to see the look on his face when I have guessed that thing he will love correctly. And, just as importantly, when he wants to pay me back, I know exactly what he can do to make me happy. I am a realist – I don’t expect a titan of industry to guess that I would love a trip to Paris. A pair of earrings is fine. I don’t expect a poet to buy me a pair of Manolo Blahniks. Poets are good for written tributes I will have in my scrap-book forever. I also don’t expect to be recompensed for the effort I put into Valentine’s Day (which they may have forgotten – or may have to postpone for a day, because they are one of a number of my men) to be repaid on the spot. I am always confident that “what goes around, comes around.”

Between the sheets, there is one rule of thumb: a man is never really happy unless he feels that when he has made love to a woman, he has made her happy. Forget this at your peril. On Valentine’s night do whatever you must to ensure that you, too, are going to enjoy the touch of the man you’ve chosen. Don’t let him get too drunk. Don’t forget to let him know that he’s better than anyone else at doing those little things he does to turn you on. Praise inspires — and men have been created to please us. Just reinforce the plan!

Ladies, what I’m saying is this: If he’s worth it, let Valentine’s Day be an opportunity to love him for who he is. Gear your conversation to the things that interest him. Give yourself over to those sexual pleasures that tantalize his taste as much as your own – after all, it’s only one night! If you love him, wouldn’t you want to spoil him once a year? Don’t worry about getting good value out of the effort you put into what you give. You’ll get it – I guarantee.

I assume I am writing to women who are selfish enough to want good value from every relationship they put their time into. I also assume that when you women go out to find men worthy of your time, you know what you want and go after it romantically with a “no holds barred” attitude

. . . and isn’t that what men love about you?

Happy Valentines Day!

These anti-aphrodisiacs could kill your sex drive, and that's no fun!

Stumbling upon a slew of articles divulging the latest list of aphrodisiacal foods around Valentine’s Day is no big surprise. Lists range from foods containing ingredients that are thought to work within our bodies to induce a sexual reaction to foods that can simply arouse the five senses. All of the talk about aphrodisiacs that surfaces with a vengeance during this time of year illuminates a most obvious fact of life: human beings hunger to know more about anything and everything that might possibly feed their sexual fires. But what about those foods that do just the opposite? Although not scientifically proven, it won’t hurt to avoid at all costs the evil, sexual desire-killing twin of the aphrodisiac on Valentine’s Day: the anti-aphrodisiac.

(Media Credit/Julius Schorzman via Wikimedia Commons)

Caffeinated Beverages. According to Caring Medical & Rehabilitation Services, drinking too many caffeinated beverages, such as soda and coffee, can lower your sex drive by causing adrenal fatigue. If your adrenal gland does not produce enough hormones, you can suffer from both decreased desire for sex and inadequate energy to perform.

Cilantro. Asian monks eat cilantro in order to control their sex drives, claims Sam Greenspan of 11Points.com in “11 Foods That Just Might Kill Your Sex Drive.” But in the Middle Ages, people believed that cilantro held the power to boost the sex drive, and thus used it as a main ingredient in their love potions. So is cilantro an aphrodisiac or an anti-aphrodisiac? You decide.

Corn Flakes. John Harvey Kellogg, the creator of Corn Flakes, believed that sex and masturbation were at the root of most health problems, Greenspan says. Kellogg whipped up the originally sugarless cereal under the impression that a bland breakfast could curb sexual urges throughout the day.

Gin & Tonic. While tonic’s main ingredient, quinine, has been associated with lowering testosterone levels, according to Dr. Matthew Karlovsky in his EmpowHER.com post “Can Certain Foods Kill Your Sex Drive?”, it is well known that alcohol of any variety has been linked to hindered sexual performance if consumed in excess. Gordon Attard of PimpThatFood.com suggests that because alcohol “inhibits inhibition itself,” perhaps this one should be counted as neutral.

Graham Crackers. Greenspan says that like Corn Flakes, Graham Crackers were the creation of a man who despised the uncontrollable sex drives of his contemporaries. Reverend Sylvester Graham, a Presbyterian minister in 1820s New Jersey, believed that a meat-rich diet lead to sexual promiscuity. In creating this bland cracker, Graham had hoped to suppress the sex drives of those around him.

Granola. James Caleb Jackson created the first batch of this crunchy cereal in the 1860s and called it “granula,” says Greenspan. Soon after, Kellogg stole the recipe and began selling it as his own. After being sued, Kellogg started to market his product as “granola.” (I think we know who came out on top in this battle). Like Kellogg’s Corn Flakes and Graham’s Graham Crackers, Jackson created this cereal in order to curb sex drives with the power of bland, tasteless food.

Energy Drinks. Like caffeinated beverages, energy drinks provide consumers with a forceful boost of energy followed by an even greater crash. David Zinczenko, editor-in-chief of “Men’s Health” and co-author of national bestseller “Eat This, Not That!” says in his article “Best and Worst Foods for Your Libido” that high sugar diets (and energy drinks contain a lot of sugar) can lead to temporarily lowered testosterone, and consequently a temporarily lowered sex drive.

(Media Credit/Tammy Green via Flickr)

Soy. According to Dr. Karlovsky, the phytoestrogens found in soy can disrupt the ratio of testosterone and estrogen, and testosterone is the driving force behind the libido for both sexes.

Mints. Although most look to mint-flavored candies and gum as secret weapons for freshening breath, eating too many mints could actually be bad for your libido, according to a study conducted by Suleyman Demirel University Medical School in Turkey, which found decreased levels of testosterone in rats that had consumed peppermint tea.

Fast Food. Just as plaque build-up from unhealthy fats, such as saturated and hydrogenated fats, found in fast food and fried food can lead to cardiovascular problems, it can also build up in the vessels of the penis, decreasing blood circulation and making getting an erection difficult despite how much you might want to get it on, according to Caring Medical & Rehabilitation Services.

(Media Credit/Heavybluesman via Wikimedia Commons)

Tomatoes. While tomatoes do indeed have their nutritional perks, Zinczenko suggests that the lycopene and phytofluene in these fruits can also decrease testosterone levels, and thus hinder one’s sex drive.

White Chocolate. While white chocolate isn’t exactly an anti-aphrodisiac per se, it’s interesting to note the difference between the aphrodisiacal quality of dark chocolate and the total lack thereof when it comes to white. According to Zinczenko, the heightened skin sensitivity and increase in serotonin that can result from eating dark chocolate doesn’t occur at all from consuming white chocolate. This is because white chocolate doesn’t actually contain any cocoa, the main ingredient in dark chocolate that produces those feel-good sensations.

You don't need reservations for this delicious meal

Going out for a romantic meal is always a treat; it’s something out of the ordinary, a perfect excuse to slip on a little black dress, order a couple of fancy cocktails, devour scrumptious course after course and top it all off with a decadently rich dessert. But while we can all appreciate the pleasure that accompanies a wonderful meal out on the town, there’s something particularly special and possibly even more romantic about a meal that’s prepared with love and tenderness in the comfort of your own home. What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with a romantic dinner at home? The ultimate statement of affection, if done right, a romantic dinner at home can also be something quite out of the ordinary, perhaps a brand new reason to put on that little black dress and indulge.

When selecting the perfect menu for this romantic meal, it’s important to keep in mind that the whole point of a Valentine’s dinner at home is to be comfortable, to relax and to fully enjoy the meal you have prepared and the company of the person you love. Slaving over the stove the entire night or worrying that the chocolate soufflé you have baking in the oven might fall should you set your wine glass down too hard pretty much drains all romance out of the equation. So rather than attempting to whip up the most intricate recipe or the most delicate of desserts, choosing a main course that is at once delectable and stress-free, a dessert that is sweet and simple, and a bubbly cocktail to wash it all down is definitely the way to go.

Delicious bowls of Beef Bourguignon (Media Credit/roland via Flickr)

My guide to a romantic Valentine’s dinner at home starts with the perfect main dish: Beef Bourguignon. Hearty and soul satisfying, this wine-rich beef stew is loaded with earthy mushrooms, smoky bacon and sweet pearl onions. I have two favorite recipes for this classic French dish: one is the ever-so-famous Boeuf a la Bourguignonne from Julia Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking,” and the other comes from Food Network star Ina Garten’s “Barefoot in Paris.” Whether you follow one of these recipes strictly or pull elements from the two, it’s pretty much impossible to mess this one up.

The ingredient list includes diced bacon, cubes of beef, mushrooms, carrots, onions, garlic, red wine, tomato paste, beef broth and, of course, butter. The essential preparation involves rendering the bacon, sautéing the vegetables in the fat, adding the beef, stock, and flavorings, and letting everything marry together in the pot. Each recipe has its own nuances, but the end result is the same: a thick, rich, meaty French stew that is as easy to make as it is to devour. Best of all, it tastes even better the day after it’s been prepared. Simply pull this masterpiece together the day before Valentine’s Day, allowing it to simmer for about one to three hours on the stove or in the oven so that all of the flavors can meld together and the beef can become perfectly tender. On Valentine’s Day night, heat it on the stove for about 30 minutes before serving it. While the stew bubbles way on the stove, sit back and relax. Served with a thick slice of sourdough toast rubbed with garlic, or some buttered noodles to soak up the beautiful sauce, Beef Bourguignon is the ultimate Valentine’s treat.

To wash down this decadent meal, a light and bubbly cocktail is the perfect complement. Champagne or Prosecco mixed with elderflower liqueur, a splash of tangy grapefruit juice and a sprig of mint is an elegant drink that does not compete with the flavors in the dish. These other romantic cocktail ideas, courtesy of Turning Leaf, are easy to make and are fun alternatives to the typical glass of wine.

Turning Leaf Ruby Red Spritzer

Ruby Red Spritzer

2 slices ruby red grapefruit
1 ounce pineapple juice
3 ounces ginger ale
3 ounces Turning Leaf Chardonnay

Combine grapefruit, pineapple juice and chardonnay in a pint glass with ice. Cover and shake well. Pour into desired glass and top off with ginger ale.

Romantic Red Sangria

1 pint cherries
1 pint raspberries
1 pint strawberries
Bottle of Turning Leaf Merlot
1 liter of black cherry soda

Place cherries, raspberries and strawberries in a large pitcher. Pour in merlot and let stand at room temperature for about one hour. Add black cherry soda. Serve over ice.

Turning Leaf Romantic Red Sangria

For dessert, I recommend something on the lighter side to round out this rather rich main dish. I always enjoy a bowl of frozen yogurt, Greek yogurt, or vanilla ice cream served with roasted fruit. You can use halved stone fruits such as peaches and plums drizzled with honey and cinnamon, or chunks of pineapple sprinkled with brown sugar and cracked black pepper. Place the fruit in a baking dish (cut-side up for the stone fruit) and pop into the oven at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes or until the fruit is soft, bubbly and caramelized. The fruit can be placed in the oven right before serving the main course, and will be hot and ready to eat as soon as the stew has been devoured. Spooned over a cold scoop of ice cream or yogurt, this fruity dessert is a refreshing end to a hearty meal.

Preparing a romantic Valentine’s dinner at home like the one I’ve just described is almost as easy as making a reservation at a fancy restaurant, not to mention a whole lot less expensive. So rather than bundling up and braving the cold weather only to share a meal with 50 other couples who are sitting on top of you, why not try something new for a change? Show your special someone how much you care by preparing a homemade feast, and indulging in a relaxing, love-filled evening right in your very own home.

(Media Credit/Nicole Chan)

Stores have been jamming Valentine’s Day down our throats for at least a month now. There’s no other holiday in existence that can make so many otherwise intelligent, independent women feel so bad about themselves just because they don’t have a significant other. It doesn’t help that as we get older, more and more of our friends start to settle down. Valentine’s Day can take a real shot at your self-worth if you let it, dictating that someone should want to be with you every Feb. 14.

We all know it just doesn’t work that way. At some point, and in my case repeatedly, you’re going to be single on Valentine’s Day — and that’s okay!

Being single does not make you unloved: Your family and friends love you. I hear your objection of, “That’s not the point!” But love is love, and why shouldn’t it be celebrated in whatever form it comes in? We all remember that moment on the ultimate single gal’s show, “Sex and the City,” when Mr. Big tells Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha, “You three know (Carrie) better than anyone. You’re the loves of her life and a guy’s just lucky to come in fourth.” Having awesome friends is just as important as having a kick-ass significant other. So instead of throwing yourself a pity party, I suggest you gather your single girlfriends and throw a girls’ night bash free from the overcrowded restaurants with clichéd pre fixe menus and so much red and pink it looks like Cupid threw up in there.

Here’s what you’ll need.

What would a girls’ night be without a few cocktails? Cheers to the friends who love you no matter what!

Love Potion #9

1 ounce strawberry, vanilla or clear vodka
1/2 ounce white crème de cacao
1/2 cup fresh or frozen strawberries
1 scoop of vanilla ice cream
1/2 cup ice
1 strawberry for garnish

Pour the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a chilled margarita glass. Garnish with a strawberry.

Chocolate covered strawberries. They’re sexy and sweet, and there’s always an excuse for chocolate. Making them together is a great group activity, and you know all the attached girls will be missing out when their guys present them with generic boxes of cheap chocolates. Gather a smorgasbord of toppings for extra flair. I like sprinkles, crushed Andes mints, crushed nuts and shredded coconut.

6 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped, or semisweet chocolate chips
1 pound large ripe strawberries (about 20)

Wash strawberries, leaving stems on, and pat dry thoroughly with paper towels. Set aside at room temperature. In microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate in microwave on either defrost setting or 10 percent power for one minute. Stir. Continue microwaving at 10 to 20 second intervals, stirring after each time, until chocolate is melted. Line a baking sheet with wax paper. While holding the stem, dip each strawberry in chocolate one at a time, twirling as you remove each strawberry. Sprinkle on desired topping(s). Place strawberries on baking sheet. When all strawberries have been dipped, place baking sheet in refrigerator for 15 minutes or keep at room temperature for 30 minutes, until chocolate is set. Serve strawberries the same day they are dipped.

For white chocolate drizzle (optional), melt 3 ounces chopped white chocolate and use a fork to drizzle it over the dipped strawberries.

A great chick flick. Take advantage of a night with the ladies and watch all of your favorite tearjerkers, such as “Dirty Dancing,” “Beaches,” “Ghost” and “The Notebook.” A marathon of “Sex and the City” on DVD is another great choice.

A jewelry and/or clothing swap. You might not have a man, but a girl can never have too many clothes and accessories. Have your friends bring unwanted items of clothing and/or jewelry and set up a swap. Use this as an opportunity to rid your closet of clothes you just don’t wear, and add cute new items to your wardrobe — for free!

In today’s world, there are plenty of great reasons to be single by choice; maybe you don’t ever want to be married, maybe you’re simply not looking, maybe you want to focus on your career and on being independent, or maybe you just haven’t found the right person yet. Whatever the reason, instead of moping that you haven’t found The One for you, you should be thanking your lucky stars you didn’t settle and end up with the wrong person. For every great guy out there, there’s at least one terrible guy who hasn’t grown up yet and maybe never will. People are putting off settling down for longer than ever before, according to “USA Today,” to go to school, to travel and to just enjoy being young. In a world where we are often overwhelmed or paralyzed by choice, we can at least be proud that we are choosing to embrace our single selves. So to the still-single ladies of 2011, let’s take it easy on ourselves this year. It’s a jungle out there.

For years, lovers have given generic and boring gifts to their significant others on Valentine’s Day. Collections of drugstore chocolates, cheap perfumes and colognes and crappy “romantic” candles that are said to set the mood have become a rut that gift givers turn to.

In the spirit of the new year, we at Blast suggest that a new standard be set for Valentine’s Day gifts. Boston establishments such as Beacon Hill Chocolates, Condom World, Sweet & Nasty and LUSH Cosmetics raise the bar for Valentine’s Day with their unique, fun gifts that put a spin on traditional choices.

Beacon Hill Chocolates

91 Charles St.
www.beaconhillchocolates.com

Forget that heart-shaped box of cheap chocolates! On the brick streets of Beacon Hill lies aptly named Beacon Hill Chocolates, a gourmet chocolate store that prides itself in its unique keepsake gift boxes and artisan chocolates.

The company, which will be celebrating its fifth birthday this April, imports rich chocolates from chocolatiers in Belgium, France and a local business in Natick, Mass., called Cocoa Pod.

Rebecca Novak, the manager of the store, said that the big seller for Valentine’s Day this year will be the handcrafted keepsake boxes. Chocolates for Valentine’s Day may not be original, but with these decorative decoupage-style boxes designed with vintage postcards, lithographs, illustrations and photographs, customers can mix and match any type of chocolate truffles they want.

“It’s personalized,” Novak said. “You can’t find the boxes anywhere else.”

Out of the hundreds of artfully crafted truffles and painted hearts, Novak personally recommends the heart-shaped Cognac Caramels or the Brownie Bite Truffles. Other special items to look out for include the Caramel Sushi, Salted Caramel Fudge and the over-sized Chocolate Conversation Hearts.

It’s advisable to place custom orders a week prior to Valentine’s Day, especially for the fresh chocolate-covered strawberries that will be available this year.

Condom World

332 Newbury St.
617-267-7233
www.condomworldboston.com

Upon entering Condom World, the popular X-rated store on Newbury Street, the first thing that stands out is a swaying clock designed to look like two cows “doing the nasty.”

Mike Morrison, the store’s manager, thinks that couple-related products will be the best sellers this year for Valentine’s Day.

“Love is in the air and we’re a sex shop,” Morrison said.

Rather than look at items that are separate for men and women, Morrison motions towards products that couples can use together. Items such as vibrating rings, edible body lotion and lube, dirty dice, books of “coupons” that merit sexy activities such as “one hot bath together,” and body paint pens allow for shared Valentine’s Day gifts.

Various other items around the store include Kama Sutra books, naughty costumes and masturbation items for those who are celebrating the holiday alone.

The wall-length stretch of vibrators and dildos may be intimidating at first glance, but the fun, hands-on nature of Condom World gifts goes unmatched for Valentine’s Day.

Sweet & Nasty

90 Massachusetts Ave., # 90A
617-266-7171
www.sweet-n-nasty.com

Looking for a sweet treat besides the usual box of chocolates? Take the train to Hynes Convention Center and buy a couple of chocolate penis pops from Sweet & Nasty erotic bakery.

Niki Novak, the owner of Sweet & Nasty, dove into the erotic bakery business in October of 1981 and has been going strong for 30 years.

When visiting her sister in New York, Novak had her first penis cake experience and it was about as appetizing as corrugated cardboard. This served as a springboard for Novak to open her own erotic bakery with naughty goods that tasted great.

All the big sellers for Valentine’s Day are edible, such as G-strings, booby tassels, handcuffs and anatomically correct body parts.

“It combines chocolate, sex and love,” Novak said, describing the essence of her work.

The light-hearted humor behind the Valentine’s Day gifts from Sweet & Nasty replaces the typical serious romance theme of the holiday. Lovers may not wish to propose to their significant others with a chocolate mold of two pigs “making bacon,” but it’s items like these that show that some thought was put into the gifts.

Novak says it’s typical to hear customers say, “This would be perfect for so and so” or, “Oh my God, this is so gross.” She explained that the most disgusted customers end up making the final purchases.

Anyone who wants some Buxom Bettys or Bite-Sized Tit Pops should place orders sooner than later. Two to three days prior to Valentine’s Day at Sweet & Nasty can only be described as a mob scene.

LUSH Cosmetics

166 Newbury St.
617-375-5874
www.lushusa.com/shop

Perfume and cologne are one of the many generic “go-to” gifts for Valentine’s Day. If anyone is considering the gift of scent, the one store on Newbury Street that you can smell from a block away is calling out to lovers this year.

LUSH Cosmetics is the candy land of homemade bath bombs, soaps and all that smells wonderful.

Sarah Hewitt, the manager of the Newbury Street location, says that one of the best sellers for Valentine’s Day is the Sex Bomb bath bombs.

“Sex Bomb is the ultimate sensual bath bomb,” Hewitt said.

Items such as Sex Bomb and the limited edition Valentine’s Day products are better than ordinary perfumes because they are made of natural aphrodisiacs that set the mood for the holiday.

Some of the limited edition bubble bars, bath bombs and soaps that are sure to sell out quickly are Magic Mushroom, The Ex Factor, Frog Prince and Love Birds.

Gifts from LUSH can range anywhere from $4 to $200.

Popular scents that Hewitt recommends are vanilla, chocolate, rose and jasmine. These scents can be found in many of the massage bars, and not only do they smell good, but they lend themselves to romantic back rubs.

LUSH’s soaps and unique fragrances can replace the cheap cologne gift as well with scents like Demon in the Dark, Ice Blue, Sea Vegetable and Karma. The masculine scents smell lovely without being too overpowering.

If you find yourself single and sad, grab a Blackberry bath bomb and spend the holiday smelling bergamot, a natural anti-depressant.

And the slowest day for breakups? It'll be here soon

It’s almost the time of year for snuggling by the fire and kissing under the mistletoe, but don’t get too warm and cozy just yet — you could be in for some holiday heartbreak.

According to British journalist David McCandless, two weeks before Christmas is a peak time of year for couples to break up. He knows this because he has analyzed over 10,000 Facebook status updates in an effort to discover the days of the year when you’re most likely to be watching chick flicks and stuffing your face with pints of ice cream.

In a video from last July’s TED conference in Oxford, England, McCandless explains that after searching Facebook status updates for the terms “breakup” and “broken up,” he and his colleague Lee Byron created a graph of how frequently the terms were used on different days of the year. The graph shows clear spikes in breakup activity, suggesting that these findings may hold true to relationship trends outside of online status updates. According to the data, couples split most frequently during these times of the year:

Just after Valentine’s Day. Breaking up with someone right before or on the day dedicated to love would reserve you a special place in hell.

Right before Spring Break. You don’t want to have to be the “attached” buzz-kill in Cancun.

Two weeks before Christmas. Because breaking up with someone on Christmas Day is just cruel. And face it, you don’t want to have to buy your soon-to-be-ex presents because, well, they’ll soon be your ex. And the idea of meeting “the family” makes you gag.

Other times of the year with notable spikes of heartbreak are April Fools’ Day (the joke really is on you) and during summer break (your ex is so last school year). Mondays are the most popular break up day of the week, because, really, what’s one more reason to hate them?

But, relax, if your relationship is intact on Christmas Day, you’re in the clear for at least 24 hours — it’s the slowest break-up day of the year.

Cramped restaurant? No thanks.

Tiny cramped restaurants in the North End that empty your wallet and quickly push you out of the door, because it is Valentine’s Day and there are countless couples who will use that very same romantic enclave before the night is done, are completely overrated. If it is that ever so romantic “Lady and the Tramp” locking lips over a bowl of spaghetti experience you are looking for, look no further than your own kitchen.

Valentine’s Day is Sunday, so there really is no reason not to create your own romantic dinner minus the cramped tables and exorbitant prices. Luckily for all of you non-cooks out there this three course Italian-esque feast practically cooks itself.

Grocery List

Romaine lettuce

Croutons

Caesar Salad dressing

1 pound ground beef — meatloaf mix, with pork and beef, is also a tasty option.

1 egg

1/4 cup of Italian breadcrumbs

Parmesan cheese — I use the kind that comes in a plastic container in the grocery store, but if you want to be extra fancy, buy a small block of it.

Milk — just a splash

Salt and Pepper

One box of spaghetti

Jar of spaghetti sauce — Try any sauce that looks tasty, and I’ll tell you how to fancy it up.

1 cup of chocolate chips

1 cup of heavy cream

Strawberries

Optional: bacon, garlic, fresh basil, fresh parsley, onion, Ancho Chili powder, Cayenne

All of the optional ingredients are based on personal taste. I am not a fan of onion in my ground beef, but if the love of your life is also a lover of onions, then it might be the perfect addition.

For the meatballs: Place your ground beef, one egg, a splash of milk, 1/4 cup of bread crumbs, a few shakes of parmesan cheese, and a little bit of salt and pepper into a bowl. If you’re a fan of bacon, dice some raw bacon and throw it in the mix. You could also add some saut©ed garlic or fresh parsley. I am a purist when it comes to food, so I tend to keep my meals simple. But the bacon does make the meatballs rather tasty.

Mix it all up with your hands, or a spoon, if you feel so inclined to be neat. Form the meat into balls. I like to make mine a little smaller than golf balls. Size does not matter, when it comes to making meatballs. The smaller balls will cook faster. Bake the meatballs on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes, turn them and bake until they are completely cooked.

For the pasta: Start a pot of water for the noodles. When it comes to a boil, pour about half of the box into the water, and turn the stove down a little so it doesn’t boil over. Cook the pasta until it is done. I am not a fan of al dente pasta, but there is nothing worse than overdone squishy pasta. Don’t forget about the pasta, and drain when it is finished

For the salad: Cut the head of romaine in half and half again. Start at the top of the lettuce and chop at about half inch increments for the perfect bite size pieces of lettuce. Add the croutons and maybe some Parmesan cheese. Dress with Caesar dressing or serve with the dressing on the side.

For the Dessert: Pour the heavy cream into a pot. If you are feeling a little bold add a pinch or too of Ancho Chili powder or cayenne powder. This adds a little bit of a kick to the chocolate and cuts the sweetness. Chili powder is also rumored to be an aphrodisiac. Pour one cup of chocolate chips into a bowl that will be big enough to hold the cup of heavy cream as well. Bring the heavy cream to a boil. Pour over the chocolate, and use a whisk to combine. Start at the center with slow steady strokes. As you begin to see the chocolate and cream coming together broaden your strokes till all of the cream and chocolate have come together to make a smooth delicious chocolate Ganache. Wash the strawberries and serve the Ganache warm with the strawberries on the side, ready to be dipped.

Putting it all together: Heat up the sauce. You can add fresh parsley, fresh basil, saut©ed garlic, or some diced onion to the sauce. Make it your own and taste it to see what it needs. Add the cooked meatballs to the sauce. Serve a nice big plate of spaghetti with the meatballs on top. It’s Valentine’s Day, so share a plate. And maybe, just maybe you’ll start eating the same noodle, meet in the middle of the table, and sneak an adorably Disney worthy kiss.

The ultimate date movie

3.5 out of 4 stars

The most dangerous thing about making a movie like "Valentine’s Day" is the cast. Ensembles are a tricky thing and that amount of star power in one film can prove disastrous if not handled properly (see: 2006′s "Bobby"). It can be done though, as proven by last year’s mega-hit "He’s Just Not That Into You". Luckily "Valentine’s Day", despite being filled to the brim with Hollywood A-listers, avoided egos and overcrowding. Everyone put forth a good performance, seemingly aware that they were a part of a bigger picture rather than trying to stand out for themselves. From the hysterically awkward (Topher Grace and Anne Hathaway, Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner) to the heartbreaking (Shirley Maclaine and Hector Elizondo, Jennifer Garner and Patrick Dempsey) "Valentine’s Day" wields its all-star cast impeccably. Garry Marshall, director of "Pretty Woman" and "The Princess Diaries" series executed exactly what the trailers have been calling "Valentine’s Day" — the perfect date movie.

The second second most dangerous thing is providing a feasible plot. Am I really to believe that all of these people end up with a happy ending just because Hallmark overpriced their chocolate that day? Does someone actually think that I am going to buy Jessica Biel and Jessica Alba being alone on such an occasion? While Biel does play the stereotypical single, bitter "I hate V-day with a burning passion" workaholic, all other skepticisms were canceled with an unexpected dose of realism (not to say that no clich©s or cheesy gestures occurred, it is a romantic comedy after all). It was nice to see that a movie marketed as the ultimate ode to love didn’t try to market the emotion itself as perfect. Hearts were broken and not purely to realize that there were better pairings, but to show that sometimes love actually sucks and it can’t always conquer all — sometimes it takes a little of your own effort as well.

Directed by: Gary Marshall
Starring:Basically all of Hollywood and Taylor Swift
Rated:PG-13

(spoilers ahead, so stop reading if spoilers get you all bent out of shape!)

Case in point: When 18-year-old Grace (Emma Roberts) decides to lose her virginity to her high school boyfriend on Valentine’s Day, she is expecting the act to create a magical, almost spiritual, connection between the two to keep them together when they separate for college. What ensues is possibly the most humorous scene in the entire film and more accurately reflects the most common real life experience — the first time is more awkward than magical 99.9 percent of the time and no amount of planning is going to alleviate that. It would have been easier, and certainly more romantic, to give the young sweethearts a flawless, clich© union, but instead Grace develops a more realistic insight about the situation, which if all teens possessed, we might not have season two of "16 and Pregnant".

Grace and her boyfriend are amongst a series of couples and singles in Los Angeles that "Valentine’s Day" follows on the most romantic day of the year, each intricately threaded to each other via plotted social or occupational relationships. That kind of threading is vital in films of this nature so to give the plot some continuity rather than being jerked around between unrelated vignettes.

Trailers have been advertising Julia Roberts as the flagship storyline of the movie, but actually she’s just the most famous name. Punk’d creator/heartthrob Ashton Kutcher is actually the central line of the movie, playing Reed Bennett, a heart-prominently-on-sleeve florist. Kutcher and the workers in his shop serve as the springboard for the rest of the romantic tales and woes of the film. Most notably of the woes is 7-year-old Edison who desperately needs to tell his mystery valentine he loves her with only thirteen dollars to his name. Edison just goes to show that love can’t survive without perseverance, and that little kid romances will never fail to be absolutely adorable and completely endearing. The incurable romantic outlook works well for Kutcher while giving him the tools to act as glue for the plot’s interweaving storylines.

"Valentine’s Day" is a story about love, in all forms, shapes and sizes. There’s laughter, moments to get choked up over, unexpected twists, good guys and bad guys. With a killer cast and a creative, well organized script, "Valentine’s Day" is set to become this year’s ultimate romantic comedy — and what would go better with your overpriced chocolate this weekend?

A little something for broke couples and poor single people

Ahhhh I’m seeing red. And roses. And lots of hearts.

Hallmark is at it’s happiest and the red ink on everyone’s printer is being drained.

So, I think there should be some tips for the broke-yet-happy couples in the world as well as the single folks out there who might need some helpful hints on how to enjoy a holiday that is basically designed solely for the happy couples of the world.

Here goes.

Broke yet happy couples

Make homemade chocolates. Easy enough. Sure, you have to buy the funny little plastic molds and the bags of chocolates. But they’re kind of fun to make. Who doesn’t like melting chocolates and actually having a reason to do it? You can get fancy and get different colored chocolates. Make all kinds of sappy, sentimental, sweet-toothed treats.

Go-to option #2: flowers. So freakin’ simple, yet so damn effective.

OK so I’m going to go a little out-of-the box on this one. I’m just going to put it out there. Feel free to throw it back if you aren’t feeling it. But listen. If you’re really broke and you can’t afford the candy or the flowers or the nice dinner out, then just skip all that and go for dessert. And by dessert I mean a can of whipped cream. I’m not going to tell you what to do with the whipped cream. I have faith that you will figure it out all on your own.

If you aren’t into that sort of thing, I kind of like the idea of funny gifts for this holiday. For me, it just seems hard to take the holiday so seriously when pictures of fat, semi-naked cupids are staring at me. And those stupid message hearts. Sugary goodness, yes. Easy to take seriously, no. Besides, real gifts are for birthdays, anniversaries, and that jolly holiday season that I love so much and seriously miss already. But then I think about spring coming and I’m happy again. Unlike all those unsmiling Bostonians out there…

OK, so this one came to me after a recent alumni weekend in which my girls and I stayed in a hotel for free because one of my roomie’s father’s gets free hotel rooms as part of his work benefits. Does someone you love get free hotel rooms? If yes, give them a call. A free hotel room is a free hotel room. And Valentine’s Day is all about being with each other, not how much money you spend while you’re together. Feel free to use that line when your girl/guy yells at you for being cheap.

All my single ladies (and men)

How to deal? Few methods.

There’s the buddy system. As in grab your closest single buddy and have a fun day together. There’s the strength in numbers plan if you have a solid group of single friends that you can get together with.

But, honestly, don’t feel like you even have to acknowledge the holiday. Treat it like another Arbor Day: a holiday that generally goes unnoticed until a week later when you look at the calendar.

This year the big day falls on a Sunday. You know what Sunday is in grad school language? Homework day! Yay! Blech. Gag me. No, but seriously. It’s good that it’s on a Sunday. Do your homework that’s due the next day that you’ve been putting off all week (crap, there goes the New Year’s resolution), hit the gym, do some grocery shopping. It’s a Sunday. Treat it as such.

Don’t want to ignore Big Red? Then don’t. Power to ya. Nothing wrong with finding yourself a date for the day or night. This is your chance to score a free meal, free candy, maybe even free flowers, all because it’s a holiday that you personally have nothing to do with.

So yeah, for those of you actually celebrating the holiday, Valentine’s Day definitely doesn’t have to be a break-the-bank kind of day. A good rule of thumb to follow: the cornier something is, the more sentimental it might turn out to be, and the cheaper it probably is.

And in case anyone is wondering, I enjoy chocolate with caramel and yellow tulips.

Want the world to be dark or light? The choice is yours. Vote inside.

Valentine’s Day is a day of division. You’re either in love or you aren’t. The latter saves you money and the former gets you laid.

How does this apply to gaming?

Atlus today revealed a Valentine’s Day in-game World Tendency Event. Much like the Halloween engagement, the world will either go dark or light. But this time around the choice is yours, because, and I’m quoting Atlus here, “Since V Day is somewhat divisive, in that some people feel bright and happy and others not so much, we’re going to leave which way we actually shift to you…”

Love, or not?

The choices are:

Atlus Loves Me (White World Tendency)

Atlus Loves Me Not (Black World Tendency)

Cast your vote today by following this link and if you’re in love, enjoy it. If you’re single, well, enjoy that too. Both have their ups and downs, ins and outs.

Follow these tips, and you might have a lucky V-Day

It’s here

The day that some swoon over and others loathe. Whether you’re in a relationship or flying solo, the day is as full of as many expectations and dilemmas as the local pharmacy is with aisles and aisles of cheap chocolates and cutesy heart-shaped trinkets. Here’s Blast’s take on how to handle some not-so-sweet Valentine’s Day situations.

If you or your significant other (S.O.) is sick…and not with the love bug

Take this opportunity to show how much you care. Snuggle up on separate chairs and enjoy a night in for a change. Make chicken soup and watch a movie. Extra points for giving a back rub! Are you the one that’s sick? Send this article to your S.O. and cross your finger that he or she takes the hint. Oh, and no sex tonight. Instead, choose a night you’ll both be free when that miserable cold or flu is likely to be gone. Plan a romantic dinner in and some extra time between the sheets — it’ll give you both something to look forward to.

If you’re so broke that the Dollar Store is your new Macy’s

In this economy, you’re not alone. The easiest solution is to get crafty: Make your sweetie a card and make his or her favorite dinner. Then uncork your favorite $6 bottle of vino and give your SO a full body massage. Use oil. and light candles to really get in the mood. Spending ridiculous amounts of money on awesome gifts like gorgeous jewelry or his favorite sold-out video game is lame, right? Right?!

If you and your S.O. just started dating, so this holiday could make it or break it

No pressure! This is a tricky holiday for new romances; if you overdo it, you look like a desperate psycho, but if you blow it off, your S.O. might question how seriously you are taking the relationship. Keep it sweet and simple. Guys, take her out to eat at her favorite place and don’t forget the flowers. Channel your feminine side and be romantic! Girls, bake him his favorite cookies or flavor of cupcakes. Don’t, we repeat don’t, get him anything cutesy, like a scrapbook of the three amazing weeks you’ve spent together unless you want week four to be the last.

If you promised another couple that you’d have a romantic double-date, but the thought of watching them feed each other and play footsie makes you and your S.O. want to hurl

The solution to getting some precious alone time on V-Day in this situation is simple: lie. Feign illness. Just mention the Swine Flu and they’ll practically beg you to ditch the plans! Plan on a date in the future so they don’t suspect a thing.

If you and your S.O. are in a fight

Big problem, or perfect timing? Two words: MAKE-UP SEX. Screw all the lovey-dovey crap and get down to the dirty business. Use chocolate, caramel and whipped cream in the bedroom. Do things that those so-sickeningly-cute-they-never-fight couples would blush about. By the end of the night, you two won’t even remember what you were fighting about.

If Cupid’s arrow completely missed you this year

If you’re brave enough to spend V-Day alone, the solution for lonely guys is pretty easy: porn, pizza and beer. Ladies, spend the day celebrating you — the hot, sexy, single you. Go shopping, go to the spa, or arrange a girls’ night with some other single gal pals. Make Cosmos and watch your favorite “breakup” episodes of Sex and the City, or a bunch of horror flicks – especially ones in which hard-bodied lovers die slow, horrible deaths.

See? Valentines Day can be a love-fest for everyone, no matter what your relationship status on Facebook says! Just get creative and remember: there’s always next year.

The fact that Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday this year bodes well for people of all relationship statuses. Couples can spend all day together, or devote a good time to solitary preening in preparation for a big date that night. Singles, if they choose, don’t even have to get out of bed and expose themselves to the romantic bliss around them, but can instead spend the entire day watching schmaltzy movies with Ben, Jerry and a bottle of wine, or browsing through Craigslist Missed Connections “" without even having to use up a sick day.

Even those who fall into the awkward I-don’t-know-if-we’ve-been-dating-long-enough-to-make-a-big-deal-out-of-Valentine’s-Day gray area can fall back on any number of “previous engagement” excuses should the need for nonchalance arise.

But for some, it doesn’t matter on which square of the calendar the dreaded V-Day falls. For those of you unlucky ones still nursing a wounded heart, there’s nothing like a depressing love song to remind you that we’ve all been there.

As our Valentine’s gift to you, we at Blast have selected — in a completely subjective and non-scientific process — a smattering of songs to play alongside that montage of the bliss-heartbreak trajectory that you can’t get out of your head. And we’ve handily broken them down into categories based on the five stages of grief (some are more popular than others)! So, whether you’re pining over the one that got away or cringing over the one that never should have gotten to you in the first place, crank up your iPod and sing it out. Lord knows you’ve got nothing better to do this Saturday!

Denial: The shell-shocked stage of still believing your ex will come waltzing back through the door, begging for your forgiveness on his or her knees. Other symptoms may include keeping framed pictures, clothes, toothbrushes, etc.

“Maybe Someday” The Cure
“Strange and Beautiful” Aqualung
“Always” Blink-182
“You Really Got A Hold On Me” Smokey Robinson (or Cyndi Lauper’s significantly more melancholy version if you’re looking for the fast track to Depression)
“Against All Odds” Phil Collins
“Unchained Melody” The Righteous Brothers
“Cannonball” Damien Rice
“Still Loving You” The Scorpions
“Say It Isn’t So” The Outfield
“With Or Without You” U2
“Another Perfect Day” American Hi-Fi

Anger: Hey, you know what all those pictures and clothes are great for? A bonfire! At this point, it doesn’t even matter if that (insert vulgar insult here) comes back, you wouldn’t give them the time of day.

“Take Another Little Piece Of My Heart” Janis Joplin
“My Happy Ending” Avril Lavigne
“Long Way to Happy” Pink
“Before He Cheats” Carrie Underwood

Bargaining: But maybe if they radically changed their political views and quit talking to their ex you would.

“Sell My Old Clothes, I’m Off To Heaven” Saves the Day (Ed. Note: Blast does not encourage its readers to gouge their eyes out in order to win back a lover’s affection. If there’s anything that’s worse than being single, it’s being blind, permanently disfigured AND single.)
“Cry” Faith Hill
“Again” Janet Jackson
“The Scientist” Coldplay
“I’m Alright” Stereophonics
“Sleep Better” Pete Yorn

Depression: Oh God it hurts. People go through breakups all the time, but no one has ever experienced the searing emotional pain that you are feeling right now. No. One. (Except all the people listed below)

“Nothing Compares 2 U” Sinead O’Conner (Hey, healing through music sometimes comes at the expense of dignity.)
“Hide and Seek” Imogen Heap
“I Can’t Be With You” The Cranberries
“Somebody” Depeche Mode
“One Year Six Months” Yellowcard
“Picture” Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow
“Breathe” Melissa Etheridge
“Sleep” Azure Ray
“Only Yesterday” Taken By Trees
“Back to Black” Amy Winehouse (If you’re stuck in a rut, just think “" at least you’re not Amy Winehouse.)
“For No One” The Beatles
“Dying” Hole
“Country Feedback” R.E.M.
“Over and Over Again” Nelly feat. Tim McGraw
“You Were Meant for Me” Jewel
“You Were Mine” Dixie Chicks
“Title and Registration” Death Cab for Cutie (Let’s face it, 90 percent of the songs in their catalog could fit into one or more of these categories. Take your pick.)
“Everything Reminds Me Of Her” Elliott Smith

Acceptance:‚ Basically these are all female empowerment anthems. Maybe guys never get to this stage?

“I Will Survive” Gloria Gaynor (or Cake’s rendition if there’s still a little lingering anger)
“Survivor” Destiny’s Child
“Since U Been Gone” Kelly Clarkson
“Landslide” Fleetwood Mac
“Call It Off” Tegan & Sara
“Not Big” Lily Allen
“Glycerine” Bush
“No More I Love Yous” Annie Lennox
“The First Cut is The Deepest” Sheryl Crow

Now it’s your turn, Blast readers! Which songs do you choose to be the soundtrack for your wallowing? Sound off below!

BROOKLINE — Like most restaurants that don’t feature dollar menus, The Fireplace is serving a special menu for Valentine’s Day. With the crisp crackling of a roaring fire in the background, their “aphrodisiac inspired” dishes include includes Lobster Bisque with Vanilla-Squash Dumplings and Oesetra Caviar ($21) and Pan Seared Venison with Red Currant Bourbon Sauce over Crispy Cornmeal Johnnycake, Honey Braised Cabbage & Golden Onion Rings ($37).

1634 Beacon St.
Green Line (C) Washington Square Station
617-975-1900
3.5 out of 4 stars

What no one should forget is that The Fireplace is romantic all year long. A recent visit — my first time here — was no exception. I hope.

The restaurant gives off melded feelings of youth and maturity. Boston Magazine recently awarded the restaurant for its brunch, but Fireplace’s reputation is as a dinner destination.

Despite the bounds of progress I’ve made in the last 10 years in adding food items to my personal repertoire, I’ve never tried mussels. That changed.

If you’ve never tried a mussel, it looks disgusting. But now’s not the time to look squeamish in front of a date. Prying this sliminess out of the familiar black shell, I plopped it in, chewed, and swallowed.

Yum. Yum? Yum.

Fireplace’s Cape Cod Mussels Steamed in a Lemon, Garlic & Toasted Almond Broth ($12) are delicious. Sadly, I can’t give you an official comparison to anything else yet. One of them did taste fishy, but the rest were buttery and neutral.

The Grilled Sirloin ($33) which could have been a little leaner but was cooked perfectly medium and very savory. The second dish is a bit of a mouthful to say in one breath: “Mustard Crusted Swordfish over Grilled Red Potatoes, Sautƒ©ed Leeks and Cherry Tomatoes w/Red Pepper-Bacon Vinaigrette & Crispy Onion Rings” ($28). It was a very mild fish, cooked just right.

Two things to check out are their cheese menu and their wine list. Dessert is $8, and though we were full, I’d be curious on a future visit to try the Apricot & Mulled Cider Crisp with Gingerbread Topping & Cinnamon Ice Cream. That just sounds amazing.

Atmosphere mixes with a rich menu and excellent service. We had a cozy corner table and everything.

Him.

For the special man in your life cologne and watches are always a nice gift, but trying something new is always more exciting. If your guy is a sports fan but tickets are expensive and hard to come by, try some television packages. Comcast offers an NFL Network, college sports packages, and just about every other sport you can think of -so your better half will never miss a game and be able to watch from the comfort of his own couch. Check your local listings for prices online, (packages cost about $100).

If your guy isn’t into sports, electronics have been on sale since the economy took a turn for the worst. Online and branch stores are offering great deals on DVDs, blu-ray disk players, digital cameras and more. If he is somewhat of a male fashionista, Karmaloop, the trendy clothing, sneaker and accessory line, is also having a 30 percent off sale. Their items are good enough for Kanye West so they will be good for your man too.

Looking for a couples gift or want to share something together? Call up your local hotel and ask about overnight or weekend couples packages. It’s the off-season for hotels, and with the economy still at a low-point, hotels are doing everything they can to attract business. Couples packages often include couples massages, restaurant deals and of course, champagne.

Finally, for the couple who might not want to work things out, a new voicemail service, slydial, will be ideal. Slydial allows you to connect directly to someone’s voicemail, skipping the waiting, the ringing and the risk of your ex answering. The creator of the product, MobileSphere, has applications for iPhones, Blackberrys, and Windows Mobile. Since it’s launch just 3 months ago, slydial has had more than one million calls placed through the service. Just dial 267-SLYDIAL and follow the prompts.

Valentine’s Day is an age-old tradition; a day set aside for exchanging love with your partner via gifts or cards. ‚ Some may argue it’s another heterosexual “Hallmark” invention but according to a current poll on lesbian dating and community site PinkSofa.com, 93 percent of lesbians embrace it.

So how do most lesbians like to celebrate Valentine’s Day and what should you bestow upon your sweetheart to keep those flames burning? According to a third of the 1,700 lesbian respondents, the number one most wanted gift was a romantic weekend getaway.

If that’s out of the budget you could always consider the next two most popular wishes. Simply some loving kisses or, for something more rigorous, a full body massage with essential oils. ‚ For those more inclined in the kitchen she’d probably be content with a home-cooked candlelight dinner, an option more favored than taking her out for a meal.

If none of the above appeal your lover, you are starting to get into dangerous waters.‚ The rest of the preferences were chosen by 5 percent or less, although it seems hard to argue with their choice, ‚ who said they would love to receive a poem written just for them.

Surprisingly a dozen red roses, a champagne bubble bath or a box of chocolates are just not going to cut it. Forget the practical approach such as a hardware store gift certificate too, that will get you nowhere. And‚ don’t even surprise her with a ring, only 2 percent of women chose that option.

So, all things considered, it seems you need to save your pennies, pack the lip balm and candles, and get your maps out to start planning that weekend trip. If you combine the top four most popular Valentine desires you will be golden.

Looking more like eHarmony than a modern racing game, Electronic Arts is using Burnout: Paradise in a new marketing campaign targeting couples — very appropriate for Valentine’s Day.

With a series of YouTube videos, EA is driving home the point that couples who play together stay together.

“Today, EA has released nine viral videos on YouTube that are a spoof of the online dating commercials we all know and love,” said EA’s Mariam Sughayer. “These ESRB-approved ads are designed to create buzz around the game’s online social gameplay, its unique “mugshot” feature and the open world racing of Paradise City. It is also a great example of new and innovative ways companies are reaching consumers in the web 2.0 world.”

One of EA’s marketing minds, Lincoln Hershberger created the ads, so be sure to send him a Valentine!

Life has ups and downs, but being able to stay happy can help us live through anything. As human beings we need interaction, care, love. In this special day, no matter what your situation is, we wish you happiness. From the archives of this editor, here is something that maybe you can relate to. Hopefully it can remind you that no matter what, all you need is love, love, love.

“Last year around this time I was criticizing and making fun of the Hallmark abused holiday of Valentine’s Day. The week before the day, to which some people refer to as “black (insert day of the week in which the holiday falls here),” I was not expecting anything big except for the typical card from my mom. I had no plans, no date, no nothing. When I got home after work I was surprised with a beautiful bouquet of tulips- and a note from a high school friend with whom I hadn’t spoken since graduation.

These were my first ever delivered flowers, and they were delivered on Valentine’s day. I was so happy, and so sad at the same time. I had been talking horrors about how people stress to show their love for others when they could just do it everyday without spending money on gifts, like flowers. Needless to say I fell in love with the holiday and with the true meaning behind it. Even if you can show someone you love them every other day, Valentine’s Day is that special time when a rose, a smile, a kiss, have a meaningful value because someone thought about you much more.

As Valentine’s nears this 2006 I am caught in the middle of wanting somebody to remember me, and staying away from being materialistic. Expecting presents was what I had criticized in the first place. Now, however, I realize that my day will be sad even if I end up with a rose, a smile, or a kiss. Because the person I think of does not think of me in return. I came to realize that all the times I criticized lover’s day I had been afraid of facing the truth, I was alone and I didn’t like it. Therefore, I decided to shun upon the day of love and friendship to repress my true feelings.

I don’t hate this holiday, I just hate the fact that the person I want to spend it with is already in a relationship. I hate the fact that I didn’t have the guts to say, “hey I like you” before; and I hate the fact that I can’t do anything about it now. This is what I believe is the reason behind the critiques of major holidays. Some people say it is a marketing campaign, but in reality they may not have the need to be marketed to and feel alienated. Well, I must face the facts.

Even if my platonic love is taken, I have friends and family who care for me. Even if I will be working, I can still relax by watching a romantic comedy that will give me hopes. Even if I dislike factors in my life, I must accept them and deal with them rather than masquerading them in vane.

To any fellow Valentine’s Day haters who are reading this, take a second to think about why you “hate” the celebration. Is it because you’ve been hurt? Maybe because you haven’t found love? Maybe you’ve never been loved? There’s hope, I’m an optimist. This Tuesday, February 14, 2006, leave your place happy and prepared to say, “hey I like you;” to life, to friends, to crushes, or to yourself.

In such a jolly holiday we should all be able to enjoy no matter what. In the meantime, I will buy a red shirt, a bag of lollipops, and smile during Valentine’s Day knowing that, in the words of the accurate and talented James Blunt, “I will never be with you.”

Historically, February has been a time of declaration for many people around the world.

For example, in the US on February 2, Groundhog Day declares that winter’s end is or isn’t less then six weeks away. And in Brazil from February 2 through 5, Carnival declares a commitment of self-denial and commitment to God for the next 40 days. In the US on February 3, the Super Bowl declares the best team in football for the season. Mardi Gras is celebrated in the several countries to mark the end of the Christmas fortnight and the preparation of the Easter season. February 7 declares the Chinese New Year, and February is Black History Month.

Despite all that is declared during these 28 days, or 29 with the declaration of the leap year, they all pale to the declaration of love on February 14.

No matter who you are or if you believe that Valentine’s Day is a holiday made up to sell candy (cynic) or a true holiday of lovers (romantic) you can not deny the seduction and lure of a red heart filled with sweet treats.

This time is a really big time in relationships and how it is handled is (yes to my feminists I apologize but it is true) determined by the male partner. Please afford me a little stereotypical-ness, because I am speaking of traditions and historical behaviors. So if you see that you could be on of these types of guy or you are a woman with this type of man, and you want to make this year different and surprise her, I will include a few tips.

Let me ease the tension and say that you do not have to do this every year. Just like a woman will remember the bad things that you did for a long time, she will remember the good things even longer. So every few years do something great, but each year create a very sweet and romantic declaration that is all yours.

The Romantic Guy: you have a foothold on the sentimental and sensuous. The rose petals and candlelit dinners are all great and wonderful. To add to the phenomena try to find out things about her (by asking her not her friends or family) that you may have overlooked in the past. For example, when she is alone, what does she do? Does she like to read or knit…? Or is there some hobby that she used to have or would like to take up?

Make her a coupon book for twelve 1 hour intervals that she can spend uninterrupted by, kids or you to enjoy her interest or get her a subscription to a magazine that covers her topic. (This has an added bonus of a year long romantic notion that will do well for you in many positions, I mean ways!) If she likes the diamonds and all don’t skip it, just add a little something. It will be worth the effort.

The attire for this couple is all about the deep reds and pink, from lingerie to a formal dress. Dinner should be a slinky dress that emphasizes all of her assets. For him it should be a fitted dress tee and sport coat with slacks that emphasizes the gluts just a bit. (yes guys we are looking at your tushie too.)

The Got You Already Guy: you are clueless and need the most help of all. You think that because at some point you caught some unsuspecting woman off guard does not mean that your job is done for the rest of the relationship. Relationships require that what you do to get a girl is what you must do to keep her. So Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to show her that you value her in some way. Just showing up everyday is not enough. Take the sentimental journey and buy her the same type of flowers that you bought on your first date or take her to the restaurant that you met at or something like that. Then give her an affordable piece of jewelry that she can wear daily. This will remind her of that one time that you were so sweet to her and she will forgive you for being "stupid" and "taking her for granted again."

This date night should be as dressy or as casual as the date that you are reincarnating. Keep the surprise intact (important for the best impact) just say we are going out on Valentine’s and you should dress like — then pick an outfit that you have seen her wear. Try to be vague and don’t have her in raggedy jean and a tee when she needs to have on great jeans and a hot top. She is going to want to feel beautiful to you that night so no wondering eyes!

Mr. Forgetful: you are very sweet indeed but forget the most important times to a woman. To avoid missing that important date plan ahead by pre-buying gifts for each occasion. There are stores that you can order from select a ship date that will have it to her on time. The big thing is do it while you are thinking about it. Forgetting is a very hurtful thing. The woman will believe that she is not important to you and that is why you just forgot!

Send her notes weeks in advance if you want to go out. Tell her how to dress and to call you with a sexy message before she starts to get ready for the date. This will serve as a reminder for you and get the romance started before you two even see each other for the date. One thing that Mr. Forgetful never forgets is how much he loves his woman and it always shows and this will be the best accessory for your date. She will start to feel as special to you as you know that she is. It will be magical!

Mr. It Is Just Another Day: you need a reality check. Yes everyday is just another day. But some days are special and even if she agrees with you (with her mouth) that it is just another day: she does not feel that way. If your woman likes to look nice then she wants to feel special. She wants that big bouquet of flowers to show up and something special at home waiting. Woman like everyone to know that they are loved and special and this is the day that you can make that happen. Sending flowers on non special occasions sends the wrong message (like, I’m sorry or I’m in the dog house).

You are not sticking it to the man, you are sticking it to you woman. To make both of you comfortable make it a casual date night. See a movie in or out in jeans or pajamas. If you don’t wear pajamas make a cute tee shirt for her and boxer briefs for you in the appropriate themed attire. Just make it special. She will never forget it.

Mr. Selfish: you are good hearted but going to a football game or hanging out with you and the boys at a sports bar is not a good Valentine’s date. Your relationship is about you and your woman not her and all of you all. Hanging out is great and the fact that she does not mind the gang is awesome and she is truly a rare find.

If Valentine’s fall out on hang out night, take her to an early dinner and do something romantic and give her the gifts that you have selected for her and then you both go hang out with the gang. She will have something to brag to her girls about and she will feel special the entire night. No matter how out of control you and the night may get, she will have that loving look in her eye.

Dress casual for this date. Jeans are perfect with a printed tee and a sweater. This will make her feel that you dressed up a little for the date but you will still feel great and not have to sacrifice a great night that you both enjoy anyway!

Remember this is a time to declare something. You are going to declare, she is mine or she is not. Whichever you decide do it in style.

Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love. Treat your sweetheart to present or activity that breaks the norm and leaves a lasting memory. Here’s Blast Magazine’s gift guide to make this February 14th one to remember.

What to Get Your Man:

He may be hard to shop for and not give you many ideas when it comes to present shopping. But whether you’re dating a serious type or have Romeo waiting at your door, we’ve got just the gift to set his heart on fire.

For the Practical Lover:

Brookstone is your answer. What other store allows you to play with innovative products, shop for your lover and have a massage in a chair all in one place? I have two favorites at Brookstone for Valentine’s Day gifts.

NAP Cuddle Blanket, $45.00

This has to be the softest, most comfortable blanket I have ever felt. Perfect for an afternoon nap or cuddling up in front of the television, this blanket can delight your sweetheart and benefit you as well! While he would probably never buy this for himself, he won’t be able to resist wrapping the both of you in it together.

Charging Valet, $29.00 or $75.00

If your boyfriend loves electronics and you constantly find his IPod, PDA, camera, and cell phone misplaced in his room, this could be the perfect gift. Made in several different finishes, Brookstone’s charging valet allows him to store and charge his electronics neatly in one location. It also has a space for his watch, money clip, loose change and whatever else he has scattered around his room. One charging valet has room for six devices, while the other only fits two electronics.

For the Sentimental Lover:

Putting thought into your present will make whatever you get him memorable. Think back to past conversations, your best memories together and try to remember something that you shared…then recreate it!

Scrapbook, $30.00 and up

Recommended for those who have been dating for a year or longer, a scrapbook is a perfect way to document your relationship and save your memories for years to come. Since you’re probably the photographer in the relationship, I’m sure you have a collection of photographs that he’d love to have a copy of and show off. Depending on how detailed you decide to make it; scrapbooks can get pricey. Perhaps fully complete the first few pages and leave the rest as a work in progress.

Autographed Sports Memorabilia, $25.00 and up

If his Sundays are spent watching the game, why not let him know you appreciate his passion for sports? There are many websites that provide an array of autographed team memorabilia for a range of prices. Depending on the popularity of his favorite team, your wallet may get lighter. My favorites include autographed baseballs, framed photos of teams and players, and jerseys. Share his love for the game and you’ll be the star of his team in no time.

What to Get Your Woman:

What do you get for the girl who has everything? A question most boyfriends have asked themselves at one point during their relationship. The answer is, get her something that comes from your heart because an expression of your feelings for her is one thing she can never have enough of.

For the Athletic Girl:

Assuming she enjoys listening to music when she’s working out or taking a power walk, get her the gift that keeps on giving.

Nike IPod Sport Kit, $29.00

The dynamic duo of Apple and Nike create a sensational product for the fan of the IPod Nano and Nike sneaker. This wireless sensor allows you to track your workout progress and get feedback on your performance. She’ll have the run of her life and have your present to thank!

For the Sentimental Girl:

Jewelry, $100 and up

Jewelry is a girl’s best friend. Silver or gold, diamonds or pearls, get her a piece that catches the eye and reminds her of you. Whether you have money to spend, or are on a tight budget, pick the jewelry item that has meaning to the two of you. Perhaps you spent a wonderful weekend at the beach this summer, check out the Tiffany’s Elsa Peretti Starfish pendant, $235.00 or Swarovski crystal Holly Starfish Pierced Earrings, $55.00. A piece of jewelry with meaning behind it makes her sparkle even brighter.

For the Adventure Queen:

Weekend Getaway, $175 and up

Whisk your woman away to secluded beach town, snowy chalet or bustling city so she can remember Valentine’s Day as a weekend affair of activities and romance. Wherever you decide to take her, make sure you have your itinerary ready with room for change. Find the best restaurants on citysearch.com and check the Internet for points of interest. She’ll love that you took the initiative to plan a weekend for two!

Themed Presents:

I am a fan of putting together themed presents and when you find out how easy it is, you will be too! Let’s take the above gifts as examples.

Cuddle Blanket paired with his favorite DVD, and a box of popcorn … a night at home is complete.

Charging valet paired with a fun new gadget whether it’s a monogrammed money clip, or the IPod Nano he’s been eyeing, he’ll love the accessory he can store on his new organizer.

A sexy piece of lingerie paired with a sex toy, box of condoms, Karma Sutra book and deliciously scented candle create a night of seduction at your fingertips.

For both of you:

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to spice things up. Show off your inner vixen and have him loving this holiday…and you like never before.

Sexy Lingerie, $40.00 and up

It’s time to show off your body and buy a present that makes you feel beautiful. The delight he’ll take in seeing your confidence and of course hot undergarments will ignite his passionate side. Perhaps surprise him with a tantalizing strip tease, or if you’re daring, come over wearing just your "present" underneath your coat.

Sex Toys, $15.00 and up

Whether you’re a long time fan of sex toys or want to try something new in the bedroom, surprising your man with a new plaything could be the best Valentine’s Day gift he’s ever received. The Internet provides a plethora of toys for anyone’s imagination and it also allows you to remain anonymous.

Show him you can be both naughty and nice this February 14th.

(ARA) — In the name of love, romantics and loved ones alike will partake in the annual tradition of exchanging flowers, candy and gifts, come Feb. 14. While the majority of Valentine’s Day romantics will offer loved ones the usual material wares, most will overlook a few simple things that will really impress their valentine — a small list of grocery store items, a little finesse and home-made treats.

Developed for this Valentine’s Day season, King’s Hawaiian –the nation’s leading and original producer of Hawaiian Sweet bread — has compiled a series of tips and recipes to complement romantic homemade dinners with some island-style elegance.

Create a unique dining experience — Try to surprise that special someone by situating the dinner table in a unique area of your home. Place your table in front of the fireplace or try starting dinner a little earlier and find a window-view location where you both can enjoy the sunset. This can create restaurant-style ambiance within the comforts of your home.

Set the mood — It’s all about creating the perfect ambiance, so dim the lights and light some candles. The soothing glow of a candle can easily warm the heart.

Decorate with emotion in mind — When decorating the dinning area make sure to use the right colors. Red and pink are the ideal option, as they capture and stimulate emotion. Also, scatter flower petals over the table to create that perfect romantic touch. To create island-style elegance, use tropical flowers instead of roses, such as hibiscus and anthuriums (if well chosen, both will also capture the red and pink color profile).

Present a gift from the heart — Heartfelt gifts create lasting memories. Create a photo album of your fondest destination memories shared with your valentine and present it during dinner. Include photos from your favorite vacation spot, or somewhere you hope to travel to together. Your special someone is sure to be impressed by the effort of a gift that expresses sentiment and emotion.

End the perfect evening with a little chocolate — Nothing is more enchanting than ending the night on a sweet note. Pair your favorite fruit with chocolate fondue, or prepare a unique dessert dish and garnish it with an edible flower — a touch that is sure to make the night unforgettable.

If you are in need of a delicious recipe, try one of these easy-to-prepare delights from King’s Hawaiian:

King’s Hawaiian Chocolate Paradise Panini

Ingredients:

13-ounce jar of hazelnut chocolate spread
1 jar chunky peanut butter
Mini-marshmallows
1 16-ounce round loaf, King’s Hawaiian Sweet Bread

Preheat your panini sandwich press. Cut 1/2-inch thick vertical slices into the King’s Hawaiian round loaf. Evenly layer peanut butter on one slice and the chocolate hazelnut spread on the other. Distribute an even layer of marshmallows and place the halves together. Place sandwich into the press and, depending on the heat, remove after two to four minutes. Cut into halves or thirds. — Serve immediately. Makes 8-10 dessert sandwiches.

King’s Hawaiian Chocolate Bread Pudding

Ingredients:

6 cups (about half of 16-ounce. loaf) King’s Hawaiian Sweet Bread, lightly packed 1/2-inch cubes
2 1/2 cups half-and-half
1 1/2 cups (9 ounces.) semi-sweet chocolate chips
4 large eggs
1/4 cups granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/8 teasoon. salt

Heat half-and-half in 2-quart saucepan over medium heat until small bubbles form around edge. Remove from heat, stir in chocolate, mix until melted. Cool slightly. Whisk together eggs, sugar, vanilla and salt. Fold 1 cup cooled chocolate into egg mixture. Stir in remaining chocolate until blended. Pour chocolate mixture over bread cubes and mix until bread is well coated. Cover and let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Lightly apply non-stick spray to six 6-ounce custard cups. Mound bread equally into each cup. Place cups on baking sheet. Bake in preheated 325 degree F oven 35 to 40 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out nearly clean. Best served warm with chocolate or vanilla sauce. (A greased 8 by 8 by 2-inch pan may be substituted.) Bake 40 to 45 minutes in preheated 325 degree oven. Makes 6 servings.

Royal Hawaiian Tiramisu

Ingredients:

3/4 cup cold espresso or strong coffee
2/4 cup coffee liqueur
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
2 packages (3.4 ounces) instant vanilla pudding mix
3 cups half-and-half
3 tablesopon. amaretto liqueur
4 ounces semisweet chocolate bar, finely chopped

Topping:

1 1/2 cups whipping cream
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup sliced almonds, toasted

Blend espresso with coffee liqueur. Set aside. Beat cream cheese with electric mixer until smooth. On low speed, slowly add pudding mix, half-and-half and amaretto. Beat one minute until blended. Set aside. Trim off 1 inch of bread dome to make level. Cutting horizontally, slice remaining loaf into three equal layers. To assemble cake, place the top slice into the bottom of an 8- or 9-inch springform pan. Drizzle 1/3 of espresso mixture evenly over first layer. Top with 1/3 of pudding mixture and then 1/4 of chocolate. Repeat layering with remaining 2 bread slices. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate 4 hours or overnight.

Topping:
Remove rim from pan. Whip cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until fluffy. Spread over top and sides. Garnish top with almonds and remaining chocolate.

Makes 12 servings.

Blast’s fashionista, Elle Bowman, guides you through the hardest part of dating for some, getting dressed.

The Valentine’s Date Outfit Guide for Her

For an upscale affair, the little black dress is always a winner. Want a spicy, jaw-dropping look that will make that special someone notice you? Make it caliente with red, which is commonly looked upon as the color of love and passion. You will stand out in a room swarming with little black dresses. For this type of affair, keep the outfit traditional but add accessories to give it a special touch. For example, turn a hot necklace into a belt, wear appropriate but awesome shoes and carry an over-the-top purse. Make it your outfit, not the designer’s.

A casual chic affair, like a club or classy restaurant has much fewer restrictions, but let the jeans stay home tonight. Step it up a bit by wearing form-fitting fabrics that bring out your feminine charm. This date is about him being the man and you being the woman. The right clothes will give you a really flirty approach to the evening and you’ll have a great time. Love comes when you least expect it, so just enjoy the evening and let the chips fall where they may.

On a casual date, pair a sexy low-cut top of a soft, feminine color with the most flattering jeans you can find. Finish the look with amazing black pumps. The silhouette that you create will give you a taller, slimmer look. No one will be able to resist staring at this fabulous you. Couple it with a fashionable handbag and a pair of sunglasses.

The Valentine’s Date Outfit Guide for Him

Upscale, black-tie events for a man require a suit or tux. There is no way around it! Make yourself stand out with red accessories. If you have the personality to pull off wearing red shoes, it might get you the girl that likes that sort of thing. Select a cologne that smells great on you, this will definitely give you added sex appeal.

A man on a casual/chic date should wear dress slacks, a crew neck shirt and leather slip-on shoes as a foundation. A button-down shirt on top of the crew neck creates the boy next door look. A blazer for a power look, and a leather jacket makes for a bad boy look. Prefer a more urban feel? Add a ¾ length jacket. This creates a place to start that has endless possibilities. The tailored jeans are still in, and a nice jacket will complete the look.

The accessories that you select makes all the difference in the world: choose a Tag Heuer or Fossil watch, a platinum ring and a belt and shoe color that match and you’re good to go.

Casual date attire begins with jeans and a white t-shirt, and you build from there. This is a great foundation to achieve a variety of looks. Adding a button-down shirt with just the bottom few closed will get you a preppy look. Add an oversized button-down to get a street look. You can go with a black leather jacket and black square toe slip-on shoes for a more manly look.

Decide what look that you want to have and add the accessories that make the grade. Eyewear/sunglasses can add a certain level, if that’s what you’re going for. She’ll be trying hard to impress you, so try to match the effort.

As Valentine’s Day stirs feelings of love and lust, give the object of your affection a gift they’ll never forget. The Sexy Gift of the Month Club provides an innovative way to surprise your special someone and bring spice into your relationship.

Blush Group LLC, provides its customers with ‘the art of sensual living’. Is this group the sponsor of the gift club or what? Creator Miller Canning’s idea was to design products that make her customers feel good. In addition to selling sex-related items, she offers gifts like sweet smelling soaps, bubble baths and an urban strip aerobics DVD led by a fitness expert.

“Our company tries to stay away from novelty items and focus on helping women and couples find quality products to enhance their sex lives,” said Canning.

Blush’s gift clubs are its signature items and have become the pillar of its success. Blush’s initial club, The Dirty Book Club, provides customers with a new, erotic book each month. While The Dirty Book Club satisfies customers’ reading pleasures, The Sexy Gift of the Month Club, provides customers with a sexy surprise to look forward to.

Imagine receiving a present every month that delights one of the five senses. Blush offers four, different packages of sexy gifts to bring excitement into the bedroom. Choose from the "Mood Setter" ($35.00), "Romantic Surprises" ($40.00), "Erotic Adventures" ($50.00), or "Premium" ($115.00). After starting the club in December 2005, the club has earned fans.

"I think the club appeals to anyone who wants to explore their sexuality, but is nervousabout going into a public store where they can be seen," said Canning. "Also, I think people who view sex as play and sensuality as something that is on the inside aremore apt to choose the club."

On the other hand, the Sexy Gift of the Month Club seeks to help customer’s become more open to their sexuality.

"It’s a great opportunity to not be responsible for pushing a partner to try something that he or she normally might not have tried. A recipient can just say, ‘hey, it’s here, so let’s try it.’ We give them the freedom to test boundaries with little embarrassment or guilt," added Canning.

With household sex toy parties on the rise and more and more people becoming interested in freely expressing their sexuality, the Sexy Gift of the Month Club provides a new outlet for eroticism.

"Typically people order 3-6 months, but we love the folks who re willing to try new products for a year. I think you get more variety and many more options to explore," said Canning. Best sellers include the "Original Rabbit Pearl," ($78.00) "Lily," ($134.00) "Accuvibe," ($68.00) as well as "O’My Natural Lubricant" ($16.50/$26.50) and a striptease dance DVD, "Strip To It" ($24.00).

"When I watch an Oprah show that is covering sexuality I listen to her audience and see how well our products map to their needs," said Canning.

The Sexy Gift Club of the Month aspires to make every day feel like Valentine’s Day and every relationship feel exciting and sensual.

"Imagine a surprise once a month that reminds you to slow down…or speed up," said Canning.
