You know Megan Fox. Actress, model, woman of your dreams? You know the one who starred in the first two Transformers movies? The one you’ve mocked for her Gamertag on Xbox Live?

Wait..what?

Yep, if you’ve been on Halo: Reach lately and played online against a girl with a strange gamertag, you may have made fun of one of the hottest actresses in America.

“I have Halo: Reach, but I am playing online. I don’t really play in story mode anymore,” the actress confessed to Collider.

Though Fox didn’t say exactly what her gamertag was for obvious reasons, she did say that it’s the main reason gamers — mainly men make fun of her. “”Xbox Live players have no idea. They make fun of my gamertag because it is funny, and they are all a bunch of guys and it is clear that I am a girl so they make fun of my name, and they have no idea they are making fun of me,” she added.

It just goes to show you, be nice online kids — you could be making a friend of a supermodel/actress/robot fighter

What do you say about one of the worst films of the year?

0.5 out of 4 stars

There is a specific event which almost every person who has lived in a city has dealt with at least once. You’re walking down the street, and a mentally-ill homeless person stops you and, without warning, starts screaming nonsense in your face. A shot of adrenaline hits your brain, and suddenly you’re taken from your normal life and set in a dangerous, unpleasant and surreal world. You stand there, unable to move for a moment, before you snap back to yourself, and walk carefully past the person accosting you.

Watching “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” is like that. Only you’re not allowed to walk away. You have to sit there as it goes on. And on. For two and a half hours.

This would not be so awful if not for the fact that listening to someone scream at you for so long is also apparently incredibly boring.

Directed by: Michael Bay
Written by: Ehren Kruger
Starring: Shia LeBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, John Turturro
Rated: PG-13

Everything, and yet somehow nothing, happens in this movie. To start with, director Michael Bay and writer Ehren Kruger re-imagine the moon landing as a top-secret investigation of the crash of an alien ship. This allows Bay to include such nuggets as a computer-animated JFK, a Richard Nixon look-alike, and Neil Armstrong exclaiming “My God, it’s some kind of giant metal face!”

The rest of the plot would take too long to explain, and would require I expound on the history of ethnic cleansing of Autobots by the evil Decepticons, and the continuation of their civil war on Earth. Frankly having to do that would make me die a little inside. Suffice it to say the movie has Chernobyl, anonymous terrorists in the Middle East, Russian cosmonauts and gangsters. There’s a hot babe named Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (a Victoria’s Secret model!) who is dating Shia LaBeouf instead of Megan Fox, who apparently was fired for being a bitch. There are character actors like John Turturro, Frances McDormand and John Malkovich gnawing scenery in the background, and Patrick Dempsey and his hair being evil in the foreground. There are all sorts of robots- geek robots, ghetto robots, anonymous steampunk evil robots, and what sound like Irish bruiser robots. And they all turn into designer cars. And explosions!! Thousands of explosions! Explosions everywhere, forever! And it’s all in 3D- even Whiteley’s ass!

The result of all these ingredients is both a cinematic manifestation of a 14-year-old boy’s psyche, and a love letter to American militarism and excess. There is crane shot after crane shot of muscle cars rolling down highways in a convoy; the camera luxuriates over the curves of a BMW, or the image of a fighter jet, more lovingly than anything else in the movie. The whole thing literally ends with a bunch of overgrown Hasbro toys posing majestically over a destroyed downtown Chicago, a battered American flag still waving behind them.

If this all seems pretty bad ass, it is- for about 20 minutes. But there’s just so much of it- endless battle scenes, rampant commercialism, gratuitous, yet bloodless violence- it becomes monotonous. How many times can a person watch a computer-animated machine triumphantly return from certain death and attack in slow-motion? Because it happens about a dozen times in this movie, and by the third time I could feel the people around me checking their watches.

In the effort of fairness, it’s important to mention that much of the 3D-filming is actually pretty terrific. The scenes in space are particularly lovely to look at, offering kaleidoscopic landscapes of stars and planets that shape the scene and give it a sense of flight. However, Bay isn’t content to just make the showpiece scenes 3-dimensional; even throwaway scenes of two guys sitting in a room has to be made bigger, larger, in your face. After all 157 minutes, my head was pounding, my eyes were weak, and I needed to pause at the door to re-adjust to a world where John Malkovich’s forehead isn’t 14 feet high and coming right at me.

What else can I say to make you not see this movie? Because I really don’t want you to pay good money, that you earned with your hard work in a poor economy, to reward this bloated, monstrous Frankenstein. Believe me, I love a good movie where shit blows up; in fact, I really liked the first “Transformers,” which had sun-drenched cinematography, a rapier wit and a healthy dose of irony.

But as the axiom goes, just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should. I have a feeling that through the entire course of filming this behemoth, Michael Bay never once heard, “No, Michael, we’re not doing that. That’s a bad idea and it’s stupid.” Everyone needs to hear that once in a while, even guys who make a lucrative career of visually attacking us in movie theaters. Bay’s movie might have given me a good shot of adrenaline. But in the end I just wanted to be able to walk on by.

Biggest surprise of the year? Yeah.

Considering how awful the recent Michael Bay Transformers movies have been, and the fact that there’s surprisingly never been even a halfway decent Transformers game ever made, I expected precious little in regards to popping Transformers: War For Cybertron, into my Xbox 360. (It’s also available for the Ps3)

Well, I’m glad that my pessimism didn’t pay off this time, because not only is Transformers: War For Cybterton not an abomination like the aforementioned Michael Bay hack-a-thons, it’s also a game that will supply gamers and Transformers fanboys a few hours of mindless fun.

Simply put, War For Cybertron works, because it steals from other successful game franchises. Those being, the graphics being powered by the Unreal Engine 3, and more importantly, the shameless lifting of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare’s multiplayer. But more on that in just a bit.

The story mode for War For Cybertron is set long before the events of the Transformers: Prime television show. It’s split into Autobot and Decepticon missions, and one has the choice to pick either side from the beginning. From there, each level allows you to pick one robot from a pre-set group of three who each have their own class, like Leader (Optimus), Soldier (Bumblebee) and Scout (Ratchet). Truthfully, the missions for both sides showed little variety, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing as each mission is basically just “blow the hell out of everyone”. Still, despite the countless generic robots you’ll mow down, you do eventually battle or cross paths with Transformers you do recognize, and when those moments happen, you’ll probably find yourself wishing that the whole game could be like that, much like I did. Don’t get me wrong. The levels are good, but I just think with a little more effort, they could have been great.

So, about the multiplayer that *ahem* liberally borrows from Modern Warfare. Well, from limited customization of your character (ooh! I get to make my guy a different color?!) to the perks, to the leveling system, things will look real familiar. However, those somewhat useless “classes” in the single-player mode make much more sense when playing against others online, because real live people know what the hell they’re doing, and can utilize the advantages of using a sluggish Soldier over a quick n’ nimble Scout. The standard checklist of multiplayer modes are all represented here, from deathmatch to capture the flag, but where Transformers: War For Cybertron really shines is their version of Horde Mode, called Escalation. Waves of robots attack you and your teammates, and you earn points for each kill. You can then in turn use said points to heal, buy weapons, or reload during breaks in the action or in the middle of a battle. Not to mention, this is the only part of the game where you’ll get to see some old favorites that aren’t in the story mode, like Shockwave and Jazz.

The Blast Factor: Look, if you need convincing in regards to this game, let me just sum it up like this. Transformers: War For Cybertron is this year’s Batman: Arkham Asylum. Just another movie/comic book based game that everyone and their gaming brother thought was going to be terrible, but ended up being really, REALLY good.

And if that doesn’t do it, well, Peter Cullen (The voice of Optimus Prime) is in the game and spouts enough awesome, overly dramatic lines that makes it worth the price of admission alone.

“Absolutely” said Gibson when asked what was happening with a “Transformers 3.” “It’s in motion.”

In interviews following “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” director Michael Bay made remarks saying he wanted a break from big blockbusters, saying that he was in the process of working on a dark comedy. Gibson reassured fans that Bay would indeed be getting behind another “Transformers” film.

“Michael Bay, he definitely needs to take a break from (“Transformers”), understandably so, but this is the movie — the biggest movie he’s ever directed in his life” said Gibson. “And so, he can keep producing all of these other projects, but he is officially the king of geeks.”

Gibson’s role in “Revenge of the Fallen” was markedly smaller than his role in the first “Transformers” film, a fact he claimed he was sure was going to be remedied for a third installment.

“I will absolutely be back” he said, “and my part is going to be bumped up.”

My eyes have never been as exhausted as trying to follow this film.

2 out of 4 stars

SPOILERS ARE CONTAINED IN THIS REVIEW.

So my co-reviewer Meg Vick really liked “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” Like, really, really liked it. To the point that she told me there were tears of joy streaming out of her eyes during it.

Maybe it was because she saw the film in its theatrical release, and I saw it in IMAX. But if there were any tears streaming out of my eyes, it was from pain and eye exhaustion.

Michael Bay likes big, blockbuster action movies, that much is clear. Headlining hotty Megan Fox has said in numerous interviews that, in Michael Bay films, it’s not about the acting; it’s about the running and screaming. Problem is, that’s all “Revenge of the Fallen” is.

In Bay’s 2007 “Transformers” the robots were secondary to the stories of the people. Through Shia LaBeouf’s charisma and the eyes of the wide array of humans, it was easy for audiences unfamiliar with the idea of “Transformers” to become acquainted with the premise.

Directed by: Michael Bay
Written by: Ehren Kruger and Roberto Orci
Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Tyrese Gibson
Running time: 150 mins
Rating: PG-13
Seen at: Jordan’s Furniture Verizon IMAX Theater in Reading

With “Revenge of the Fallen” which picks up a bit after the events of “Transformers” not only are two main (and fun) characters from the first film (played by Rachel Taylor and Anthony Anderson) inexplicably nowhere to be seen, but military studs Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson only begin to play a major role in the film at its end.

To replace them is Sam Witwicky’s (Shia LaBeouf) conspiracy-theory happy roommate Leo, played by Ramon Rodriguez. The returning cast members respond to “Revenge of the Fallen” like returning fans of the first film; they have the basic premise, but are still a bit confused. Newcomers to the franchise can relate more to Leo: clueless and running around screaming, “What is going on!”

If “Revenge of the Fallen” skimped on the humans, it can be said it made up for it with the robots. The first film featured about 10 to 20 robots, most named during the course of the film. “Revenge of the Fallen” by comparison, introduces over 40 robots with only 5 carryovers from the first film: Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Ironhide, Megatron and Starscream.

Among these new robots, only three are at all memorable: Jetfire, Devastator and the Fallen himself. This is enough to put lifetime Transformers fans into a coma of joy, but for those who can’t recognize and name a Transformer by sight, it is unfortunately overwhelming.

What worked for the first “Transformers” was its great combination of snark and action. In “Revenge of the Fallen” Michael Bay has said he has upped everything. But instead of upping everything, he overcompensates. Instead of gradually continuing to introduce film-goers to the idea of “Transformers” like he did in the first, he assumes everyone is familiar and sacrifices plot development for brief interchanges of dialogue to connect massive action scenes. It doesn’t work.

Michael Bay knows how to make a good action scene, that’s a fact. He knows how to make things explode and keep everything high octane. What he doesn’t know is how to edit these great action scenes together. The camera flies back and forth across the screen, <a href=""http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/06/24/how-the-transformers-revenge-of-the-fallen-imax-experience-compares-with-the-dark-knight/"">splicing between normal widescreen and IMAX shots all the while, which isn’t exciting but dizzying. Tears streaming out of your eyes? It’s because you’re trying too hard to figure out what the hell is going on on screen.

The problem is that the camera work was dizzying throughout the entire film, not just the action shots. Michael Bay’s favorite camera movement is the counter-clockwise 180 degree spin. Sam and Mikaela (Fox) making out? Let’s spin around them. Drama going on in a military hangar? Let’s spin around it. Never is the camera in one place; it’s always moving “" and fast.

What’s worse is that Bay hides his problems editing with the quick camera movement. One of the best scene from “Transformers” is when Optimus Prime transforms for the first time. The camera is steady on him, and if you slow down the rate of the frames when watching it, every little piece can be seen moving to transform the leading Transformer from truck to robot. Don’t expect that in this. Transformations either happen too quickly to be followed or occur behind objects while the camera is once again swooping around.

Despite all this, the movie could still have been salvaged if we cared. Not everyone was a fan of the first “Transformers” but at least it made you care about the characters. With the focus primarily on the robots this time around, it’s hard to care about Sam and Mikaela’s difficulties saying “I love you” to the other while you’re too busy being annoyed by the obnoxious new Autobot twins that have arrived (you don’t want your robots to look like idiots, you want them to look like badasses; come on) or Wheelie, a Decepticon Mikaela caught and has trained as her pet (and humps her leg just like a dog).

Too much was sacrificed in “Revenge of the Fallen” to make the Transformers seem closer to humans (a concept Optimus emphasizes in his opening dialogue) but instead makes them off-key (Bumblebee crying oil is uncomfortable and corny to watch) and too cartoony. Yes, “Transformers” is based off a cartoon, but the films are not meant to be cartoony themselves. They are meant to be big blockbuster action films.

“Revenge of the Fallen” felt carelessly done, and that is its downfall. The continuity was off, the beginning too drawn-out and the plot took too long to kick into gear. Bay seemed too distracted cramming as many explosions and Transformers as he could into the film to be bothered in the editing room. And if anyone can tell me where Wheelie went after Devastator started kicking ass, I’ll pay you $5, because it seemed to me he disappeared right off the face of this movie “" just like my interest.

And, in brief, here is why:

And yet “" and here’s the part where I really think ROTF approaches “art movie” status “" the movie’s id overload reaches such crazy levels that the fabric of reality itself starts to break down. Michael Bay has boasted about how every single shot in the movie has so much stuff going on in it, it would take your PC since the dawn of time to render one frame. After a few hours of this assault, you feel the chair melt and the floor of the movie theater becomes an angry mirror into your soul. Nothing is solid, nothing is real, everything Transforms.

I might have to go it alone; I had a partner-in-shame for “The Day The Earth Stood Still,” but will likely go stag for this one.

Everything is bigger and badder, but Bay only whets our appetites.

4 out of 4 stars

Too often sequels of successful action movies fall short of their epic predecessor. Many times it leads to third and even fourth movies (“Lethal Weapon” or “Die Hard,” anyone?) which are all enjoyable, but somehow the magic of the original is lost. As a huge fan of the first “Transformers movie,” I was expecting the same enjoyable continuation of a great movie, but I had little hope that the second one could live up to the first one’s standard. Then the impossible happened “" Michael Bay made transforming robot aliens hiding out on Earth even more awesome.

Sequels have a habit of trying to cut and paste the best aspects of the original and then amp them up or distort them just to be refreshing. There’s more action and less story or more characters and plot over development. In the newest installment of “Transformers,” director and producer Michael Bay realized he had a perfect mix the last go round and like an expert producer at the mixing board spread his fingers across all the elements and amped them equally. If you were a fan of the first movie, the second is everything it was, but more.

Directed by: Michael Bay
Written by: Ehren Kruger and Roberto Orci
Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Tyrese Gibson
Running time: 150 mins
Rating: PG-13
Seen at: Boston Common Loews

First: More robots. Having heard Optimus Prime’s call to all Autobots (nice robots) in the last film, new good guys have arrived on Earth to protect it from increasing Decepticon (evil robots) attacks. The most notable being “The Twins” “" the dirty-mouthed robot brothers who spend as much time beating each other up as they do Decepticons but are responsible for a large part of the comic relief. Decepticons also grow in numbers — from evil robot panthers to fembots – and it is safe to say Megatron (think of him as the Darth Vader of evil robots) is no longer the biggest badass in space.

Second: With more robots it is only logical that there should be more robot fights. While there were a few scuffles in the first “Transformers,” the movie cultivated around one huge robot beat down at the end of the film. In the sequel Bay spreads out the carnage, delivering huge explosions and alien ass-kicking in the first five minutes. The Autobots throw down with the Decepticons in a fight parallel to the battle of the first movie halfway through the film and you’re scared thinking they’ve blown the best beat down before we’ve found out why the Decepticons are back in the first place -”" but alas, all robot boxing is just warming up for the final epic battle. The last 45 minutes are robot on robot combat (with a little help from the humans with some shiny new Army toys).

The only thing there is slightly less of in this movie is Optimus Prime (but just in screen time. He does, as hard as it is to imagine, actually get even more badass). Granted he is leader of the Autobots and the protector of human civilization but Bay does an excellent job of showcasing the other robot talents. Both Bumblebee and Iron Hide threw punches that elicited rabid applause from the audience. There’s plenty of Decepticons to take down for every Autobot to show why Prime calls on them to “Roll out!”

It’s not all about robots though -”" the humans really stepped it up in “Revenge of the Fallen.” Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson return as head soldiers of a now elite top secret robot division of the military -”" NEST. John Turturro also reappears in all of his Sector Seven pride and glory to keep everyone laughing, but goes above and beyond to help the anti-evil-robot cause.

The human team is joined by newcomer Romano Rodriguez who plays Sam’s (Shia LaBeouf) new roommate at college, Leo. Obsessed with the “government cover up” of alien invasion, Leo gets swept up in the robot civil war and never fails to amuse with his constant back and forth between chickening out and wanting to take part in the greatest war Earth has ever seen.

That brings us to fourth: more humor. The first movie was riddled with LaBeouf’s natural sarcastic humor and robot jokes but as the danger elevates in Fallen, so do the jokes. Sam’s parents, played by Kevin Dunn and Julie White, are hysterical when dropping their only son off at college (Spoiler alert: hash brownies make everything funnier). It just shows that when it seems the world is going to end the best thing to do is laugh.

SPOILER: Most impressively is that Bay and crew managed to incorporate more story to explain the amplification of everything else. Last time we followed Sam Witwicky and the Autobots in search of “The All Spark” which was the source of power for all of Cybertron -”" the robot home planet.

“Revenge of the Fallen” opens amidst a sneak attack by NEST on the yet another discovered Decepticon and we learn that the number of evil robot attacks has increased significantly over the past year -”" but no one knows why. After finding a shard of All Spark on his shirt the day he leaves for college, the answer becomes embedded in his mind as a series of ancient alien robot symbols. The first half of the movie revolves around Sam trying to figure out what it means -”" while still arguing with him that it isn’t his war — and the second half appropriately trying to prevent Megatron (who is awakened from the sea by his even more evil master) from using Earth’s energy to jump start Cybertron again. END SPOILER

The whole ordeal does a really good job of demonstrating just how strong the robot to human connection has become. Lennox and Epps (Duhamel and Gibson) fight along the Autobots in a camaraderie that feels reminiscent of how real war buddies feel buried in the trenches together. Sam’s connection with Optimus Prime and crew is also strengthened, despite how much he initially tries to distance himself. The robot compassion for the human race comes out in their protectiveness of Sam, adding a deeper human element to their metal shells. You get the sense that there is actually something to them saving Earth rather than just feeling sorry for the human race.

I thought the first “Transformers” was as epic as it could get and no sequel could be made without diminishing at least some of what made the original so awesome. I have now learned that the first “Transformers” was merely an appetizer to the “Revenge of the Fallen”s full meal. And even though all common sense says I should be full, I can’t help but ask”¦when is dessert?

Blast went to the screening and saw the fans -- AND NEW TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN TRAILER!

About 400 Transformers fans made a lackluster appearance at yesterday’s “Transformers” screening in Boston at the Boston Common Loews.

Fans had been encouraged to dress as their favorite Transformer for a chance to win a trip to Los Angeles for the “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” premiere. Krystal Calarese from Marlboro was the only screening attendee to come in full costume.

Krystal Calarese

Calarese said she had made the costume for Transformers convention BotCon a year before, and would be adding speakers to the ensemble for an appearance at Anime Boston’s Masquerade next month.

Loving Transformers since she was young, Calarese expressed her excitement about the new movie.

“I’d just give anything to see my ‘bots on the screen,” she said.

Calarese was greeted with cheers by the screening audience as she walked in full costume into the theater.

In addition to seeing a screening of Michael Bay’s 2007 hit “Transformers,” accumulated fans were some of the first in the country to see the newest full-length “Revenge of the Fallen” trailer from Paramount.

The trailer revealed a lot more about the plot of the film: Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) goes to college, leaving behind transforming friend Bumblebee and girlfriend Mikaela (Megan Fox). He comes across a small rock fragment with strange symbols engraved on it, which embed themselves in his mind. Amidst epic shots of battling robots and images of the symbols in pyramids and etched on the ground are hints from Optimus Prime of this being Sam’s destiny – and of Megatron wanting the secrets Sam knows about the symbols.

Yahoo debuted the trailer at noon today.

“Perfect honesty: I don’t care what [the movie]‘s about. I just want to watch giant robots on the screen,” said Mike Avagianos, who traveled from Providence, RI in a Trax t-shirt to attend the screening. “I mean, what more can you expect?”

Fans young and old turned up for the event. Peter Boccelli from Stoneham showed up with an Optimus Prime helmet under his arm and his young daughter <del datetime="2009-06-23T00:06:29+00:00">Brianna</del> Briana in tow. He said to her he has always been “Daddy Prime” and she has been “Briannabee.”

“She’s Bumblebee, that’s her boy. Throughout the house, about 400 [toys] in the house,” Boccelli said of her fandom.

Entertainment Tonight is hosting the “Ultimate Transformers Fan” contest. From yesterdays nationwide submissions, 20 finalists will be chosen. The public can vote on which fan is their favorite from May 25 to June 10 on www.etonline.com.

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” hits theaters June 24, 2009.

Did any Blast readers attend the screenings or enter Entertainment Tonight’s contest? What did you think of the new trailer? Let us know your thoughts!

By the way: Because of a reporting error, we spelled the name of Briana Boccelli incorrectly.

Michael Bay will be shooting key scenes from 2009′s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” using IMAX cameras, IMAX Corporation and the studios announced today.

“The extraordinary level of detail and intensity captured by the IMAX camera creates many exciting possibilities for us with this film,” said director Michael Bay in a statement. “IMAX’s all-encompassing format will take this story to a new level, and I am once again very excited to share The IMAX Experience with Transformers fans around the world.”

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” will be released simultaneously in movie cinemas and IMAX worldwide on June 26, 2009.

Sequences shot in traditional 35mm will be digitally re-mastered for the IMAX screen, appearing in a letterbox shape. Scenes shot with IMAX cameras will expand vertically to fill the entire screen.

“The growth of the IMAX theatre network, fueled by the economical benefits of the new IMAX digital system, is driving interest from virtually all of the top studios, which is resulting in more IMAX movies for audiences to enjoy,” said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler.
