<p>Harmonix unleashed this <a title="behemoth of a title update" href="http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=166278" target="_blank">behemoth of a title update </a>earlier today for Xbox 360 and with it came a host of new features including wireless microphone support, improved hammer-ons and pull-offs, background downloading for music store purchases, and the greatly hyped Audition Mode, a tool that allows <a title="Rock Band Network" href="http://blastmagazine.com/the-magazine/gaming/gaming-news/2009/07/harmonix-announces-rock-band-network-blows-your-mind/" target="_blank">Rock Band Network</a> users the ability to rock out to their created tunes.</p>
<p>You had me at background downloading Harmonix, thank you, finally!</p>
<p>But if you own a PS3 or Wii and want the goods? Good news for the former, bad for the latter.</p>
<p>A PS3 update is only the way but currently stalled at the certification process, while a Wii rehash is nowhere, at all, to be found.</p>

<p>The folks at Autodesk have a great product. While the <a href="http://usa.autodesk.com/">Autodesk</a> suite is made up of of an astounding array of software, many of their 3-D visualization titles that have became industry standards in special effects development. Autodesk&#8217;s software is the workhorse behind movies like G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as well as video games like Gears of War 2 and Rock Band 2.</p>
<p>Blast recently sat down with Maurice Patel, entertainment industry manager at Autodesk:</p>
<p><strong>Blast: Tell us a little about Autodesk and your software products.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Patel: </strong>Autodesk software is the secret sauce behind many of the movies, games and TV ads you see today: from G.I. Joe to Evianâ€™s skating babies. We also make design software for everything from automotive design to architecture. Our digital solutions provide powerful tools for building greener buildings, eliminating wasteful physical prototypes and helping build a better, more sustainable, human environment. Our entertainment software is used to create compelling entertainment from 3D stereo movies like &#8216;Monsters and Aliens&#8217; to games like &#8216;Rock Band.&#8217;</p>
<p><strong>Blast: What exactly is your software used for in video game production?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Patel:</strong> Our software is used in many places throughout the entertainment production chain. Products like Autodesk 3ds Max and Autodesk Maya are used for visualizing, prototyping and testing ideas; for building detailed scenes and texturing and lighting them and for creating compelling digital characters like Altair.</p>
<p>Autodesk also develops middleware solutions that give artificial intelligence to digital characters so that they behave more realistically in the game. If you have played games like Assassinâ€™s Creed youâ€™ll have seen technology in action. When Altair, runs, rides and jumps our middleware makes sure he doesnâ€™t slip and slide but interacts realistically with objects and the environment.</p>

<p><strong>Blast: What makes your software different then similar software on the market?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Patel: </strong>There are many things. Firstly we believe we have some of the best tools for making compelling, believable digital characters and imbibing them with great performances. Obviously the tool is only as great as the artists that use them, the talent that makes the game, movie or TV ad so spectacular, but we strive to provide them with great technology so that they can be truly free to experiment and try out new ideas. This is done by focusing on interaction â€“ making things perform fast enough to provide immediate feedback, as well as by creating sophisticated tools that enable artists to produce the highest quality work without compromise. Also the diversity of our product portfolio helps us take the best techniques from one area and apply them in another â€“ such as compositing images or tracking objects â€“ and enables us to provide customers with more efficient production workflows</p>
<p><strong>Blast: What projects has your software been used on in the past?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Patel:</strong> Wow, where to begin the list is very long; Autodesk software has been used to create countless movies, commercials, TV shows and video games.</p>
<p>Recent movies created with Autodesk solutions include: â€˜9,â€™ â€˜G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra,â€™ â€˜Star Trek,â€™ â€˜Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,â€™ â€˜Terminator Salvationâ€™ and â€˜Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.â€™ Many of this yearâ€™s Oscar-winning and nominated films were also created with Autodesk software, such as â€˜The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,â€™ â€˜Iron Man,â€™ â€˜The Dark Knightâ€™ and â€˜Kung Fu Panda.â€™</p>
<p>Popular video games created with Autodesk art creation tools and middleware solutions include: â€˜FIFA 09,â€™ â€˜Rock Band 2,â€™ â€˜Prince of Persia,â€™ â€˜Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning,â€™ â€˜Americaâ€™s Army,â€™ â€˜Fallout 3,â€™ â€˜Gears of War 2,â€™ and â€˜Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.â€™</p>
<p><strong>Blast: Are there any upcoming projects using your software that you would like to share with our readers?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Patel:</strong> Well our customers donâ€™t like us to steal their thunder by talking about projects before they have been released publicly, but many of the upcoming visual effects movies and games slated for the holiday season have used our software as part of their production process. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recently, I had the chance to write the Boston Globe&#8217;s 2008 video game and video game accessories gift guides.</p>
<p>Building off that, here is my list of the top 10 video games of 2008.</p>
<p><strong>11. The Honorable Mentions:</p>
<p>Mega Man IX &#8212; Platformer</strong></p>
<p>(PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii) Ladies, want to buy your 20-something man a gift that will make him giggle like an eighth grader? Spend 10 bucks on Mega Man 9, a new take on the hyper-challenging classic video game that requires quick reflexes to battle a horde of evil robots and their sinister master.</p>
<p><strong>AND &#8212; Final Fantasy IV for DS, Call of Duty: World at War, de Blob for Wii</strong></p>
<p><strong>10. The Witcher Enhanced Edition &#8212; RPG</strong></p>
<p>(PC) This Atari title&#8217;s beautiful visuals and compelling supernatural story will remind you why you love to play computer games. The Enhanced Edition builds in an already good game, making it a great game.</p>
<p><strong>9. N+ &#8212; Platformer</strong></p>
<p>(DS, PSP) Atari had <a href="/the-magazine/technology/2008/07/e3-2008-atari-steps-up-to-the-plate-swings-and-scores-big/">a hell of a year</a>. N+ is a sickly addictive, graphically simple platformer where you do what good platforming good guys do &#8212; jump around and collect gold. </p>
<p><strong>8. Resistance 2 &#8212; Action</strong></p>
<p>(PlayStation 3) This might be the best multiplayer game on the list, with as many as 60 players getting together online and shooting the bejesus out of anything that moves. There is also a gripping alternate history storyline.</p>
<p>Resistance 2 also boasts the best trailer.</p>

<p><strong>7. Dead Space &#8212; Action</strong></p>
<p>(PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC) Electronic Arts stepped way out of its comfort zone of sports games and The Sims to put together a haunting sci-fi action game that will suck you in until you&#8217;re completely addicted.</p>
<p>Bottom line: EA&#8217;s <a href="/the-magazine/technology/2008/07/ea-steps-out-of-their-comfort-zone/">balls dropped</a> this year, and they put out some sick games that are better than 18 or the last 19 Maddens.</p>
<p><strong>6. Guitar Hero: World Tour &#8212; Music</strong></p>
<p>(PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii) This is comparable to the first Rock Band, with players jamming on drums, guitars, and a microphone. There&#8217;s one important difference, though: With Guitar Hero: World Tour, you can compose your own songs.</p>
<p>Activision finally made a music game that&#8217;s as good as Rock Band, a year later. The jury is still out on the studio mode. I&#8217;m just waiting for them to put out a Rammstein track pack so I can relive high school.</p>
<p><strong>5. LittleBigPlanet &#8212; Platformer</strong></p>
<p>(PlayStation 3, PSP) Users create downloadable content for this game, in which you guide players called Sackboys through a variety of levels and tasks.</p>
<p>Xbox 360 may be killing PS3 in sales again, but PlayStation has the most best games.</p>
<p><strong>4. Fable II &#8212; RPG</strong></p>
<p>(Xbox 360) This cerebral game starts with a magic box that grants wishes to your character &#8211; who begins as a poverty-stricken orphan and grows up to be whoever you want him to be &#8211; good or evil, even straight or gay.</p>
<p>Ok, here&#8217;s where I swallow hard, because we&#8217;re at #3 and it&#8217;s an Xbox exclusive. Fable II is also one of our <a href="/the-magazine/technology/2008/11/fable-ii-review/">highest rated</a> games.</p>
<p><strong>3. Rock Band 2 &#8212; Music</strong></p>
<p>(PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, Wii) It looks, feels, and plays a lot like the original Rock Band, the four-player phenomenon with guitar, bass, drum, and microphone. But Rock Band 2 has more than 80 new songs and plenty more available to purchase, plus an 18-song <a href="/the-magazine/technology/2008/11/yes-we-do-like-the-acdc-live-rock-band-track-pack/">AC/DC concert</a> you can buy or download.</p>
<p><strong>2. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots &#8212; Action</strong></p>
<p>(PlayStation 3) The only argument I might find here is that it&#8217;s not #1, which GameSpot may insist on. They gave it a perfect 10/10.</p>
<p><strong>1. Fallout 3 &#8212; Action/RPG</strong></p>
<p>As <a href="/the-magazine/technology/2008/10/fallout-3/">my review</a> said, not only is Fallout 3 the best game o f the year, but itâ€™s one of the best games ever made. Blast&#8217;s Best Game of E3 is also Blast&#8217;s Best Game of 2008. Fallout 3 is the best game of 2008, and may not be beat for a long time.</p>
<p><strong>Aftermath</strong></p>
<p>Missing Wii-only games? Yeah. We are. And it&#8217;s not just because <a href="http://prrag.com/2006/06/06/wiire-gonna-fail/">I said Wii would fail back in 2006</a>. You can make the case for Mario Kart, and you can argue Brawl into the mix, but 2008 was a disaster for the Wii. Nintendo also did a <a href="/the-magazine/technology/2008/07/oh-no-nintendo-fails-to-deliver/">belly flop at E3</a>, and we were there to see it. Funny thing is that 2007 was huge for Wii, 2008 was a write-off, and 2009 might be another huge year if the Motion Plus takes off, and I do like the Motion Plus.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Monday we <a href="http://blastmagazine.com/the-magazine/technology/2008/11/whats-up-with-rock-band-2-ps3-guitars/">reported</a> that Guitar Hero guitars worked in Rock Band 2 and that the Nyko FrontMan Guitar now needed to be set to &#8220;Guitar Hero&#8221; mode in order to work in Rock Band 2 &#8212; and indeed it does not work at all in &#8220;Rock Band&#8221; mode set on the guitar&#8217;s receiver.s</p>
<p>We brought this to the attention of Nyko, and upon further investigation, they found that a recent PS3 firmware update is causing the FrontMan input mechanism to change. When playing Rock Band II on the PS3 with firmware version 2.52, setting the FrontMan dongle to â€œRock Bandâ€ causes the guitar to not work with the game. Versions prior to this firmware work just fine, as does Rock Band I.</p>
<p><strong>Full statement from Nyko:</strong></p>
<p><em>It has come to our attention that a recent firmware update for the PlayStation3, version 2.52, has caused some changes to the input mechanism of the Nyko Technologies FrontMan guitar. </p>
<p>The FrontMan guitar was introduced to retailers on April 2, 2008, as a quality alternative to the first-party models, with additional features including the interchangeable pick guards, a unique design, and wireless connectivity facilitated by a dongle in the form of an effects pedal. Since the PS3 firmware version 2.52, introduced on November 5, 2008, we began receiving reports of complications using the FrontMan with Rock Band II. Upon further investigation, we found that the latest firmware may be causing the input mechanism of the FrontMan guitar to malfunction, and a simple fix has been introduced involving the wireless dongle to be switched to â€œGuitar Heroâ€ while playing Rock Band II, completely resolving the issue. It should be noted that Rock Band I is not affected, nor will firmware versions prior to v2.52 cause this issue. </p>
<p>Nyko Technologies is committed to improving the gaming experience with the best quality peripherals available on the market, combined with unique value-add features that cannot be found on any other product at the time of launch. We regret that the latest firmware may cause some trouble to Rock Band II players using the FrontMan, but we fully acknowledge this issue and provide the simple afore-mentioned solution. <p>We witnessed a revitalized Atari, a ballsy Electronic Arts and the peak of the music game fad.</p>

<p>Bethesda built a winner from scratch with an amazing looking Fallout 3. Blast played this game, Blast loved this game. You won&#8217;t see a more visually and audibly appealing video game this year. This game is a massive project for any developer, but Bethesda, who saw huge success with “The Elder Scrolls” role playing game series, seems poised to release a game of the year candidate in the fall.</p>

<p>Comic book legend Jim Lee was the Executive Creative Director of the game and created the visual world DC Universe would be set in based on art from the entire history of DC comics. You get to team up with or fight against Superman and Batman. How cool is that?</p>

<p>Within 18 days of the release of Spore Creature Creator, there were over 1.7 million “Spores” created. That’s more than the 1.589 million actual species known to exist on earth, Will Wright pointed out at the EA press conference Tuesday. And that says something about the anticipated impact “Spore” will have when it’s released in September.</p>

With big releases like Rock Band 2 and Wii Music, and smaller debuts like <strong>Lips</strong> and <strong>Ultimate Band</strong>, the stage is set for every single class of gamer imaginable.</p>
<p>Harmonix&#8217;s <strong>Rock Band 2</strong> was by far the most powerful music gaming release of the convention. It will release on all four major consoles this fall.</p>

<p>All old Rock Band songs are compatible with the new installment, said Alex Rigopulos, president of Harmonix, at Microsoft&#8217;s press conference. While there are 84 songs on the Rock Band 2 disc, over 500 songs will be available for play.</p>
<p>Almost all the Rock Band CD songs can be imported into Rock Band 2 automatically, which means no disc swapping, said Rigopulos.</p>
<p>Some major additions have been made to the Rock Band library. A brand new track from Guns N&#8217; Roses will be added to the collection courtesy of Axle Rose. For the first time, Bob Dylan has licensed his songs to a music video game; in Rock Band&#8217;s case, his hit song Tangled Up In Blue. AC/DC will also be exclusively on Rock Band 2.</p>
<p>Twenty bonus tracks will be downloadable in the fall before the release of Rock Band 2.</p>
<p>While Activision withdrew from E3 before the convention, some new information was also released by Microsoft about <strong>Guitar Hero: World Tour</strong>.</p>
<p>The Guitar Hero franchise has sold more than 5 million copies on the Xbox 360, said Kai Huang, president and founder of Red Octane.</p>
<p>The new game features a new wireless drum kit complete with cymbals and a touch slide guitar. The game has more than 85 songs on the disc, though there will be many more available at the launch of World Tour and beyond.</p>
<p>In addition to new instruments, the game features new modes like an online band career and 8-player battle of the bands.</p>
