Fans camped out in NYC for hours just to get a glimpse of Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon. Rob and Reese talked to us about the love they have for their fans as well as for their animal co-stars during the New York Premiere.

The film which hit theaters on April 22, is based on Sara Gruen’s novel of the same name and is directed by Francis Lawrence. The film tells the story of Jacob Jankowski (Robert Pattinson), a veterinary student, who abandons his studies after his parents are killed and joins a traveling circus as their vet. While traveling with the circus, he falls for Marlena, (Reese Witherspoon) an equestrian star married to August (Christoph Waltz), the cruel head animal trainer. Jacob also meets Rosie, an untrainable elephant and the only hope for this third-rate traveling show. The film tells the tale of forbidden love, passion, tragedy, joy, betrayal and aging. Some critic have compared the feel of the film to 1997′s Titanic.

NEW YORK — While “Water for Elephants” will be released everywhere on April 22, the highly anticipated film’s stars, including Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon, showed up at the movie’s premiere Sunday in New York City this weekend

Witherspoon recently told the Los Angels Times about shooting with circus animals for the film, “I have anxiety. I get nervous, and I shake,” and she further explained that the night before shooting with the elephant, “I didn’t sleep, and I literally shook and shook and shook. … But the performances with the elephant were really magical for me. Against my better instincts I decided to ride the elephant with no harness, with no safety equipment. It was pretty great.”

Winning Best Actress might mean a divorce

Actress Sandra Bullock and then-husband Jesse James divorced after Bullock's Best Actress win at the 2010 Academy Awards (Media Credit/Jordan Strauss, WireImage)

The 2011 Oscars are just around the corner, and the ever-buzzed about “Oscar curse,” which proposes that women who win Best Actress at the Oscars are more likely to get divorced than their nominated counterparts, was recently put to the test by a case study conducted at the University of Toronto.

Amy Lee’s article for the Huffington Post entitled “’Oscar Curse’ Study: Researcher Weighs In” gives us a behind-the-scenes glimpse into some of the study’s findings. The study boasts the intriguing conclusion that Oscar-winning women are indeed more likely to get divorced than Oscar-nominated women. In fact, women who win Best Actress have a 63 percent chance of having a shorter marriage than the non-winning nominees. What’s more, the Oscar “curse” does not apply to men who win Best Actor.

The results of the study draw a link between Oscar “cursed” women and those living in the real world. The study’s results suggest that it is not just Best Actress winners who are fated to divorce, but that marriages of successful women across the board are more likely to go stale than those of lesser achievers. What is perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this study, however, is not its statistical findings, but the very ground in which it is rooted: the so-called “social norm.”

The Huffington Post interviewed one of the University of Toronto’s researchers, Tiziana Casciaro, and asked her why she thought that a Best Actress win affected women negatively but not men who won Best Actor. Casciaro said that there are “Multiple possibilities. One has to do with the general social norm that kind of requires a man to have higher professional and economic status over the wife. So whenever that social norm is violated, both husband and wife may feel discomfort – could be either one of them.” She suggests that any imbalance of this accepted norm can cause disruption in a marriage that is grounded in these social roles. It goes without saying, however, that not every man and every woman strive to fulfill these gendered roles, and not every relationship is based on a man who brings home the bacon and a woman who “knows her place” in the home.

It seems as though we have started to look at this particular norm as something to be expected, something that we can accept as a standard baseline. With this thinking, if a man is successful in his profession, he can look forward to greater successes in many other aspects of his private life. If a woman is successful in her professional life, she, too, has a number of things to look forward to: a lot of money, loads of success…and the fear of divorce.

But this study’s conclusion also raises questions: Does the same “curse” apply to women in relationships in which they were the breadwinners from the get go? Furthermore, in what way might this “curse” apply to gay couples, both in Hollywood and in the real world? These questions cannot yet be answered, but with the Oscars around the corner, on Feb. 27, we soon may find out the answer to the following: Will the notorious “curse” strike again this year, as it has stricken Halle Berry, Reese Witherspoon, Kate Winslet, Hilary Swank and Sandra Bullock in the past?

They say never judge a book by its cover, but there’s something about the title “Monsters vs. Aliens” that brought to mind a mediocre children’s movie with crude fart jokes and lots of epic clashes between monsters and aliens. DreamWorks’s latest animated feature film did not disappoint me.

Once again, DreamWorks sacrificed creating a quality script for putting together an all-star cast. Using the voice talents of Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Kiefer Sutherland, Rainn Wilson and Stephen Colbert (oh, and Paul Rudd, Jeffrey Tambor, Amy Poehler, Renee Zellweger and John Krasinksi), this would have been the crƒ¨me de la crƒ¨me of live action movies. But even Seth Rogen’s token stoner laugh was not enough to save a film that was all glitz but no substance.

Directed by: Rob Letterman and Conrad Murphy
Written by: Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky
Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Hugh Laurie, Rainn Wilson
Rating: PG
Run time: 94 minutes
Seen at: Jordan’s Furniture Reading IMAX in 3D

The film follows Susan Murphy (Reese Witherspoon), an unfortunate woman who gets hit by a meteorite on her wedding day and promptly grows ginormous – hence the US Government dubbing her Ginormica. Thus she is locked away in a secret government facility with other “monsters”: B.O.B. (Seth Rogen), a genetically altered tomato gone wrong; Dr. Cockroach Ph.D (Hugh Laurie), a mad scientist who decided to clone himself after the world’s most durable creature; and The Missing Link (Will Arnett), a monster who just likes to terrify the ladies. Then there’s Insectasaurus who I will let you discover for yourself.

Susan is heartbroken after the US Government tell her she will be locked away from her fiancĩ (Paul Rudd) and family forever. That is, until General W. R. Monger (Kiefer Sutherland) realizes the best way to battle their new alien threat (Rainn Wilson) is with the monsters they have been containing. Thus, like its title so subtly suggests, the most is about the monsters versus the aliens.

Writers Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky seemed like they were trying to find a happy medium between child and adult humor but instead alienated both. Themes like Susan’s fiancƒ© only wanting to marry Susan so she could live in his shadow and jokes about global warming seemed too mature for a children’s animated movie, but the “adult humor” never was quite as funny as previous DreamWorks films “Shrek” and “Kung Fu Panda.”

Rogen was the stand-out voice actor of the bunch, though maybe that’s because his voice is funny unto itself. B.O.B. is like a monster version of Brick (Steve Carrell) in “Anchorman,” with some of the jokes (not knowing what his name is) being taken straight from that character. Brick was funny though, and B.O.B. is too. It’s some of the best humor in the movie, even if it’s not original.

Visually, “Monsters vs. Aliens” looked great. While no other animation studio has been able to master the depth of detail and realism that makes Pixar the master of the craft, DreamWorks has come leaps and bounds from “Shrek.”

It also was my first time experiencing a film in 3D, which I had the good fortune to do at the IMAX Theater at Jordan’s Furniture’s Reading location. I wouldn’t recommend seeing it any other way. Even though some of the shots were created solely to look cool in 3D, they did, and that made watching the film somewhat more bearable.

“Monsters vs. Aliens” is the only new animated film out in theaters after last month’s “Coraline.” Go take the kids to see it – they will love B.O.B. (Seth Rogen being family friendly and a kid favorite? Will wonders never cease?). But go in expecting something to keep you entertained for two hours, not something worthy of its cast or that’s going to leave a lasting impact.

Farcical, over the top, and totally implausible, a stellar cast somehow manages to turn a recipe for a forgettable holiday movie into an endearing foray into the joys and fears of a manic yet lovable couple – and the crazy families they try desperately to avoid at all costs. If you’re looking for an enlightening Christmas movie that will teach you a lesson about the strength of the human spirit and provide a good dose of meaning for the kids – watch “Marley & Me.” If you’re looking to buy yourself some (overpriced) laughs delivered by some great actors, then hop on the “Four Christmases” bandwagon.

Directed by: Seth Gordon

Written by: Matt Allen and Caleb Wilson

Starring: Vince Vaughn, Reese Witherspoon.

Seen at: AMC Loews Cinema Boston Common

Running time: 88 minutes

Rated: PG-13

The thought of Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn may seem like a head-scratcher, but despite the counterintuitive casting, Vaughn and Witherspoon have surprising chemistry – so much so, that they have succeeded in making a mediocre concept, and implausible scenarios, adorably compelling, securing “Four Christmases”‘ spot at the top of the box office charts for the second week in a row. While merry movie-goers may flock to see Vince and Reese’s top notch takes as Brad and Kate — a couple so damaged by their own childhoods that they dread trading more than a sentence with their own parents — the megawatt stars’ flawless performances can’t entirely keep the sagging storyline afloat.

The concept – two happily unmarried lovers force themselves to get over their fears by facing their four divorced parents and destructive siblings on the same day – is a promising one, which lands a lot of spot-on punches. But a series of nonsensical incidents seem blatantly intended to appeal to the most base of amusement standards, focusing solely on illiciting cheap laughs rather than more deeply exploring the characters of Brad and Kate, two genuinely interesting people.

Vaughn’s trademark fast-talking, high-energy brand of acting works; he is still playing Vince Vaughn-as-Vince Vaughn, but in this case minus the testosterone-induced beer chugging and Xbox-playing (Brad is a successful lawyer who leaves the immaturity to his aging yet juvenile brothers). He complement’s Witherspoon’s no-nonsense, goal-oriented woman’s woman as they struggle hand-in-hand to survive a cancelled trip to Fiji resulting in the first family Christmas either of them has spent with their relatives in years.

Vaughn and Witherspoon hit all the right notes as Kate and Brad, an eerily perfect couple. They perfectly complement each other in every way. They do literally everything together, from nights in playing Scrabble, to dance classes “just for fun” (to the disbelief of the married couples in their class). They agree on virtually everything – that holidays are better spent isolated in tropical locales than attempting to have civilized interaction with their in-laws, that marriage is an institution that only forces people to stay together, and that the concept of having kids is totally off the table (they wouldn’t want to propagate the horror and destruction imposed by their own cheating, lying parents). We learn it takes a lot to be such a perfect couple though, including a fanatic resolve on both Brad and Kate’s part to be as polar opposite of their own parents as possible – meaning no talk of marriage, no thought of having children, and absolutely no visiting the family over the holidays.

When Kate and Brad, packed to head out for Fiji on Christmas morning, are featured on the local news as victims of a blanket flight cancellation, they know the ruse is up – their parents know they’re in town and they have no choice but to visit his mom, her dad, his dad, and her mom – all in the same day. With “mistletoe” as their agreed-upon safety word in case the action gets a little too maniacal, Kate and Brad pack up their SUV and brave the holidays with Brad’s Confederate flag-waving dad and brothers, Kate’s man-hunting minx mother and her cougar friends, and Brad’s free-love, hippie mother who’s now dating his ex-best friend.
