The 11th season of American Idol premiered on Wednesday, this time from Savannah, Ga. Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson reappeared as judges.

The premiere drew in 21.6 million viewers, topping the amount of young adult viewers combined for ABC, CBS and NBC. Still, the number is lower than last year’s 26.3 million viewers.

Almost immediately, Tyler made the set uncomfortable, as he commended the 15-year-old daughter of Joe Magrane, pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, comparing her to Boston summers: “hot, humid and happening.”

Still, Ryan Seacrest referred to the premiere as “one of the best starts we’ve ever had.” A total of 42 performers received approval and moved on to Hollywood.

Next week the show will air from Pittsburgh.

ABC announced it was canceling “Ugly Better” after its springtime run, citing low ratings.

The show will have its 20-episode season cut short. In a statement, ABC Entertainment chairman Steve McPherson said “We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”

MTV has to premieres tonight “Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew” starts at 10 and “Take the Stage” is at 11. The network’s season one finale of “Teen Mom” on Tuesday earned 3.6 million total viewers.

The CW continues to prove its trying to be like USA Network circa 1989. CW picked up the pilot for “Nikita” a new look at the old sexy spy film/series “La Femme Nikita.”

A few more dramas in the works…

ABC approved an untitled crime drama pilot from writer Richard Hatem and director Gary Fleder, according to THR. The show matches a sexy female detective who works with a disgraced ex-cop to solve crimes.

NBC has a new 60-minute drama pilot in the works called “Justice” about a former Supreme Court justice who quits the high court to start his own practice.

It’s no secret Ryan Seacrest was recently offered $45 million in a three-year contract to continue hosting “American Idol.” Randy Jackson has signed on until at least 2011 and Simon Cowell is currently in negotiations for a new contract. Even Kara DioGuardi wants to come back, and auditions for the ninth season of the hit show are already underway.

Notorious softy Paula Abdul, however, will more than likely be absent from the judge’s table. The New York Daily News reported today that Paula has yet to be offered a new contract.

“She’s not a happy camper as a result of what’s going on,” said Paula’s manager, David Sonenberg. “I find it kind of unconscionable and certainly rude and disrespectful that they haven’t stepped up and said what they want to do.”

As showbiz often goes, the drama is high school-worthy – ignoring the weird girl until she just goes away. So, not surprisingly, Sonenberg said Paula probably won’t be an “Idol” judge next season.

And in even less of a surprise, Paula is tweeting her feelings: “I’m actually moved 2 tears upon reading the enormous amount of tweets showing me your kindness, love, & undying support. God bless all of you! If it weren’t for you, this specific time and situation would feel a whole lot worse!”
