The pilot of a post-World War II aircraft died Saturday after a fiery runway crash at a West Virginia air show.

The crash came the day after a stunt pilot crashed his older-model plane at a Nevada air show on Friday, killing nine people.

In this most recent crash, the West Virginia Air National Guard said no spectators were injured on the ground. Only the pilot was killed.

The plan was part of the T-28 Warbird Aerobatic Formation Demonstration Team, known as the Trojan Horsemen. The group performs at air shows around the country.

“We were fortunate that the safety measures put in place by the Federal Aviation Administration ensured the safety of those on the ground,” Maj. Gen. James Hoyer, adjutant general of the West Virginia National Guard, said in a statement. “Right now our thoughts and prayers are with the family members of the deceased.”

Officials have not released the pilot’s name. The North American Aviation-built T-28 Trojan plane date back to 1949 test flights. Nearly 2,000 were built in the 1950s. It is a single-engine propeller training craft.

The Associated Press reported that the plane was built in 1958 and was owned by John Mangan of Concord, N.C.

According to the Journal of Martinsburg, the crashed T-28 was part of a six-plane formation. It lost control and crashed near a group of hangers as thousands of onlookers cried and prayed.

State Police continued Monday investigating the fatal plane crash in the Western Massachusetts town of Leverett.

“The single-engine Cessna Model U206G bearing tail number #N9742Z lost engine power and was descending toward an open field when it hit a power line and subsequently crashed into the field at approximately 3:30 p.m.,” State Police spokesman David Procopio said in a statement.

The plane originated in Keene, N.H. and was headed for Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, N.Y. when it crashed.

Killed was Robert E. Lothrop, 62, of Stony Brook, N.Y., who was a passenger. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three people survived the crash: William Scheley, of Miller Place, N.Y., Dayna Dicamillo, of Stoddard, N.H. and the pilot, Matthew Wilding, of Stony Brook, N.Y. The survivors were taken by medical helicopter to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

It is also believed that a dog was on board. The dog could not be located at the scene, Procopio said.

State and federal authorities will hold a press conference on Tuesday, where further details are expected to be released.

A plane with 48 people on board crashed into a house near Buffalo, New York and burst into flames late on Thursday. The Federal Aviation Administration said there were no survivors on the plane.

Local emergency officials said earlier there were multiple fatalities. CNN said one person was killed on the ground.‚ The 74-seat Bombardier Q400, a turboprop plane, was a Continental Express flight operated by Colgan Air, flying from Newark to Buffalo. It crashed in the Buffalo suburb of Clarence Centre amid rain and sleet, local officials said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said there were 44 passengers and four crew on the plane and it crashed 6 miles (10 km) short of the airport.‚ The exact cause of the crash is now under investigation. Yahoo News reports that‚ Beverly Eckert, a‚ Sept. 11 widow who, “put her never-ending grief to good use to make the country safer” died on the crash.‚ Eckert was flying to Buffalo Thursday night to celebrate what would have been her husband, Sean Rooney’s, 58th birthday. This is‚ the nation’s first deadly crash of a commercial airliner in two and a-half years.

NEW YORK — An Airbus A320 flight en route from LaGuardia to Charlotte, N.C., went down in an emergency landing in the Hudson River, apparently after striking a flock of birds that disabled the plane’s engines, according to authorities.

US Airways Flight 1549 had 146 passengers on board and 5 crew members. Amazingly, no deaths or serious injuries were reported. The most serious injury appears to be broken legs on one passenger.

The plane took off from LaGuardia at 3:11 p.m. Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown said the flight had just taken off when the crash occurred in the river near 48th Street in Midtown.

The city’s police and fire departments along with the Coast Guard responded to pull scared passengers from the wreck, some of whom were standing on the wings of the plane. Ferries around the plane were also dropping life jackets for people in the water.

A South Carolina Leerjet crash has killed four and left former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and Adam Michael Goldstein (DJ AM) in critical condition at an area hospital burn unit.

The plane never made it off the ground for takeoff. Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen told reporters that the plane carrying was departing before midnight Friday when air traffic controllers reported seeing sparks. The plane careened off the runway and crashed on a roadway.

The pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills, CA co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsbad, CA, Chris Baker, 29, of Studio City, CA, and Charles Still, 25, of Los Angeles, CA died in the crash.

Barker and Goldstein were in South Carolina for a concert. Officials said that Gavin DeGraw and Parrey Farrell, who preformed at the same concert, were not on the plane.

An eyewitness told local NBC affiliate WIS-10 that the two survivors could be seen running around, on fire, trying to extinguish themselves.

DJ AM is from Los Angeles and is best known for his engagement to Nicole Ritchie. He performed with Barker recently at the MTV Video Music Awards.
