Dance artist on the rise

NEW YORK — Local singer Talia Coles just released her new video “Never See You Again” on May 9. The up-tempo sexy dance tune was originally written by Coles, and produced by Teetimus. With her emotional lyrics and hot dance music, the single successfully stayed on Billboard’s Top 25 Dance/Club Play for nine straight weeks.

Coles is also known as a songwriter, stylist and designer. She styled videos for Trey Songz and P. Diddy, and wrote songs for Slim from 112, Musiq Soulchild and Tyler Perry. In addition, she has her own record label, Couture Music, and her own clothing line, Cisum Couture. As her phenomenal talent has been evolving in the entertainment industry, Blast asked Coles some quick questions to get to know her more.

BLAST: Where is dance music right now? Where is it going?

TALIA COLES: Dance music is going be around forever. People always want to feel good. It does something to your body and makes you feel untouchable. It goes hand and hand with fashion and the runway. But I feel like a dance record doesn’t define an artist, a lot of times you may know the song but not have a clue who the artist is. So it’s important to me not to get trapped in just dance music, I want to share the full spectrum of my music. So the consumer can go on a journey with me with a point of view.

BLAST: Where do you live?

TC: I currently live in New Jersey but I was born and raised in Harlem World.

BLAST: What do you do when you are not making music or clothing?

TC: When I’m not working, I spend time with my family. I rock out with my mom. I eat a lot a food and fried Twinkies…(Laughs). My secret nickname is Shallow Hal. But once the guilt settles in, I go work out like a maniac with my trainer Giant of the Bartendaz.

BLAST: Who would you like to work with?

TC: I’d love to work with Michael Jackson and John Lennon when I get to Heaven! But in this lifetime, my list might be too long. To name a few, Paul McCartney, Aerosmith, Prince, Madonna, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Beyonce, Frank Ocean! Boy I can keep going (laughs).

BLAST: What’s your style when performing live?

TC: My performance style most of the time has a theatrical feel. It’s energetic, playful, [and] sensual with personal swag.

Sean “Diddy” Combs guest starred in the 21st episode called “Ho’opa’i” on Hawaii Five-0 as an undercover NYPD detective hunting down an organized crime boss.

His performance was emotional and convincing. He showed attitude and angst and looked more like an actor than a rapper Monday evening.

He channeled a young Wesley Snipes in “U.S. Marshals,” in an episode with as much melodrama as both “Fugitive” movies crammed into one television episode.

The episode had a good plot, as Combs was undercover police officer who has worked to earn the trust of a New York black organized crime boss. The episode opens as a pair of assassins gun down his wife and an FBI agent assigned to protect him. All signs point to the crime boss figuring him out and ordering the hit, but things are not as they seem — of course.

Combs was good, and young up-and-comer Kwesi Boakye, the great-grandson of a Ghana West African king, was amazing, playing Combs frightened-yet-brave young son.

Will the “Diddy effect” propel “Five-0″ in the ratings? Check back on Blast later on for Monday’s ratings.

The six-day wedding party was at a luxury wilderness resort at a Bengal tiger reserve at Ranthambore National Park, in northwestern India. The couple , their family and friends, including P. Diddy, have been seeing the sites in a convoy of open-topped Maruti Suzuki Gypsy King SUVS, the Jeep of India and an auto icon in the area.

Joaquin Phoenix "documentary" fails the test

2 out of 4 stars

Having seen the (so-called) documentary "I’m Still Here," I still don’t know for sure whether Joaquin Phoenix’s abrupt retirement from acting to launch a hip-hop career is a hoax, or if "J.P." is just off-balance, insulated and delusional.

I do know two things: 1. This film was made expressly so we’d continue to contemplate the question, and 2. After sitting through it, I’d be glad to never see Joaquin Phoenix again.

Directed by: Casey Affleck
Written by: Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Sean Combs
Rated: R

The particular Joaquin Phoenix character that this film concerns was first introduced in a 2009 appearance on Late Night with David Letterman. Dressed like a Blues Brother, with black suit and dark shades, he sported the long unkempt hair and bushy beard of a vagrant—a sharp contrast to the chiseled jaw line featured in "Two Lovers," the film he had come, supposedly to promote. Instead of doing so, he announced to Letterman that he was retiring from acting all together, a decision he seemed surprised to have to explain or justify, and that he would be focusing his efforts on a hiphop career.

More surprising than this announcement was his complete lack of a sense of humor about it. Clearly sensitive to the idea that he might be mocked for his efforts, he appeared chilly and withdrawn, chomping on gum, speaking in monosyllabic mumbles and answering all questions about his last film or his future with sneering disdain.

Rumors that this was some sort of hoax, an elaborate publicity stunt, spread through the entertainment press immediately, and peaked when it was learned that Phoenix’s friend and brother-in-law, Casey Affleck was working on a documentary about his shocking career move.

The entirety of "I’m Still Here" thrives on the uncertainty. Like "The Blair Witch Project," "Borat," (the short-lived) "K-Street" and much of reality television, it’s about guessing which parts are real and which are staged, and working out the implications of each contingency.

Phoenix is clearly as complicit as can be in this film, which begins and ends with pointed home movies from his childhood. He is always aware of the camera. The character he creates, or allows to be revealed, is appalling. Expending far more t energy passionately yet incoherently defending his hiphop career than making or practicing songs, he appears paranoid, boorish, overweight and overbearing. Affleck’s lens catches Phoenix abusing his entourage, overindulging in booze, weed and cocaine, ordering prostitutes off of the Internet, brawling with hecklers, vomiting backstage at a gig, and basically failing spectacularly and with naive surprise whenever he is presented with an opportunity for success or redemption.

The film doesn’t have much of an arch; It’s a pretty much a flat line of ugly flailing. The only thing keeping it alive is the ever-present questions: if this is real, how did it happen? Why would Phoenix allow himself to be shown in such an unsympathetic light? How can Affleck dare to profit off it? If it’s fake, what could be the point? Who is the joke supposed to be on? Where could Phoenix imagine himself going next?

No matter how these questions are answered, the problem with the film is that it fails the test of any piece of post-modern, conceptual art: is it still compelling without the artist’s statement? Is it as worth looking at as it is considering?

VH1 has some reality stuff on

Tonight, VH1 premieres two more reality shows: “For the Love of Ray J” at 9 p.m. and “I Want to Work for Diddy” at 10. ABC Family has the season finale of “Greek” at 9 tonight.

There’s a decent amount of news on this Monday. FOX gave a full sixth season order to the animated hit “American Dad” about a CIA agent voiced by Seth MacFarlane, who also created “Family Guy.” The show airs at 9:30 p.m. on Sundays.

Discovery will order a second season of “Swords Life on the Line” about the lives of New England fishermen. Discovery Channel also approved a series called “Airplane Repo” about a team that repossesses jets and helicopters from owners who defaulted on the loans. This will start early next year.

Writer Josh Heald, who has films “Hot Tub Time Machine” and “Mardi Gras” slated for release next year, also has a few TV projects in the works. “Sausagefest,” will be a comedy on NBC about two 20-something best friends with totally different fathers — one of which will be played by Norm Macdonald. The second show will be a FOX comedy called “Sequestered,” about 12 strangers who have to live together during a long jury trial. The show will mainly focus on their time outside the courtroom where they are allowed to talk about anything except the ongoing trial.

World Series big game tonight, so ABC has “Dancing with the Stars,” FOX eventually has “So You Think You Can Dance,” and NBC has the defunct “Trauma,” What a night. Even Bostonians will be watching baseball.
