David defeated Goliath, but he couldn't handle a thief with a crane.

David defeated Goliath, but he couldn’t handle a thief with a crane.

A two-tonne bronze statue of King David was stolen from a stoneworking shop in Copenhagen, Denmark. The statue was being repaired because of damage incurred when a car ran into it in June.

The three-meter tall statue usually stands outside Our Lady’s Church in Copenhagen.

The statue was supposed to be returned on Monday, but when one of the stoneworkers in the shop noticed it was missing, he reported it.

“At first we thought it was a joke. Someone must have used a big truck and crane to get away with it,” said cathedral dean Anders Gadegaard.

The major concern is that the bronze could be melted and sold, which would effectively ruin the legendary 168-year-old statue.
