New Hampshire authorities today revealed startling evidence against the girlfriend of a drug suspect, at first painted as an innocent victim in a horrific scene that rocked New England earlier this month.

The April 12 drug raid on the home of Cullen Mutrie, 29, left Greenland, N.H. Police Chief Michael Maloney dead and four other police officers shot. Mutrie, reportedly shot and killed his reputed girlfriend, Brittany Tibbetts, 26, before turning the gun on himself.

Legal documents indicated Mutrie was the target of the drug investigation, but police were also seeking to search Tibbetts, who they believed was also involved in the sale of drugs in the otherwise sleepy New Hampshire town. Police, through a confidential source, believed Mutrie and Tibbetts were selling about 500 oxycodone pills every few days out of the house, and Mutrie had also been linked to illegal steroids.

And today, New Hampshire Attorney General Michael A. Delaney revealed that a Ruger .357 revolver recovered from the crime scene was actually purchased by Tibbetts, at a January gun show in Manchester, N.H.

A 9 mm pistol was also recovered, but police have not yet determined its origin.

Police already believed Mutrie was armed before the ill-fated raid.

With the 2012 election season approaching fast and the majority of election news covering the GOP hopefuls, a major blow was struck to Minnesota Representative Michele Bachmann’s nomination hopes as her entire New Hampshire staff resigned today.

According to the Global Post, the five-person team, including right wing radio personality Jeff Chidester who had called himself a “longtime friend” of Bachmann, all resigned at once in protest of the lack of attention New Hampshire was receiving from the campaign.

While there has been no official statement made by the team, it has been reported that Southern New Hampshire field director Caroline Gilger will be joining Texas Governor Rick Perry’s effort.

With the New Hampshire primary election poised to happen on January 24, this is the most recent hit to Bachmann’s bid for the nomination, which began strong with the winning of the Iowa Straw poll in August, but has dwindled down to a fourth place standing ever since.

St. Joseph cited cuts to Medicaid reimbursement in the tighter stat budget that went into effect last month as the reason for the closure.

An 11-year-old girl who went missing from her home in rural New Hampshire last week and has yet to be found, despite an extensive search by authorities and members of the community.

Celina Cass of Stewartstown, N.H. was last seen on Monday night at her computer in her home.

Cass is described as a tall, thin girl who loves basketball, hanging out with friends and being with her family. She is 5 ft 5 inches and weighs 95 pounds. She has hazel eyes and waist length brown hair.

Authorities have not speculated as to what happened to her, but have intensified their search tactics and adding forces. Police from New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts, as well as the FBI, the US Border Patrol and the Fish and Game Department are combing surrounding areas, including Canada, for the young girl.

New Hampshire Fish and Game officials lowered water levels in the Connecticut River to look for the girl and a portable cellphone tower was installed in Stewartstown for increased communication. Divers searched a local pond today, but came up with no evidence.

The FBI has placed a $25,000 reward for information about Cass’ whereabouts, according to FBI agent Kieran Ramsey. An anonymous donor offered an additional $5,000 reward.

“We are looking at those tips, and we are honing the investigation through those tips,’’ said Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young, according to the Boston Globe.

Stewartstown is a small, close-knit community, and the residents are shocked and scared by Cass’ disappearance.

Family and friends are actively involved in the search, and have formed supportive Facebook groups for Cass, urging prayer and thoughts for the young girl.

Massachusetts State Police took a Texas woman into custody on Wednesday at a highway rest stop in Chelmsford in connection with the death of her son.

Julianne McCrery of Irving, Texas was detained on Interstate 495 southbound and questioned by investigators from Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

She has since been charged with second degree murder.

Her young son, Camden Pierce Hughes, was found dead on a secluded road in South Berwick, Maine, on Saturday.

According to police, McCrery killed her son in New Hampshire and dumped the body in Maine.

The cause of the young boy’s death was preliminarily determined to be asphyxiation, according to police.

David Procopio, a Massachusetts State Police spokesman, said McCrery was transported to a local hospital for “medical evaluation” late Wednesday afternoon, and that “a development” in the case had placed it under the jurisdiction of the New Hampshire attorney general’s office.

McCrery was picked up after State Police received a tip from a citizen that at 10:20 a.m. a pickup truck was parked at the Chelmsford rest stop that looked like the vehicle seen near the location where Hughes’ body was dumped, according to Procopio.

The vehicle is being examined at a State Police facility in Danvers.

Spurred by a naval insignia near the license plate of the vehicle, Maine authorities had asked the military to help with the case. International law enforcement agents were also called in, as authorities could not identify the boy for several days.

Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann visited New Hampshire and clutched a teabag during a speech in Nashua, but at an earlier speech in Manchester, she Republican confused one of the basic facts of the Revolutionary War.

“What I love about New Hampshire and what we have in common is our extreme love for liberty,” the potential presidential candidate said. “You’re the state where the shot was heard around the world in Lexington and Concord. And you put a marker in the ground and paid with the blood of your ancestors the very first price that had to be paid to make this the most magnificent nation that has ever arisen in the annals of man in 5,000 years of recorded history.”

Of course, the opening battles of the Revolution were actually fought in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts.

The gaffe is likely to go down as one of the larger blunders of the upcoming 2012 presidential primary season.

The remark also illustrates a lack of basic knowledge of New England geography and of grade school-level American history — the same history that her Tea Party backers drew from in forming the movement.

The story was first reported by RealClearPolitics.

Harold Frey, 46, of Sandown, was finishing an ice rescue training class on the Exeter River just before noon when he collapsed, suffering a heart attack, said Fire Chief Wilfred Tapley.

Tapley said that Frey was a new member of the department, though he was a longtime firefighter.

According to FireFighterCloseCalls.com, which reports on firefighter deaths, Frey had just gotten out of the icy water when he couldn’t catch his breath. Crews on scene were unable to revive him.

Frey’s death is considered a “death in the line of duty.”

Tapley said that members of the Granite State Fire Service Support Team were on hand at the Sandown Fire Department providing assistance to its members.

A Derry, N.H. split-level house was damaged in a Saturday evening fire, but fire officials said that working smoke detectors and quick thinking may have averted real disaster.

Residents were home when the fire broke out, and the homeowner was alerted by the smoke alarm. Residents tried to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher while calling 911.

Firefighters arrived and went to work, conducting an aggressive interior attack to contain the fire to the living room. The fire started in a faulty fireplace.

“Fire investigators suspect the fire was smoldering, undetected, in the wall behind and above the mantle for several hours before breaking out and setting of the smoke detectors,” fire officials said.

The fireplace was badly damaged, as were a few walls and the living room, but the house was saved, and it can be repaired, fire officials said.

No one was hurt. The residents will stay with family until the house is repaired.

“This fire illustrated the importance of operating smoke detectors,” said Battalion Chief Jack Webb. “The Derry Fire Department wants to remind everyone that they should have smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors installed on every level of a home, as well as smoke detectors in every bedroom. Test smoke detectors regularly and replace the batteries whenever you change the clocks. Furthermore, any detector that is over 10 years old should be replaced.”

Three firefighters were injured fighting a 2-alarm house fire in Derry, N.H., Monday evening, authorities said.

The fire broke out in the 2 1/2 story single family home at 12 Eastman Drive and quickly spread, destroying the home.

The homeowners were not home at the time, but two visitors were inside the house when the fire broke out. They were able to escape safely.

Firefighters tried to attack the fire from the inside, hoping to save the house, but they were quickly driven out after a flashover consumed the entire first floor, said Derry Battalion Chief Michael E. Doyle in a statement.

“Crews then went to defensive operations and Command called for a second alarm,” Doyle said.

A family pet died in the fire.

Two firefighters were evaluated at the scene for burns to the head and face and one was taken to an area hospital with difficulty breathing, Doyle said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Doyle said the fire was not suspicious.

Crews from Auburn, Hudson, Londonderry, Manchester, Salem and Windham helped battle the fire. Crews from the Raymond, Hooksett, Danville and Pelham Fire Departments covered Derry during the fire.

The fire occurred in an area without fire hydrants and required tanker trucks from Atkinson, Auburn, Chester, Hampstead, Sandown, and Windham.

Fifteen school buses were destroyed as they sat dormant in a parking lot in Bradford, N.H. early yesterday morning, police said.

The fire began at 4.45 a.m., and it quickly spread among the closely grouped vehicles, police said. Soon 15 buses were gutted and five others were badly damaged.

Emergency responders were able to get inside the Goffstown Truck Center and grab the keys for 10 other buses, moving then to safety before they were consumed, said Bradford Police Officer Ed Shaughnessy.

Shaughnessy said that each bus was worth $70,000. With the partially damaged buses and other damage to the area, Shaughnessy totaled out the damage at $1.5 million.

No injuries were reported.

Shaughnessy said video footage from a bus surveillance camera showed that the fire started in a single bus.

Police said that most of the buses belonged to Kearsarge Regional School District.

The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s office will investigate. Shaughnessy said investigators are looking into foul play as the reason behind the yellow inferno.

“We’re looking into it,” Shaughnessy said. “An investigation is set up for the morning with the State Fire Marshal.”

The blaze drew firefighters from six towns.

“The single-engine Cessna Model U206G bearing tail number #N9742Z lost engine power and was descending toward an open field when it hit a power line and subsequently crashed into the field at approximately 3:30 p.m.,” State Police spokesman David Procopio said in a statement.

The plane originated in Keene, N.H. and was headed for Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, N.Y. when it crashed.

Killed was Robert E. Lothrop, 62, of Stony Brook, N.Y., who was a passenger. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three people survived the crash: William Scheley, of Miller Place, N.Y., Dayna Dicamillo, of Stoddard, N.H. and the pilot, Matthew Wilding, of Stony Brook, N.Y. The survivors were taken by medical helicopter to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

It is also believed that a dog was on board. The dog could not be located at the scene, Procopio said.

An Auburn, N.H. man has been charged with murder after his wife and son were found dead in their home earlier this week.

Christopher Smeltzer, 37, was charged with second-degree murder after police said he killed his wife, Mara Pappalardo, 39 either Sunday or Monday.

Their 4-year-old son, whose name was not released, was also found dead.

Police had been quiet for more than a day after the bodies were found.

Autopsies revealed that Pappalardo died of blunt force trauma to the head and ligature strangulation and that the son was also strangled. Both deaths were ruled homicides.

But Smeltzer was not charged with his son’s death.

Smeltzer and the couple’s 7-year-old daughter, whose name was not released either, were treated at a Manchester hospital yesterday for non-life threatening injuries. Police did not say if they think Smeltzer killed his son, hurt his daughter, and/or hurt himself.

Smeltzer is expected to be arraigned in the Candia District Court tomorrow.

Former New Hampshire Attorney General Kelly Ayotte beat up on Republican Paul Hodes in a vacant Senate seat given up by retiring New Hampshire Sen. Judd Gregg.

Ayotte, a young and conservative Republican endorsed by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, took it to hodes and rode a national roller coaster of Republican victories.

Hodes had tried to sell himself as a “fiscal conservative” during the race, but he was clearly out-matched.

“New Hampshire has sent a clear message to Washington, and that is: No more business as usual. No more spending money we don’t have on programs that don’t work. And no more backroom deals,” Ayotte said during her victory speech.

With two-thirds of precincts reporting, Ayotte lead 61 percent to 36 with two independent candidates also trailing.

“Kelly has proven that she has the courage and determination to shake up Washington,” said Republican State Committee Chairman John H. Sununu. “In the Senate, Kelly will be part of a new generation of Republican leaders who will fight to return fiscal sanity to our government.”

Part of that involves the Democratic Party bringing their big guns to New England.

Two weeks ago President Obama gave an impassioned speech at a rally for Governor Deval Patrick in Boston’s Back Bay. A week ago, he was at a private fundraiser in Providence. Yesterday, Vice-President Biden appeared in Quincy to stump for Congressional hopeful Bill Keating.

Today, former President Bill Clinton was at a rally in Nashua for incumbent gubernatorial candidate John Lynch.

Lynch is a popular guy. He won his last two elections by a good margin and he’s well-ahead in recent polls as he seeks a fourth term in office. But John Stephen, his Republican opponent, has received visits from former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

“We have had a steady parade of prominent, national Republicans come to the state for John Stephen so to have a big-name Democrat for John Lynch is expected,” said Greg Moore, a local GOP spokesperson.

Speaking in a Nashua Community College gymnasium with about 600 people in attendance, Clinton presented some similar talking points as Obama did in Boston two weeks ago. Each presented the economic record of the local incumbent governor as a compelling reason for their re-election. Each pointed to George W. Bush’s two-term administration as the main cause of America’s economic malaise. Neither shied away from making a case not only for the person they were there to support, but for how people should vote in the next presidential election.

Clinton also said a few words on behalf of Ann McLane Kuster who is facing Republican Charlie Bass in a bid for the 2nd Congressional District.

New Hampshire woman turns pregnancy into a body of art

Paola Dias’ pregnancy resulted not only in the beginning of a beautiful new life but also the birth of a successful new business. She and her husband, Mike, moved from Northern California to bucolic New Hampshire recently.

"We live on a farm in a rural area," Dias said. "There aren’t a lot of jobs here, you kind of have to create your own. It’s a place where you just get really imaginative."

When Paola found out she was expecting, opportunity came knocking, organically. With the original goal of tracking the growth and shape of his wife’s belly month-to-month, Mike started tracing her bump against the wall, like parents do with their children to track their height. Both Paola and Mike grew up in creative families; Paola paints and Mike’s mother is an artist. For these two parents-to-be, pencil wasn’t enough.

"Tons" of art supplies made the trek with them across country and so they began to utilize what they had around the house and kept the creative juices flowing. "First of all, we started to make a mess," Paola laughed. But with some Japanese "shumi" ink that they had, what was created was "…so beautiful, it was this graceful outline." They then experimented with ground earth ochres mixed with water, which produced vibrant colors. Calligraphy brushes painted polished lines.

Paola wasn’t particularly fond of the idea of her nude body decorating their home, so baby belly photographs weren’t an option.

"I wanted something I could frame and put in my baby nursery or around the house, something more subtle,” she said. “So we decided to pursue it." The couple realized that the quality of their supplies was directly linked to the beauty in the product, so they ordered paper from Thailand, all-natural ochres, and calligraphy brushes.

Paola and Mike were so thrilled by their results that they decided to design some "kits" for some friends who were also expecting.

"We put them together because we thought we had come up with a great idea." Eventually, people they didn’t even know were asking for kits and the Dias’ realized they had stumbled upon something beautiful, with just a bit of creativity and some household supplies.

Not exactly the next Picasso? Doesn’t make a difference, according to Paola. "It’s really easy," she said. People who have never done it before paint amazingly and each woman expresses her creativity differently. "It was so great to see it with other people; they all have the same reaction, like ‘Oh my gosh, that is my body.’"

Not only does "Art Bellies," the official name of Paola and Mike Dias’ business, give you a tangible and visible memory of your pregnant belly, the physical act of creating the art enables the expectant mother to be more open and at peace with her body.

"When parents find out they are having a baby, everyone rushes out to buy stuff, not many people create,” Dias said. “It’s nice to slow down, be more mindful and love your body. It gets you grounded with your body. That’s something that is really joyful for us to see."

Art Bellies kits have been a success as a baby shower gift and/or game. Dias said women love to help each other create a beautiful outline of their bellies. A lot of parents, after the baby is born, stamp the baby’s footprint on the belly sketch, which makes for a special keepsake. Paola has seen women display the prints in offices, nurseries, and living rooms. They even had some silhouettes on display in the maternity ward of a New Hampshire hospital. One of the OB/GYN doctors loved them so much he took one home for his office.

Paola and Mike Dias are very optimistic about the future. Having started the business during one of the toughest economic times this country has seen in years, they feel fortunate to have created a business from simply doing something they love. They hope to expand Art Bellies as any small business might grow, focusing on the here and now.

They’re currently working on the packaging, making it more retail specific. Each Art Bellies kit comes with one white handmade paper, a color paper of choice that goes with the elements (air, earth, fire, water), all made of recyclable material, as well as the calligraphy brushes and ochres.

Only one year old, this budding business is destined for success. After all, women will always be having babies, right? Paola Dias teaches Spanish part-time and cares for their nine-month-old daughter. Her husband, Mike, is a technical writer. The couple is inspired by the natural art all around them in their small New Hampshire town, and hopes to continue to share their inspiration with parents-to-be around the world.

Art Bellies kits are sold online at their website and also at retailers in the New Hampshire area. They were recently featured in Pregnancy and Newborn magazines.

NASHUA, N.H. — Senator Hillary Clinton took an early lead and held on to defeat Senator Barack Obama.

The Associated press was the first to call the race for Clinton, NBC News followed before CNN around 11 p.m.

Obama was hoping to get a boost from college towns, but in the end he came up short.

Former Senator John Edwards finished a distant and disappointing third with about 17 percent of the vote.

Senator John McCain has won among the Republicans, it is projected. Iowa winner Mike Huckabee looks to finish third ahead of Rudy Giuliani

Turnout has been upwards of 70 percent statewide — over 500,000 votes.

McCain gave his victory speech around 9:30 p.m. local time. No word from Mitt Romney. Senator Obama conceded around 11 p.m.

Though he talked about winning and had the crowd cheering "Mich-i-gan" and "Mac-Is-Back," his enthusiasm giving a prepared speech seemed to be lacking … his crowd didn’t seem to mind though.

As the world looks to New Hampshire, turn to BLAST.

WASHINGTON — In what could become one of the most spectacular front-runner failures in presidential politics, rivaling that of Howard Dean in 2004 and Edward Muskie 1972, Hillary Clinton is now rumored to be considering whether or not to drop out of the election if she suffers a heavy loss in New Hampshire as she did in Iowa.

Senator Clinton is facing double defeats in Iowa and New Hampshire if current polls are indicative of the way the Tuesday night primary election will swing with Senator Barack Obama currently leading the way in New Hampshire with 39 percent to Clinton’s 29 percent in the most recent polls. (CNN, January 5).

Insiders are rumored to be split on the issue with advisers like James Carville who led her husband’s campaigns “urging her to fight it out through at least February and Super Tuesday, where she has a shot at thwarting Barack Obama in a big state” according to the Drudge Report.

“She can’t take multiple double-digit losses in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada,” laments one top campaign insider told the Drudge Report. “If she gets too badly embarrassed, it will really harm her. She doesn’t want the Clinton brand to be damaged with back-to-back-to-back defeats.”

Officially, Senator Clinton’s campaign has indicated that she has no reason whatsoever to drop out after only one loss. But with her national lead eroding, and fundraising numbers down it, will be interesting to watch how her strategy changes to handle her shattered myth of her inevitability. Given her show of emotion at an event in New Hampshire last night, her patriotism and passion finally showing through her thick skin, the speculation of her withdrawal is likely just that…
