Microsoft  today announced that it is ending its programming of first-party content under the Inside Xbox brand. Shows like Major’s Minute, Featured Videos, and Insider Moves will cease production in the US and subsequently be unavailable in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Mexico and Japan will still continue their own first-party content “via other media outside of the Inside Xbox brand.”

“We will be leveraging third-party news and video content available through a variety of existing and future partners,” commented Xbox Live’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, “and supplementing this content with select first-party offerings.”

Inside Xbox may be gone, but not the Major. “Everything else I do is unaffected,” he told Joystiq.

If you’re one of those people who love achievements, get ready – Microsoft announced this morning that the cap for Xbox Live Arcade games will be doubling next month.

“Starting next month (April 2012) all new Xbox LIVE Arcade games will have the option to increase from 200 to 400 Gamerscore points, with the addition of up to 30 Achievements,” Xbox Live’s Major Nelson wrote on his blog. Even better, this Gamerscore increase will be required in all new Xbox LIVE Arcade games starting in June 2012.”

The announcement comes on the heels of a report this morning on Xbox360Achievements.org

The dashboard update that was supposed to be available this morning in North America and bring a number of new Kinect features and apps to the console has been hit with a last minute delay. At 7AM, Xbox Live’s Major Nelson tweeted that “the timing for Xbox 360 dashboard update has been slightly delayed. I’ll have a status update later today.” Later on that day, he sent out another tweet, stating that “We are still working to get the release out. Stay tuned, we’ll have an update this afternoon (PT) on when it will begin rolling out.”

No word has been given on the timeline for the update’s release, we’ll update you when we learn more.

Cliff Bleszinski promised a Gears of War announcement you weren’t expecting at tonight’s Spike TV Video Game Awards — which would be true, unless you were expecting no announcement.

Major Nelson announced via his blog this morning that the announcement won’t be making the show. “I have just learned of a decision to postpone our planned Gears of War news from Epic Games for the Spike Video Game Awards this weekend.  I wanted to share this with you and let you know that while these are never easy decisions, we can tell you that what we have to share for the franchise in 2011 will definitely be worth the wait and we look forward to working with our partner at Spike on sharing this world premier news when it is ready.

While it’s a bummer that we won’t hear about the series, there are still plenty of announcements and reveals expected to happen. Stick with Blast for up to the minute coverage.

The Xbox Live Deal of the Week is Call of Duty 4′s “Variety” map pack.

At 400 MS Points/$5, this map pack, originally released in April of 2008, contains “Killhouse”, “Creek”, “Chinatown”, and “Broadcast,” and was the only digital ware Infinity Ward released for the shooter.

With the Modern Warfare 2 release date looming on the direct horizon, as in 7 days and 11 hours as of press time, I can’t really understand why anyone would buy these now, but I’m just a guy in his room forming sentences on a computer, what do I know?

Two of this Fall’s most anticipated titles hit Xbox Live today in free demo form.

Double Fine’s “Brutal Legend,” and the next installment in the popular racing franchise, “Forza Motorsport 3,” can now be downloaded on Xbox Live, provided of course, you’re a paying Gold Member.

The Brutal Legend demo is just that; brutal. It’ll take up a whopping 2GB of your hard drive space but it takes you through the entire first chapter of the title, so you might want to check it out.

The‚  Forza 3 demo is much lighter. 1GB gets you Microsoft-published racing goodness at sixty frames per second.

Anyone hanging out in the free Xbox Live Silver crowd still? After missing all of this it might be worth the upgrade.

Microsoft released a system update for Xbox 360′s everywhere today in preparation for the super-huge Fall update.

The update brings nothing new to your 360, but lays the groundwork for the impending yearly rehash bringing social avenues Facebook, Twitter, and Last.fm to your Xbox 360.

So when you sign in to Xbox Live today (if you haven’t already), don’t worry, you aren’t getting swindled, only receiving some maintenance for what looks to be a stellar refresher later on this fall.

Bungie’s September 2007 project, Halo 3, is still the most played game on all of Xbox Live.

Major Nelson, Xbox Live community man, revealed last week’s Xbox Live statistics today and like always, the top 4 are first and third-person-shooters.

Halo 3 beat them all out, with COD5 in the 2 spot, COD4 coming in third, and Gears of War 2 at the fourth spot.

Nothing on the list is surprising, at least in my estimation. Hell, I’ve played around 3000 games of Halo 3 in my life.

With Halo 3: ODST due out in less than a week, bundled with the final 3 multiplayer maps, I feel it’s safe to assume Halo 3 will remain atop the list for a while.

Microsoft continues to add to its “Games on Demand” digital download service today with the addition of the award winning underwater FPS BioShock and the epic strategy game Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution.

Both titles will set you back $29.99 and about 5GB of hard drive space, but if you’re sporting a brand new $299 120GB Elite Xbox 360 model, you’ll have no problem fitting them.

With the addition of these two titles, the “Games on Demand” section has some exciting titles among its ranks including Assassin’s Creed, LEGO Star Wars: TCS, Kameo, Battlefield: Bad Company, Mass Effect, Burnout Paradise, The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Need For Speed Pro Street and Carbon, and many more.

For the fifth straight week the 2007 shooter Halo 3 beat out every single other Live enabled Xbox 360 title to claim the number one spot on the Xbox Live activity ladder.

Make of it what you will, but the staying power for the Halo franchise is altogether absurdly powerful and something in the Halo franchise will undoubtedly show up at E3 in just a few short weeks.

Microsoft released Xbox Live activity figures for the week of May 4 today and for the fourth straight week Halo 3 beat everyone out for the top spot.

The top five include Halo 3, Call of Duty 5, Call of Duty 4, Gears of War 2, and the UFC Undisputed demo in that order.

Until the Mythic Map Pack came around back in April, Masterchief and pals were continually hovering in among the top 5, but since then have tore up the charts staking a claim for just how popular the 2007 shooter truly is.

Halo 3 is a damn popular game.‚  How popular you ask?‚  Try over 1 billion match-made games, and recently a nameless UNSC soldier slew the 10 billionth Covenant scumbag in campaign.‚  Bungie, developer of all things Halo (except Halo Wars) knows how to appease the mass of fans suiting up for online combat each and every day.‚  It seems as if new DLC perpetually looms on the horizon, frequent matchmaking playlist tweaks keep the experience fresh, and there is just some indescribable emotion attached to tea-bagging a fresh kill that keeps us coming back for more.

Clearly the thirst for nazi-zombie blood struck home with gamers this week as Call of Duty: World at War toppled Halo 3 for top Xbox Live activity for the first time in a month.

Nothing astonishing this week as the top three multiplayer titles, Halo 3, COD4, and COD:WAW again hold the top spots only shifting slightly in order.

Halo fans need not lament for the falling Master Chief as the influx of World War 2 gamers can most likely be attributed to the release of the hotly anticipated map pack, something Halo-heads will soon be a part of.

Halo 3, the crazy-popular first person shooter from Bungie studios again finds itself atop the list of most played Xbox Live titles.‚  Who cares that the title is nearly two years old, the formula for success Bungie has built and expanded upon is what keeps us coming back.
