The too-cute-to-handle project finally roped in an official release date today.

Sony finally got around to pegging an exact release date and final boxart for LittleBigPlanet PSP this weekend.

According to the PlayStation.Blog, the overly cute project for PSP and PSPgo, will hit retailers and the PSN, November 17 in North America.

Here’s the final boxart for the game. Nothing too special, but creative enough for me to believe MediaMolecule made it!

In other LittleBigPlanet news, Sony unleashed a “Who Sacks the Watchmen?” DLC pack on the PSN for the PlayStation 3 version this week.

We’ll have a review of LittleBigPlanet PSP next month, and stick with us for our continued coverage of the game!

LittleBigPlanet was a runaway hit both monetarily and critically speaking for the PS3, so a portable release on Sony’s proprietary handheld, the PSP, was not simply a likely endeavor, rather an almost assured project.

LittleBigPlanet for PSP is slated for a November 17 release, but for now we’re left the game’s wondrous art, as imaged in these hot and fresh new screens showing multiple levels, color schemes, new outfits, and most interestingly…Jessica Rabbit? Yes, that looks like her in the first screenshot, but correct me if I’m wrong.

As the industry trends towards user-generated content, LBP has thrived.

Sony announced today that the cute and cuddly LittleBigPlanet game from Media Molecule has garnered an unprecedented 1,000,000th user-generated and uploaded level.

Launched in Fall of 2008, LBP was an ambitious and seemingly risky brand new intellectual property. But man, oh man, did the gamble pay off, as LBP quickly earned accolade after accolade for its excellence.

Let’s put that 1 million figure into crazy perspective why don’t we?

If Sony did their math correctly, and they probably did, a unique and new LBP level is uploaded, on average, every 21 seconds.

How many have YOU contributed?

The user-generated, imaginatively unstoppable LittleBigPlanet has a sequel in the works. Details inside.

LittleBigPlanet, an original IP from Media Molecule, is a unique title with simple yet ultimately very deep gameplay components. Emphasis is placed on user-creation and involvement and is the true essence of LBP. The cute and cuddly Sackboys are a wondrous element to the games mechanics in that their childish nature and pure innocence mirrors early 2-d side scrolling games we know and love.

Given the hit success of LBP and it’s soon to be PlayStation Portable version, it comes as no surprise that a full blown PS3 LittleBigPlanet sequel is in the works. Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evans can’t say much but he does so eloquently describe it as “really fucking cool.”

Evans, in an interview with GamaSutra describes the success of LBP and where the sequel may venture to.

“It’s a quite interesting thing because it was like a magnet. Everyone sort of [joined in] on that thing, then I suddenly saw these people kind of going, ‘Oh my god, far from being tired of LBP, I suddenly see this untapped potential,’” he says.

“And in ways that hopefully will still be fresh so when it comes back, people won’t be like, ‘Yeah, they just exploited that thing, and it’s really fucking obvious that they would do that.’ I think LBP is in their future, and hopefully in surprising ways.”

LittleBigPlanet was a hallmark of creativity and imagination and I believe it is a sure thing to assume LBP2 will be everything the original contained times like a freakin’ million.

As far as non-LBP projects are concerned, Media Molecule’s Evans had this to say:

“We started the company and we called it ‘creative gaming’ rather than [that]… As I said in the talk, there’s a very broad church. We can actually pick a different bit of the spectrum.”

“So, it doesn’t have to be LBP-style creativity. It could be musical, or it could be God knows what. I think there’s definitely a fixation at Media Molecule around the idea of engaging players creatively.”

Sony has big plans for its handheld in 2009. Details inside.

Sony has big, no, make that huge plans for 2009 with the PSP. If you’ve felt deprived of gaming goodness on-the-go, this year will renew your faith in the handheld system.

According to Sony Blog ThreeSpeech, today at Sony’s annual Destination Playstation event, LittleBigPlanet, Motorstorm, and Rock Band titles were announced for the PSP for release in 2009.

LittleBigPlanet on the PSP will feature the same creative and unique features found in the PS3 version and deliver them effectively to the portable gamer. No mention of PSP to PS3 functionality at this time, but it must be in the works.

On the racing front, MotorStorm Arctic Edge will feature a brand new location set in the breathtaking yet lethal regions of Alaska. Â Check out the glorious screens in the gallery and the trailer below.

According to Kotaku.com, Rock Band Unplugged will be hitting the PSP featuring Wi-Fi support and a fully-featured in-game store for downloadable content in the North American and Europeans markets. With no Rock Band 3 on the horizon in 2009, Unplugged looks to fill that void and challenge Guitar Hero: On Tour in the handheld market.

Our editor rattles off his top 10 games of 2008, with a few extras. Mario fans may throw their shoes at him.

Recently, I had the chance to write the Boston Globe’s 2008 video game and video game accessories gift guides.

Building off that, here is my list of the top 10 video games of 2008.

11. The Honorable Mentions:

Mega Man IX — Platformer

(PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii) Ladies, want to buy your 20-something man a gift that will make him giggle like an eighth grader? Spend 10 bucks on Mega Man 9, a new take on the hyper-challenging classic video game that requires quick reflexes to battle a horde of evil robots and their sinister master.

AND — Final Fantasy IV for DS, Call of Duty: World at War, de Blob for Wii

10. The Witcher Enhanced Edition — RPG

(PC) This Atari title’s beautiful visuals and compelling supernatural story will remind you why you love to play computer games. The Enhanced Edition builds in an already good game, making it a great game.

9. N+ — Platformer

(DS, PSP) Atari had a hell of a year. N+ is a sickly addictive, graphically simple platformer where you do what good platforming good guys do — jump around and collect gold.

8. Resistance 2 — Action

(PlayStation 3) This might be the best multiplayer game on the list, with as many as 60 players getting together online and shooting the bejesus out of anything that moves. There is also a gripping alternate history storyline.

Resistance 2 also boasts the best trailer.

7. Dead Space — Action

(PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC) Electronic Arts stepped way out of its comfort zone of sports games and The Sims to put together a haunting sci-fi action game that will suck you in until you’re completely addicted.

Bottom line: EA’s balls dropped this year, and they put out some sick games that are better than 18 or the last 19 Maddens.

6. Guitar Hero: World Tour — Music

(PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii) This is comparable to the first Rock Band, with players jamming on drums, guitars, and a microphone. There’s one important difference, though: With Guitar Hero: World Tour, you can compose your own songs.

Activision finally made a music game that’s as good as Rock Band, a year later. The jury is still out on the studio mode. I’m just waiting for them to put out a Rammstein track pack so I can relive high school.

5. LittleBigPlanet — Platformer

(PlayStation 3, PSP) Users create downloadable content for this game, in which you guide players called Sackboys through a variety of levels and tasks.

Xbox 360 may be killing PS3 in sales again, but PlayStation has the most best games.

4. Fable II — RPG

(Xbox 360) This cerebral game starts with a magic box that grants wishes to your character – who begins as a poverty-stricken orphan and grows up to be whoever you want him to be – good or evil, even straight or gay.

Ok, here’s where I swallow hard, because we’re at #3 and it’s an Xbox exclusive. Fable II is also one of our highest rated games.

3. Rock Band 2 — Music

(PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, Wii) It looks, feels, and plays a lot like the original Rock Band, the four-player phenomenon with guitar, bass, drum, and microphone. But Rock Band 2 has more than 80 new songs and plenty more available to purchase, plus an 18-song AC/DC concert you can buy or download.

2. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots — Action

(PlayStation 3) The only argument I might find here is that it’s not #1, which GameSpot may insist on. They gave it a perfect 10/10.

1. Fallout 3 — Action/RPG

As my review said, not only is Fallout 3 the best game o f the year, but it’s one of the best games ever made. Blast’s Best Game of E3 is also Blast’s Best Game of 2008. Fallout 3 is the best game of 2008, and may not be beat for a long time.

Aftermath

Missing Wii-only games? Yeah. We are. And it’s not just because I said Wii would fail back in 2006. You can make the case for Mario Kart, and you can argue Brawl into the mix, but 2008 was a disaster for the Wii. Nintendo also did a belly flop at E3, and we were there to see it. Funny thing is that 2007 was huge for Wii, 2008 was a write-off, and 2009 might be another huge year if the Motion Plus takes off, and I do like the Motion Plus.

There are times when I feel like LittleBigPlanet is some of the most fun I have had with a game in a long time, as it exudes the kind of quality in a platformer that you rarely see outside of the hallowed grounds of Nintendo products. There are other times where I want to smack my Sackboy with my Dualshock 3 in much the same way you can smack other players around in co-op mode, thanks to frustrating control mechanics and the occasional hiccup with getting stuck under objects and being forced to waste a life.

Platformer
Sony
October 27, 2008
4.5 out of 5 stars

Even before it was released, “LittleBigPlanet” was featured by Sony as the new flagship franchise, the one that will finally bring them the mascot they always seem to be missing.

This was a risky move of sorts, as the company relied on month after month of hype in order to build up what is essentially a platformer with creative options available to the players. Boiling the game down to that kind of concept is not fair though, as there is a lot more going on in “LittleBigPlanet” than the advertising campaign has put forth. The question is, is there enough in it for you this fall and winter though, when there is no shortage of quality games to be found?

There is plenty to love about “LittleBigPlanet,” starting with the fact that it’s disarmingly adorable. The graphics themselves are easy on the eyes, with detailed backgrounds and foregrounds for your Sackboy to run and jump around, but the real winner here is just how cute everything looks. The graphics and Sackboy’s traverse the line between cartoony and realistic, but developer Media Molecule struck a balance with this decision that ended up helping the game’s presentation.

The music is high-quality, addictive stuff. The kind of music you catch yourself hearing in your head or whistling at various times of day, which is always a plus in a game. It’s not of the same caliber as the fantastic soundtracks to some other recent platformers, say, “Super Mario Galaxy”, but it’s still a diverse, well-rounded and catchy soundtrack that you will be hard-pressed to find complaint with. This adds to the presentation as well, which is phenomenal and one of the key draws to the experience.

You can customize your Sackboy and make him or her look however you see fit, though at first your options are somewhat limited. Before you even finish off the first of the worlds though, you will have collected enough unlockable costumes and accessories to jazz up your Sackboy’s appearance. Your character is not the only thing you can customize with user created content, the backbone of this game, is on a scale that arguably no console title has ever reached before.

You can create your own levels and find more parts to use in these levels by collecting and unlocking more of the game’s hidden stickers, level parts, etc. The system itself is easier than one would suspect, given the nature of what you can do. My creative juices do not flow enough for me to have completed anything worthwhile, but the system itself is easy to handle, and as many have already proven, you can make some quality levels that rival those packaged with the game. This also gives the game near infinite replay value, for those who enjoy their platforming.

One issue that has cropped up since the game’s release has to do with the user created levels. Many levels have been taken down for being “tributes” to intellectual properties that Sony does not own-for example, good luck making a level that is based off of “Super Mario Bros.” and having it survive for any considerable length of time. Many players know exactly why their level was taken down, as their tribute breaks the rules in the user agreement everyone (had the opportunity to) read before ever playing with their Sackboy.

The issue for some has been that Media Molecule, who is essentially policing the Internet, has not been giving out reasons for why levels are being deleted. This can be a problem, especially for those who tediously work on their levels and create legitimate fun arenas for play.

As for the gameplay itself, there are pros and cons. The platforming is fun and simple, and even those who are not “core” gamers can pick up and play, and play well, relatively quickly. The first world is essentially an extended tutorial-it’s not overbearing, and the narrator both explains himself well and is witty. This works to ease those who are not used to playing into the experience, and helps more experienced gamers get their bearings early on.

You run, you jump, you pick up objects and move them to help you climb, and you use a jetpack to fly around, either for moving up in a level, crossing a gap, or to assist in moving objects to where they need to be. It’s simple, but it’s addicting, thanks to smart level design and the adorable nature of the title. If you play cooperatively, they also rank the players in order of points, and then compare your total score versus other teams who have played the levels. It gives the pre-packaged levels additional replay value along with the multiple runs to unlock all of the level’s items.
