Will you be the next Jackie Chan?

Kinect games have taught us to dance and to move our hands in the air like inflatable arm flailing tube men, but can they teach us the fluid and precise art of kung fu? Indie developer Kinesthetic Games thinks we can, and its upcoming game Kung Fu Superstar hopes to make us feel like action movie stars too.

Kung Fu Superstar follows the story of Danny Cheng, an up-and-coming martial artist, as he rises through the ranks of fame and stardom. “Aided by his trusted Sifu, Danny will discover the secrets of kung fu and become the most popular martial arts stuntman Hollywood has ever known.”

Using the Kinect, players will use their whole bodies to perform kung fu moves on-screen and take down various different opponents in distinct sets and environments. Past self-defense Kinect games like Ubisoft’s Training Camp just felt awkward because there isn’t another opponent in the same room as you, so it will be interesting to see how Kung Fu Superstar teaches you martial arts and also makes a game out of it without feeling too diluted in asynchronous motion controls. Not only that, but let’s hope the Kinect sensor can keep up with our lightning-fast reflexes.

Kinesthetic Games was founded by former Lionhead developer Kostas Zarifis and is made up of employees from other gaming studios including Codemasters, EA, and Climax.

Kung Fu Superstar is currently being marketed for just the Kinect, but its trailer also contains tags for Wii and PlayStation 3, so it looks like the game may be released on multiple platforms. With Jackie Chan having announced his retirement from the action film scene, who knows if this game will give us the next martial arts superstar.

The third trip to Albion is a mixed, but mostly fun experience.

When Lionhead studios head Peter Molyneux announced the original Fable to the world before its 2004 release date, he made some pretty lofty promises. Though the team at Lionhead Studios tried, the finished product didn’t deliver on a number of those promises. Now, over six years later, little has changed and while the game does feature a number of gorgeous set pieces and a slew of breathtaking moments; it also fails to deliver in a number of ways, including game crippling bugs and a still unfixed combat system. But hey – at least John Cleese is your butler.

In theory – Fable III is a much different game than its predecessors. Rather than starting off as an earnest and simple village boy who goes on a quest to become a great hero, you start off as a prince… who goes on a quest to become a great hero. While it may just be a new coat on the same old mechanic, it does add an interesting twist to the formula, from the start, you’ll be making decisions that impact an entire kingdom, as well as your character’s personal growth. You play as the son (or daughter) of the hero of Fable II, your older brother Logan has taken up the throne and rules the kingdom of Albion with an iron fist. Do you follow in his ways and strike fear into the citizens, or rule as his just and fair counterpart? Not only what you do, but how you do it will have a lasting effect on Albion and its citizens.

While you do have an impressive amount of choice in Fable III, the main story is strangely linear. Fable III features a much bigger emphasis on story, and isn’t afraid of holding your hand to tell it. In some aspects, this makes the game a bit too easy – you’re rarely allowed to do anything that will change the way the game’s main characters see you. In fact, it’s not until you overthrow your brother’s rule and take the thrown that you’re given the freedom you’re accustomed to in Fable games. It’s excusable to an extent, as it makes for a far much more interesting story, but you lose a sense of what makes the franchise so different.

Make no mistake about it though – Albion is the game’s main character. The folks at Lionhead have brought the village to life more impressively than ever here, and you’ll find it tough not to marvel at times. The main kingdom of Albion is now a center for industry and trade, her skyline is dotted with smokestacks and factories, but going outside of this area, as your quests often require you to do will take you to far different worlds, from snow covered mountain tops to dense and foggy forests. The citizens you’ll encounter are just as full of life as the city itself, they’ll have their own thoughts, send you on side quests and sure as hell aren’t afraid to tell you what they think of your brother and yourself. And yes, like previous Fable games before it, you’ll be able to make friends, enemies or even marry any of them. Oh, and John Cleese is your Butler, so that’s cool. It’s these aspects of Fable III perhaps that make the title such a joy to play through.

As you may have expected, Fable III features an excellent player progression system, but here, it’s much better than even past Fable games. Everything you do, from how you interact with the world around you, to how you choose to fight will shape how your character looks, behaves and is perceived. Use a lot of magic? You’ll start to develop an otherworldly glow. Carry a huge broad sword and you’ll find yourself bulking up faster. What’s interesting here is that with the vast differences between the cities and villages, how you’re perceived throughout Albion will change dramatically as you traverse the game’s world.

Of course, you don’t become a hero by impressing the towns folk with your wit and charm – you’ve got to get your hands dirty and slay some evildoers (or good guys depending on how you act). Unfortunately, the combat in Fable III suffers from some of the same issues that plagued the first two games, and these issues tend to make the combat sections of the game some of the most unsatisfying portions of the game. The targeting system is completely unreliable, but the strangest aspect is the fact that unlike in previous games, each of your attacks acts completely independent of each other, which means that you’ll have no incentive to build up each of your character’s abilities. Instead, you’ll focus more on what’s successful – which in most cases turns out to be magic attacks, which can take out an entire group of attackers at once.

Perhaps the most disappointing part of the Fable III experience is the weird series of technical snafus seen throughout the game. There are several instances throughout the game where the framerate drops dramatically. The majority of these drops occur during the game’s side games, like the job missions like Lute Hero or Blacksmithing. Another issue is with the game’s frustrating path finding issues. Sadly, these issues effect the one thing that’s supposed to be a constant in the game – your dog. In a perfect world, your dog helps you find hidden items and attack enemies, but more often than not your canine companion will get stuck behind objects. The same thing occurs with anyone you happen to be holding their hand. It’s frustrating and stops you from enjoying a good portion of the game.

The Blast Factor: Fable III is both as close to what Peter Molyneaux originally promised, and the most far off. Traveling through Ablion is a deeply rewarding and interesting experience that you’ll want to keep going back to. It’s not perfect, but there’s enough here to keep even the most seasoned heroes satisfied for quite some time to come.

The one that only wants to be human…and to take over the world? Yeah, you’ll probably never see it again.

According to Eurogamer (who credits an anonymous source), work on Molyneux’s life simulator has officially been halted and 19workers contracted for the title have been let go. The source goes on to say that the studio will now work exclusively on the Fable series and that the tech from Milo will be incorporated into an upcoming, yet unannounced Kinect enabled Fable title.

Milo’s fate has been uncertain for some time now, as it was announced, then unannounced that Milo was a merely a tech demo. Lionhead hasn’t commented on the rumors, but we’ll update when they do.

The box art for Lionhead’s Fable III hit the Internet today and, besides looking quite fantastic, it indicates a PC version of the role-playing-game exists.

The art, which has since been taken down, clearly states at the top of its box “Only on Xbox 360 and Windows” leading us to believe there’s a PC version in the works.

It’s either a fairly substantial labeling error, one we wouldn’t reasonably think could be made, or a surprise announcement of the existence of a PC Fable III version.

We’ve reached out to Microsoft and Microsoft UK for comment and will update if/when we hear back.

Learn up on Fable 3 news at the newly redesigned site.

Lionhead Studios, the development team behind the storied Fable series, launched a redesigned website recently, allowing fans access to the latest Fable and Lionhead news as well as the ability to jump into the conversation in forums.

The new website, which has a neat little animated graphic on its figurative ceiling, has tabs for news, games, jobs, contact information and of course a Twitter feed on the right-hand side.

New website

Hit the Community tab for a chance to join in the discussion on topics ranging from Fable III to Project Milo as well as the always entertaining Off Topic destination.

And now that we’ve learned of Lionhead’s intention to fill the Fable III world with animals, perhaps the studio will gush more informational details somewhere on the new site’s pages in the future.

Whatever Lionhead’s intentions were, the new website makes it harder to leave after just one click, thus justifying its existence as a hype machine for Fable III. But that’s not so bad, is it?

As video games continue to expand, popular film and television actors are finding their way to the small screen to lend their voice boxes to the imaginative worlds we play in.

Fable III

Actor Sir Ben Kingsley just can’t get enough.

He’s playing a lead role in the upcoming video game film adaptation Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and today confirmed his role in Lionhead Studio’s upcoming role-playing-game Fable III.

Speaking with games site Computer and Video Games, Kingsley confirmed his role as “King of Mist” in the game and spoke further about the medium.

"I’m a voice in a new video game shortly — Fable III. I’m a wonderful wizard character who is the king of Mist Peak," adding "It’s very energising and good for us actors to realise that [acting] is so diverse now. [Games] are as big a jump now as I suppose when cinema was invented, when people went from the stage to the cinema thinking: It’s not really acting, is it? Now, it’s video games — and it is acting. It’s very demanding."

Other confirmed voice actors for the project due out by year’s end are Stephen Fry, John Cleese and Jonathon Ross.

Main episodes on the house, additional ones to come later.

Peter Molyneux, head man over at Lionhead Studios, the team responsible for the Fable franchise, today confirmed that Fable III will release episodically.

He said “the first big episodes” will be the main game and that smaller adventures will follow as (likely) paid downloadable content.

“I’ve often thought it would be brilliant to be walking through Charles Dickens’ London. It was such a dark place and very episodic too — so we’re doing that with Fable III,” he said. “We’ll give you the first big episodes, and you’ll be able to download new episodes, which is analogous to the way Dickens wrote.”

The famed game designer also said downloadable goodies will be available in the game world itself, thus removing the need to fiddle around with the finicky dashboard.

And on the subject of Project Natal implementation in the game, which we know it will have, Molyneux said it’s all up to you.

“You still need a controller to play Fable III but there are places in the world where you can use Natal, where it’s cute, funny, engaging. You don’t need it but it does enable an enhanced Fable III.”

Now, it remains to be revealed if Fable III will release both digitally and on physical disc and if the game will bear a lesser price tag considering not all the content is available. Or maybe we’re misinterpreting his words here and Molyneux is simply referring to DLC, the way Fable II did it.

When word comes officially from Microsoft, we’ll update the story.

When Sony announced the PlayStation Move earlier this week at the 2010 Game Developers Conference, no one was very surprised or overly excited, Lionhead boss and Fable series designer Peter Molyneux included. He even likened the present motion control era to an arms race of sorts.

“We’re not really surprised, are we?” said Molyneux. “I mean, at E3 last year we saw they were having a wand, and that’s kind of what I expected. It looks like they’ve taken a step forward but it’s not as big a step as something like Natal, I don’t think. This is purely me talking personally, but I think maybe it’s slightly more a device for the core than it is for the casual market, because I think it’s quite precise.

PlayStation Move

“As a designer it’s another one of those things I’d love to get my hands on and to play around with. As a consumer, everyone’s talking about motion control now — I mean, I’m starting to get confused. It’s kind of like the arms race, with the Wii MotionPlus and now the Sony Move and now I’m getting kind of confused.”

Right now I’m truly skeptical of Sony’s “Move.” I mean, I bought a Wii to play those types of games. If Sony incorporates Move to big-name titles, like the rumored Killzone 3, and I’m forced to buy this dongle, I won’t be too pleased. Just my thoughts though. What do you think?

Your own personal space in the upcoming RPG to do....whatever you'd like in.

In Fable III, Lionhead’s third installment in the role-playing-game saga, gone are the two dimensional menus, in favor of a personalized and dynamic “Guild Chamber.”

This chamber, a fully three-dimensional room, where your character can walk around, is a place to try on new clothes, weapons and listen to the comedic banter of “the butler,” voiced by Monty Python’s whimsical genius John Cleese.

In another room, the treasure trove, will be all the gold you’ve amassed. And as Peter Molyneux, the game’s creative director so eloquently put it, you can “rub gold all over your hot naked body,” if you’d like.

What might be most compelling about the Guild Chambers though, is its War Room, a place to view the game’s new, dynamic map.

Molyneux said Fable II’s map was “rubbish” and the new one allows the gamer to oversee and examine the entire living and breathing world, before embarking on quests.

Have a look at IGN’s video interview with the man, on their Web site, it’s worth it, believe me.

You will not want to miss this one. Lionhead gushes on third installment.

Lionhead is gearing up to release Fable III this Holiday season, but before it can release, we have to hear creative director Peter Molyneux and a staff of developers describe why the game will be huge.

This is that video.

In it we get a look at Lionhead’s studio as well as an intimate chat with Molyneux, who gushes about Dynamic Weapons and a Extreme Morph.

The Dynamic Weapons, as you could guess, change based upon who wields them. If you’re evil and kill a lot of innocents, the blood of their trauma will run down your sword. This is an intriguing concept, as it will complement how your character will dynamically change based on moral choices as well.

The Extreme Morph is quite a bit more intriguing though. This is an action, located on your wheel of actions, that will allow you, should someone irk you, to demonstrate “who your character truly is” by performing an awe-inspiring morph expression. In the case of the video, angel wings sprout from the character’s back and all are defeated.

Have a look at the video detailing all of this below and the game’s first screen shots, right here.

Lionhead Studios’ Fable III was shown yesterday at Microsoft’s invite-only X10 event in Washington State and along with the revelation of that your kingly character will sport dynamic weapons and a new morph action (more on this later!), Microsoft released a handful of new screens for the game.
The gorgeous fields and mountains of Albion, now your desktop wallpaper.

Fable III developer Lionhead Studios has been surprisingly quiet about the third installment it plans on launching late 2010 (and teasing in February), but if concept artwork is your thing, today is your day.

Lionhead released a gorgeous wallpaper painting of beautiful Albion today complete with its memorable rolling hills, lush forest, tall mountains, and a general soft tone to the entire thing.

Oh Albion.

The wallpaper is available for download in three different dimensions from the Fable Blog, and looks quite nice once applied as a wallpaper, at least on my screen. Staring at it every day knowing we’re a year out from its release will be painful, but something I can surely endure.

You've read about it, but get ready to see it in action.

Fable III, the third installment in the Microsoft-exclusive fantasy/adventure role-playing-game franchise from Lionhead Studios was officially unveiled at GamesCom over the summer, but all we saw was a cryptic teaser trailer. That’s all about to change, and soon.

According to Lionhead’s community manager Sam Van Tilburgh, who’s been Tweeting an awful lot, the game will officially be unveiled (likely with gameplay shown) next month.

The man Tweeted the following:

“I’m writing storyboard summaries for two new #Fable3 videos @LionheadStudios.”

And then this:

"videos are to come out when we show #Fable3 for the 1st time at an event next month in SF."

Well now, looks like Lionhead is bringing Fable III to an event in San Francisco in February. That event is a mystery to us, but whatever the time or the place, we know it’s going down in February. So Fable-fans (myself very much included), new information is inbound!!

Dear Fable fans, Lionhead ramps up the hype machine with this art.

The Fable series art direction has always left me amazed and in awe. Attention to detail, the feeling of a living and breathing locations, and overall impeccable execution, are all elements I’ve come to adore in the Fable series. I feel a gripping connection to the fantasy world within, and from the popularity and success of the franchise, that sentiment is probably mirrored millions of times over.

Anyway, today Lionhead, developer of the series, dropped a new concept art shot of everyone’s favorite hub city Bowerstone from the land of Albion.

Looks great to me, and I can’t wait to see it actualized! But I’m just a fan-boy right? What do you think?

Microsoft's motion-sensing technology in next year's game?

Lionhead’s next Fable game, Fable III, due out sometime in 2010, might use Microsoft’s motion-sensing technology.

Project Natal, the technology in question, first announced at E3 2009, could see its way to the role-playing-game in one way or another according to a recent interview with the Lionhead boss.

Molyneux, the master of hype and equivocation, when responding to a interviewer who said Natal would not be used in Fable III, said “I didn’t say that.” Oh here we go.

“I am going to say it’s going to use a controller,” he continued, “But I’ve never said it’s not going to use Natal. And obviously what would probably happen if I started talking about this is you would see a little red dot appear moving on my forehead. And then as I would start to speak the words then there would be a shot, gunfire, and I would be assassinated.”

Molyneux went on to say “Do you really think … knowing me … I wouldn’t want to use something like Natal? I mean that’s just mad, man.”

Does anyone out there want motion-control in Fable III? If properly implemented, like anything, it could work, but it’d have to be damn impressive to sway my mind.

Enjoy the RPG in small segments beginning today.

Lionhead, makers of all things Fable, today unleashed episode one in the Fable II episode series on Xbox Live, and it’s free.

The role-playing-game, released last October, will be spliced into 5 segments, the first of which debuted today on Xbox Live in the Games on Demand section costing you not a pretty penny. You can download it here.

The first episode in the “Fable II: Game Episodes” series introduces you to the world of Albion and its breadth of choice and consequence. The description says “players are introduced to the vibrant world of Albion where every choice has a consequence, and are able to experience childhood and the trials of being a young adult.” So I wouldn’t expect more than an hour of game-play out of this episode, if my memory serves me correctly.

All achievements, as well as game add-ons “Knothole Island” and “See The Future” are compatible with the Episodes and should you decide to buy the physical disc mid-series, your save file will thankfully transfer over.

Episodes 2-5 are available for purchase in-game after the completion of Episode 1, so you can’t simply start at Episode 3, that’d make no sense!

Fable II is now the first major Xbox 360 title to not only be available in full digital fashion but also episodically.

That digital revolution? I think it’s here.

Peter Molyneux and Lionhead are at it again, debut trailer, and reasons why we're excited inside.

Yesterday at GamesCom 2009 in Cologne, Germany, the head of the “Fable” development team, Peter Molyneux, announced what we all were expecting, a third installment in the storied Fable franchise, Fable III.

Set to launch sometime in 2010, Fable III, will again be a Microsoft exclusive, and will contain a new game mechanic, one that departs from the norm, and delves into the unknown, and one that has Blast particularly excited.

If you played the final piece of DLC for Fable 2, “See the Future,” you should have already sensed rumblings of a new direction, as a “new ruler need rise” was the final bit.

Molyneux confirmed that direction as he unveiled that players will not become a hero, rather that they’ll begin their lives as a son/daughter of a hero, and tirelessly strive to become ruler of the land. The first half of the game will have players attempting to dethrone a merciless tyrant by forming alliances, gaining followers, and uniting factions. And as you probably guessed, in true Fable style, your actions WILL have moral reprecussions.

Furthermore, the kind of silly emote mechanic of Fable 2 has been eschewed, (as you are now the ruler and farting in public would not be proper) in favor of what Molyneux calls “Touch.” Touch allows gamers to hug, shake hands, embrace and even give someone a full-on good “snogging.”

As a big Fable fan I like how this game sounds thus far, but we are talking about Peter Molyneux here, the king of hype. For now, enjoy this albeit only voice over, trailer, and let us know what you think!

Lionhead invites you back to the world of Albion and offers a glimpse of what's to come.

Peter Molyneux, boss at Lionhead announced the second batch of DLC for the studio’s award winning fantasy role playing game, Fable 2, at GDC last week, but today dropped significant details on the next piece of digital wares.

Officially titled “See The Future,” this next iteration of downloadable content will challenge the Hero in new ways while meeting new characters, creatures, and by attending events and collecting artifacts.

Remember Murgo, from the odd reminiscent childhood scene?‚ He’ll be venturing to BowerStone market equipped with brand new merchandise of all sorts, including the very, very mysteriously intriguing “canine breed transformation potion.”

In addition, two new quests, “The Ghost of the Snowglobe” and “The Cursed Knight” will extend and infuse prior game elements in new and very exciting ways.

Still not enough? “See The Future” will additionally contain sparkly new clothing, helmets, hairstyles, an undefined Hero expression, a Murgo the Trader statue, and the back-flip ability for your four-legged companion.

Finally, those who emerge victorious will be granted a mystical quest, one that “provides a vision of Albion’s future and what lies ahead for those born into the heroic bloodline,” which is literally translated, the first inklings of Fable 3, probably.

“See The Future” will hit Xbox Live sometime next month priced at 560 MS Points.

Lionhead boss Molyneux speaks to how his company survived rampant job cuts, remained joyous

Microsoft Games Studios recently axed over 5,000 jobs at a number of internal studios including Banjo Kazooie creators Rare, and Games for Windows Live, ACES, and many other unfortunate establishments.

The lone survivor of this night of long knives? Lionhead Studios — the friendly United Kingdom blokes that created the Fable series and recently released the sequel stateside.

Legendary video game designer and boss at Lionhead, Peter Douglas Molyneux spearheaded the defense of his company by “remaining professional and playing the internal PR game.”

“Our mission statement is to be the most respected developer in the world, and to create landmark games. And underneath that, to be the most professional studio in Microsoft Game Studios,” Molyneux remarked in a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz.

“Part of that means that when we want to do something, we can’t throw our creative toys out of the pram and say, ‘Look, we want to do this because we’re really smart people.’ We have to prove it.

As we reported early last week, Microsoft came under fire with recent allegations of homophobia from none other than a former employee of Lionhead. Molyneux however, disputed the claims (which have since been settled) by saying:

“I think if you walk around that studio, everybody is happier and they feel more empowered and more creative than they’ve ever felt before.

“I think everyone is really happy at Lionhead. That happiness is defined by the products they’ve just worked on – Fable 2. People feel super-proud of what they’ve done, and they feel they’re trusted creatively to do amazing things.”

Hardly a concise answer from the legend of hype, but without specifics from either side, it is a difficult issue to discern with any true understanding. What is clear however is Molyneux’s love for all things Fable, and the long rumored Fable 3 is, come on, obviously going to happen.

Lionhead keeps it interesting with more DLC planned. Details inside.

A post on the Fable 2 developer diary blog today unveiled some quirky achievement statistics and future plans for the award winning Xbox 360 exclusive.

Fable 2 was awarded the ‘Easiest RPG’ and ‘Most Original’ achievement award from Xbox360achievments.org for ‘The Swinger’ achievement in which the hero must have conjugal relations with multiple individuals, testing the moral precepts of the player.‚ I received the achievement by accident when I wined and dine Becky the Housewife and had no idea Lisa the prostitute was in tow.‚ Oops.

Lionhead dropped some statistics as well stating 2.6 million copies have been sold to date with 66,000,000 total achievements unlocked.‚ The easiest achievement to attain with 2,800,000 unlocks, was “Whippersnapper,” attainable through a very entry level task. ‚ ‚ On the opposite end of the spectrum, the most difficult achievement statistically speaking was “The Dollcatcher,” with a mere 61,037 unlocked representing only 1.9%.

Finally, Lionhead wants everyone to know they are hard at work and fully committed to updating Fable 2 at least one more time with a new DLC package.‚ The team based in Guildford, England is hard at work on new and exciting content with more details in the coming weeks and months.

Until then, check out the Lionhead crew celebrating their BAFTA award for Best Action Game with Fable 2 in the gallery.
