Lady Gaga revealed her Born This Way Foundation (BTWF) today at Harvard University. Her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, accompanied her as she announced the non-profit charitable foundation to students, youth, policy makers and a panel of noteworthy guests.

Oprah Winfrey interviewed Gaga in the Sanders Theatre and Gaga took the stand as if she were participating in a mock trial. She testified about her plans for the foundation in front of Deepak Chopra, Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Alyssa Rodemeyer, Professor Charles Ogletree, Dr. Susan M. Swearer and David Burtka.

BTWF aims to create a welcoming environment for youth and address issues such as  low self-confidence and bullying. It hopes to give youth the resources needed to be comfortable with their individuality. The foundation will also provide mentoring and career development and give youth the tools needed to implement change.

Lady Gaga has contributed $1.2 million to the organization. Barneys New York and The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation have also made sizable contributions to BTWF. MacArthur, Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society and The California Endowment will each assist with BTWF’s research efforts.

The Born Brave Bus will give youth additional opportunities  to get involved with BTWF.  The bus will drive across the country and act as a place for youth to feel connected and learn about civic engagement opportunities. The Born Brave Bus, along with onsite mentors, will also travel with Lady Gaga’s next US concert tour.

“Don’t play the stupid game ’cause I’m a different kind of girl, every record sounds the same, you’ve got to step into my world,” sings pop icon Madonna in her new single, “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” from her latest album entitled ”MDNA.” In the song’s pep rally-inspired music video, which premiered Feb. 3, Madonna is dressed in sexy, skimpy, provocative clothing. Doll-faced cheerleaders dance around and helmet-wearing players tackle. The song features British rapper/songwriter M.I.A. and Pink Friday Barbie, Nicki Minaj. The three stars capture their audience representing creativity, diversity and individuality.

When watching the outré video, one can’t help but acknowledge that some of its visuals have been seen elsewhere before. In one scene, Madonna pushes a baby stroller, and in another, she cradles a baby doll at her breast, finally throwing the doll off to the side. This visual resembles some of the uncensored provocative visuals Lady Gaga has displayed in her past videos. In another scene, Madonna falls into the hands of a group of football players while wearing a big cross around her neck, resembling Gaga’s fall while portraying a nun wearing a white robe with red crosses in her video for “Alejandro.”

Madonna, though, said in a recent interview with ABC’s Cynthia McFadden that when she heard Gaga’s 2011 single “Born This Way,” she thought it sounded “very familiar,” and much like Madge’s 1989 “Express Yourself.”

“It feels reductive,” said Madonna. When asked by McFadden if that’s a good thing, Madonna responded coyly, “Look it up.”

As The Simpsons approaches the end of its 23rd season, they released the announcement that Lady Gaga will be appearing in the season finale as a special guest.

Matt Groening, creator of the show, said of Gaga’s appearances in the studio “The great thing about having Lady Gaga is that she came in a number of times and always with a different getup. Like, she’d leave the room and come back in after a break in a completely new getup. It was unbelievable. The only time that she ever took off her hat was when it was banging into the microphone.”

The satirical comedy show has aired 500 episodes as of yesterday’s “At Long Last Leave”.

In a righteous effort to help stop bullying, Lady Gaga tweeted about the recent death of Jamey Rodemeyer, a buffalo teenager who killed himself after being bullied for being gay, and declared she wouldn’t stop fighting for the cause until legislation was passed.

The powerful pop figure tweeted “Bullying must become illegal. It is hate crime. I am meeting with our President. I will not stop fighting. This must end. Our generation has the power to end it. Trend it. #MakeALawForJamey.”

Lady Gaga interviews Debbie Harry about her upcoming album, being an icon, and that famous hair color, in Harper’s Bazaar’s September issue, on newsstands August 16. Full interview here.

Lady Gaga: It’s hard to make records that you are happy with artistically and then be aware that you have a record label and it must be commercially sold. Tell me more about “China Shoes.” I actually started to cry when I first heard it.

Debbie Harry: You’re an artist, and you’re feeling things and giving them your own interpretation; we embrace it, and the emotion touches us, and then we apply it to our lives. I mean, even jokingly, you know how women feel about their shoes [laughs]. It becomes very important.

LG: It made me very, very emotional. It reminds me so much of my life, especially when you mention Brooklyn, because I live in Brooklyn. It reminds me of how sometimes I feel that moments in my life are interrupted because I’m so dedicated to my work. I often feel like my shoes are the only part of me that know what I’m doing all the time because they’re always with me. There’s this one pair of boots that I always wear, and sometimes when I’m so alone in my hotel room, I look at them and I think how they really are the only things in my life that know exactly what I’ve been through all day. So is that what the song was about, or was there a different meaning?

DH: I try to put a core of real sensitivity and make the words childish to just say simply, This person is going away, and I’m missing them very much. I’m not going to recover unless they come back soon, and I’m leaving this note in the back of a book because I know you’re going to read it when you are traveling.

LG: That’s so funny because I had a lover who was a writer, and I used to leave him notes in his book, so it meant a lot to me. I know it sounds so crazy that the lyric would fit perfectly to my life, but that song was just really beautiful.

DH: I’m loving it too, and we actually do it now in the show. I’ve seen one of your shows, actually. I went to the Garden. It was fantastic.

LG: Oh, you were at the Garden? Actually, it’s probably best that I didn’t know you were there because I would have been too nervous.

LG: Now, this is a more over-arching question, but are you aware of the tremendous effect you had on women when you dyed the underside of your blonde hair black? Because when I experiment with a different blonde, like I did that very yellow blonde and a teal blonde and a lavender blonde, I put a black root in because of you.

Clarence Clemons, the saxophonist on Bruce Springsteen’s classic albums, died on Saturday at a Palm Beach, Fla. hospital from complications from a stroke. He was 69.

Clemons suffered the stroke on June 12, according to a Springsteen spokeswoman. Initially, reports said that Clemons was recovering well, but the Rolling Stone reported that his condition worsened late in the week.

“Clarence lived a wonderful life. He carried within him a love of people that made them love him,” Springsteen said in a statement. “He created a wondrous and extended family. He loved the saxophone, loved our fans and gave everything he had every night he stepped on stage. His loss is immeasurable and we are honored and thankful to have known him and had the opportunity to stand beside him for nearly forty years.”

Clemons played famous solos on songs such as “Born to Run,” “Jungleland,” “Badlands,” and “Dancing in the Dark.” He and Springsteen have been playing together since 1971, when they played clubs on the Jersey Shore.

“He was my great friend, my partner, and with Clarence at my side, my band and I were able to tell a story far deeper than those simply contained in our music. His life, his memory, and his love will live on in that story and in our band,” said Springsteen.

Clemons latest sax work was with Lady Gaga on her recently released video, “Edge of Glory.” His final performance was with the singer on the season finale of American Idol. He also worked with such music greats as Ringo Starr, Aretha Franklin and the Grateful Dead.

The sax star also tried acting with roles in “New York, New York,” and “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.” He also made various television appearances. Two years ago, he published his autobiography, “Big Man: Real Life and Tall Tales.”

Clemons was the oldest member of Springsteen’s accompaniment and had suffered multiple knee and spinal surgeries in the past few years.

Married five times, Clemons is survived by his widow, Victoria, and four sons.

She was the first person to reach nine million followers on Twitter in March and now has more followers than Britney Spears and Justin Bieber do.

Gaga will release her next single, “Hair” on Monday and the album, “Born This Way” will be out on May 23.

Since Lady Gaga‘s “Judas” video was released Thursday, it’s been very controversial for its proposed religious innuendos. It’s not surprising, is it?

Lady Gaga tweeted, “The Cultural Baptism cannot be stopped.”

Co-director of the video Laurieann Gibson told MTV, “To the religious groups, I don’t even know that there’s religious [stuff in there]. I’m like, you know, Jesus did have a crown of thrones, he did die for my sins. I’m a believer, so I say to them, those religious people, personally, I can’t speak for Gaga, but as a director, a choreographer, as a believer, I say, ‘Take a look at yourself.’ For me, I would never [defame] my savior and the love and the non-judgment of what Jesus means to me. So I say, ‘Take a closer look at why you’re judging.’”

Also Gibson said about the process of creating the video, “The discussions were massive, the concepts were many prior to landing on a place. They were just exciting, full of passion. It was a magical process and we’re really proud of where we ended up.”

Lady Gaga apologized for that she described accusations of plagiarism against her hit, “Born This Way” as “retarded” in a recent interview with NME magazine.

Gaga released a statement on Perez Hilton’s web site and said Thursday, “I consider it part of my life’s work and music to push the boundaries of love and acceptance. My apologies for not speaking thoughtfully. To anyone that was hurt, please know that it was furiously unintentional. An honest mistake, requires honesty to make. Whether life’s disabilities, left you outcast bullied or teased, rejoice and love yourself today.”

Lady Gaga tweeted the album cover for her up-coming album “Born This Way” Saturday afternoon. In the black and white cover art, Gaga looks like half human and half motorcycle. The album will be out on May 23.

Al though Gaga was very excited by tweeting, “Can’t believe it’s here! So happy+free to finally share this w you,” some of her little monsters were not really excited by writing on the mother monster’s official web page, “WTF NO” or “A FUCKING MOTORCYCLE..” One of them even wrote, “This better be fake. Because I’m not OK with it.” And, another said, “It’s here to stay, Now stare at it and cry.”

It is not hard to remember that Gaga’s “Alejandro” from her latest album “The Fame Monster” somewhat sounded like Ace of Base’s “Don’t Turn Around.”

It seems like that “Born This Way”  talks about self-esteem, and Gaga recently told Vogue magazine, “Speaking purely from a musical standpoint, I think I am a great performer. I am a talented entertainer. I consider myself to have one of the greatest voices in the industry. I consider myself to be one of the greatest songwriters. I wouldn’t say that I am one of the greatest dancers, but I am really quite good at what I do. … I think it’s OK to be confident in yourself.” She continued, “I want to give my fans nothing less than the greatest album of the decade. I don’t want to give them something trendy. I want to give them the future.”

She also indicated that she has been compared to Madonna by saying, “I could go on and on about all of the people I have been compared to. From Madonna to Grace Jones to Debbie Harry to Elton John to Marilyn Manson to Yoko Ono — but at a certain point you have to realize that what they are saying is that I am cut from the cloth of performer, that I am like all of those people in spirit.”

Lady Gaga tweeted Monday: “Can’t wait any longer, single coming Friday. ?.”

Even though the original release date of her new single “Born This Way” was on February 13, now the single will be available on Feb 11, this Friday.

The song is the first single from the upcoming Gaga’s album of the same name.

She is scheduled to perform the song at the Grammy Awards on Sunday.

Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger is going to perform with singer Raphael Saadig at the Grammys this month as part of a tribute to soul star Solomon Burke, who died last year. Burke used to open for the Rolling Stones.

The 53rd annual Grammy Awards will be held on February 13, which will air live on CBS at 8 p.m.

The amazing thing is that even though we all know who he is (don’t we?), it will be his very first performance at the Grammys.

The Rolling Stones received a lifetime achievement award in 1986 and performed by satellite from London. Also the band won two Grammys in 1995.

Other than this British rock legend, there will be performances by Rihanna, Cee Lo Green, Gwyneth Paltrow, Eminem, Arcade Fire, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Usher, Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum and Justin Bieber.

New “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez’s new single “On the Floor” leaked online this past weekend.

The tune was produced by RedOne, known as Lady Gaga’s collaborator, and features Pitbull.

This summer, she is going to release a new album “Love?” which is also her first work from Def Jam.

Pop singer Ke$ha, 23, was named Billboard magazine’s Hot 100 Artist of the Year.

She told the magazine, “I pretty much feel like I’ve been reborn into this completely different existence. My entire life has become making music and playing shows, and I love it.”

Her first single “Tik Tok” was played on radio all over again earlier this year (this is why we all know the song very well) and spent nine weeks atop the Hot 100 list.

Lady Gaga was named Billboard’s Artist of the Year award for 2010.

Many celebrities, such as Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Kim Kardashian, Alicia Keys and Usher, signed off from Facebook and Twitter on World AIDS Day on December 1, promising to quit social networking until Keep a Child Alive’s “Buy Life” charity campaign had raised a total of $1 million. “I’m digitally dying tonite for WORLD AIDS DAY, this is my last tweet & testament,” he wrote.

However, Usher was back on Twitter when the charity had only raised $299,000 on December 5th. He tweeted on November 30th, “I’m digitally dying tonite for WORLD AIDS DAY, this is my last tweet & testament. Please visit http://bit.ly/dBDIai to BUY MY LIFE back now.” And, he started tweeting again on the 5th. Some fans were very excited to have him on Twitter again and others were wondering if he could tweet although other fellow celebrities have been still digitally dead.

Many celebrities, including Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Ryan Seacrest, Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Elijah Wood, Serena Williams, Janelle Monae and Swizz Beatz are getting ready for a new campaign called “Digital Life Sacrifice,” which will benefit Alicia Keys’ AIDS charity, “Keep a Child Alive.” The charity organization was started in 2003 in order to support people in Africa and India who are affected by HIV/AIDS.

This is how this works. They will sign off social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter starting Wednesday, which is World AIDS Day. And, they will not come back until the charity campaign raises $1 million.

Alicia Keys told the Associated Press, “It’s really important and super-cool to use mediums that we naturally are on.”

NEW YORK — The crowd at The Oak Room & Bar at the Plaza Hotel got an unexpected surprise last night when Lady Gaga showed up and performed.

Wearing a long blond wig and revealing outfit — which was made of human hair by the way — Gaga made a brief appearance on stage and sang three songs.

Her visit was kept secret until it was revealed on The Oak Room’s Twitter page saying "Lady Gaga here tonight. Maybe we’ll get a serenade in The Oak Bar tonight."

Gaga tweeted "Lonelydreams+champagne streams ,plaza courtyards, I can’t swim among them, so ill drink instead a star."

It is the first time Lady Gaga has appeared in public since the death of her grandfather last week. Joseph Germanotta, 88, passed away at a nursing home in New Jersey.

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga is scheduled to resume the latest North American leg of her Monster Ball world tour in Los Angeles on October 2.

It seems like a legal battle between "Bad Romance" singer Lady Gaga and her former producer, who was also her ex-beloved, has ended.

Producer Rob Fusari had sued Gaga for more than $30 million claiming he helped launch the pop superstar to fame and fortune but unable to profit from it when their romance ended.

He contended in his March lawsuit that he was a key figure in transforming the ambitious young female musician named Stefani Germanotta into the tremendous pop phenomenon, Lady Gaga. He also said he hooked her up with her record label and inked a deal entitling him to 15 to 20 per cent of her album profits.

Gaga countersued days later alleging the early agreement she had with Fusari was illegal and he tried to get a share of the proceeds from her first four albums, regardless of whether he contributed to them or not.

Both suits were dismissed by the New York State Supreme Court in late August and the decision was made public this week.

According to abc News, a spokeswoman for Lady Gaga said in a statement on Friday the Grammy-winning singer and Fusari "have agreed to end their dispute amicably and wish each other well."

"Rob Fusari is a Grammy award winning producer and co-writer of ‘Paparazzi’ and a number of other songs on Lady Gaga’s debut album ‘The Fame’," the statement said.

Additionally, Fusari’s lawsuit detailed how the singer met Fusari in March 2006 through a mutual friend. Initially unimpressed by her appearance, he asked her to sing and was "within seconds" blown away. "Fusari thought Germanotta’s songs were brilliant but lacked commercial appeal. He pushed her to explore different musical genres," his lawsuit said.

Just in time for her concerts at the Fake Boston Garden this week, and for the holiday weekend, Lady Gaga will be part of some new downloadable content for Guitar Hero and DJ Hero.

Available as of today, the DJ Hero Dance Party Mix Pack delivers a trio of new mixes- Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” mixed with “Girls On Film” by Duran Duran, Pussycat Dolls’ “Buttons” beat juggle and Rihanna’s “S.O.S.” beat juggle- that will have all of you plastic turntablists spinning, scratching and battling throughout the 4th of July weekend.

Ms. Gaga will also be featured in the Pop 1 Track Pack for Guitar Hero (which is also available today) with her club anthem “Just Dance”, as will Maroon 5′s hit “This Love” and arguably the worst song of the last five years, “Fireflies” by that dork who calls himself Owl City.

All of this DLC is available for the XBOX 360, Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii.

Just in case Lady GaGa and Robert Pattinson fans need another way to obsess, their biographies are now being released in comic book form.

“Fame: Lady Gaga” and “Fame: Robert Pattinson,” published by Bluewater Productions, document the stars’ path to fame. In Pattinson’s case, it’s the journey from obscure stage acting in England to pasty-skinned, bed-headed vampire. And in GaGa’s case, it’s growing from a cranky, plain-looking (anyone see her on “Boiling Points”?) nightclub singer into the bizarre pop icon we can’t ignore today.

Comic book biographies might seem odd, but Bluewater has done the same for  Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Sarah Palin, Opah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, Nelson Mandela, and Barbara Walters.

“Fame: Lady GaGa” and “Fame: Robert Pattinson” will be available in comic book stores and on Amazon.com June 9.

And you thought Activision and Guitar Hero were destroying the music game world.

MTV Multiplayer today reports that four songs from Lady Gaga, “Poker Face,” “Just Dance,” “Bad Romance,” “Monster” and the South Park Cartman “Poker Face” version, will arrive in the Rock Band Music Store next week.

Each song will sell for $2 and $6.99 gets you the entire pack.

On top of this heap of oddity, is more Lady Gaga promised for the title. So if you’re upset about the lack of “Paparazzi,” don’t fret, it’ll arrive eventually.

Pop music star Cyndi Lauper and music sensation Lady Gaga are teaming up on a new campaign by joining MAC Cosmetic’s VIVA GLAM program, as the new voices and faces of the campaign to support women battling HIV/AIDS, a campaign that MAC started in 1994. Fergie, Christina Aguilera, Eve, Mary J. Blige and Lil’ Kim have helped to advertise and sell the lipstick line. Every dollar coming from the sale of Viva Glam lipstick and lip gloss is going to the MAC AIDS Fund. The Viva Glam Cyndi and Viva Glam Gaga lipsticks, each for $14, will be available on March 18.

According to HealthDay, Lauper said, “Fighting HIV/AIDS is not a one-woman job. Lady Gaga and I are using our voices as a call to action for women all over the world. I lost a lot of friends to AIDS before we even knew what it was. Today, across the world, women are more likely to become infected with HIV than men. Each one of us needs to do our part to fight for women impacted by HIV and AIDS.”

“We’re raising the VIVA GLAM bar this year with the voices of two incredible artists,” said John Demsey, president of Estee Lauder and chair of the MAC Aids Fund. “Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper are bringing women’s issues to the forefront of the HIV/AIDS crisis. We have one artist that hit the music industry at the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, and another that is explosively popular with young people today. They represent different generations that are equally as affected by this disease, and both are helping to spread the message of the power of one lipstick.”

The program has already raised more than $150 million to combat the disease all over the world, from South Africa to the rural southern United States.

Okay, we may have been unfair about the Lady Gaga and Elton John (though outfits were equally outrageous). That may very well have been the best opening to the Grammys in years. She might bring the word eccentric to a whole new level, but Lady Gaga knows how to work a stage. It was also nice to see respect given to Sir Elton John by transgressing from “Poker Face” to “Speechless” rather than the debauchery last year when Stevie Wonder was coerced into singing “Burnin’ Up” with the Jonas Brothers. New school and old school collaborations are always an interesting event, but it has to be done right.

Taylor Swift picked up a trophy for Best Country Album, but we wonder how believable her super-surprised face will be throughout the night if she gets brought up for any more awards.

Beyonc© also added more Grammy trophies to her tally, but was anyone else thrown off by that performance? Perhaps she might be tired of performing “Single Ladies”, but “If I Were a Boy”? The choice seems odd since it is not an upcoming single and not a reason for her presence at the awards this year. The split off into Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” was also random considering Morissette herself never appeared on stage. Beyonc© delivered a power-house performance as always, but the message was lost in translation on this one.

Multi-nominated Pink also wowed audiences with a flying-high trapeze performance. The stunts were reminiscent of her earlier VMA performance, but even more daring. At one point she was hanging upside down, held up by a thin sheet wrapped around only one leg, dazzling the audience while spraying them with water which had been poured down her body.

The Grammy Board was feeling a little bit country this year, awarding The Zac Brown Band with Best New Artist over indie rockers MGMT and catchy sensations The Ting Tings.

So far the Grammys have gone without any incredibly awkward moments, minus Stephen Colbert’s acceptance speech for Best Comedy Album. His intro remark “Since this is a Christmas album, I should thank Jesus Christ!” which was met with a noticeable silence from the Grammy crowd. His “..for having such an awesome birthday!” attempt at recovery didn’t help much, but alas no one rushed the stage to call him out on it, so consider it still a success.

Kings of Leon pulled a huge upset when they stole Record of the Year out from under Beyonc©, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift for their smash hit, love anthem of the year, “Use Somebody”. This upset may be a game changer for bets on the last award of the night, Album of the Year. Anyone still think it’s going to one of the three ladies of the night?

Still upcoming are performances by Taylor Swift and Bon Jovi (song chosen by voters on cbs.com/grammys), as well as an all-star Michael Jackson tribute presented in 3-D. Welcome to Blast’s (mostly) live coverage of the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. We, like you, are watching the awards from our living room and reporting on the “Oh no!”s and “Wow!”s of the evening to keep you updated.

Tonight has already been set up as a girl’s world with Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga competing for all the top honors. Beyonc© has already claimed four of her 10 nominations, Swift has grabbed two out of her eight with a remaining five hopeful categories, including Best Country Song “White Horse”. Lady Gaga has also tied Swift for two trophies in the pre-telecast awards.

The ladies winning are not a sure thing though. Kings of Leon, who have already picked up a Best Rock Song trophy, could pull an upset in the Record of the Year category, and don’t forget party-jammers Black Eyed Peas who are also nominated for the biggest award of the evening.

Tonight feels like it might be the night for Beyonc© as far as awards go, but with the relevancy of the Grammy Awards up for debate, Blast is interested in a few other things besides trophies. Will Elton John manage to look more flamboyant in his intro with Lady Gaga? How many people will get poked in the eye by her outfit? How much money did the Michael Jackson estate rack up on those 3-D glasses from Target? Apparently it’s female reign at the Grammy Awards this year. Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Beyonc© were the popular names on the Grammy nomination list last night. Former Destiny’s Child front-woman leads all this year with 10 nominations, followed by Swift with 8. Gaga is nominated for Best Record, Best Album, and Best Song with them as well as two other nominations. The Black Eyed Peas and Kings of Leon also scored multiple nominations for the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. A full list of nominees can be found here.

Awards will be given out January 31, 2010 in Los Angeles.

Lady Gaga’s next album, The Fame Monster, will be released in three versions — a standard version of the new 8-song album, a deluxe version which includes both The Fame Monster and her massively successful debut album The Fame, and a collector’s edition super-deluxe art book version, which includes both albums, fanzines, 3-D glasses, paper dolls, a puzzle, pictorials, a lock of Lady Gaga’s hair and other surprises.

“In the midst of my creative journey composing The Fame Monster, there came an exciting revelation that this was in fact my sophomore album,” Lady Gaga said in a statement. “I would not add, nor take away any songs from this EP; it is a complete conceptual and musical body of work that can stand on its own two feet.”

The standard and deluxe versions of The Fame Monster will be released on November 23. The collector’s edition super-deluxe version will be released on December 15.

Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” “LoveGame” and “Paparazzi” have all been #1 hits.

Kanye West just can’t stay out of the news for a single day.

At least time it’s for something good.

Kanye and Lady Gaga will get together for a 34-city North American Tour called “Fame Kills.”

The tour kicks off November 10 in Phoenix and will make only one New England stop on December 16 at the DCU Center in Worcester.

We can’t forget that Kanye has sold 15 million albums and won 12 Grammys, even if he has a huge mouth.

Beyonce was the big winner at last night’s MTV Video Music Awards, taking home the big prize of Video of the Year for “Single Ladies”. It seemed to be lady’s night at MTV because Lady Gaga took home the honors for “Best New Artist” while Britney Spears took “Best Pop Video”. Green Day beat out Kings of Leon and Fall Out Boy for Best Rock Video, but the awards were ironically a very insignificant part of last night’s show.

Just in case you have been in a coma for the past 24 hours, the first thing you need to know about last night’s awards is that Kanye West should no longer be allowed on the premises. By Blast calculations, this is the third year that Kanye has publicly displayed his outrage at the MTV selection for an award. This year’s victim was America’s country sweetheart Taylor Swift, who won the first award of the night “Best Female Video.” In outrage that Beyonce didn’t win for “one of the best videos of all time” Kanye rushed the stage, took Taylor’s microphone during her acceptance speech, and proclaimed Beyonce should have been the winner leaving Miss Swift in horrified silence. Twitter explosions and blog frenzies after report that Swift was to be seen sobbing backstage after the debacle.

Outside of the dramatics, the VMAs this year contained a lot of W-t-fness, and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Every cut to Lady Gaga gave viewers a peak at outrageous outfit after outrageous outfit. Apparently being able to see was not a major concern when making fashion decisions. Equally as twisted was her live performance. Gaga performed her latest mega hit “Paparazzi” on the VMA stage. She lived up to her reputation of a fantastic live performance, but the crowd and viewers alike were a little disturbed by Gaga’s literal perception of the paparazzi killing her when she poured blood over her and then pseudo hung herself from the VMA ceiling.

R&B badass Pink also used a harness for her VMA performance, which may have been the most impressive of the night. Pink performed the entire sang, hanging about 50 feet off the ground, flipping around and somersaulting with her trapeze partner. The most amazing part of the stunt was that she was continuing to sing live “" no lip syncing “" as she continuously flipped head over heels.

In fact there wasn’t a bad musical performance the entire night. Taylor Swift was impressive with her take over of the 42nd street subway station and subsequent Times Square performance. Beyonce amazed audiences not only with her fancy leg work but the fact that she didn’t have a wardrobe malfunction visa Janet Jackson at the Superbowl. Jay-Z and Alicia Keys topped off the night with their new duet, but it was the opening of the show that stole most of the attention.

This year’s VMAs kicked off with a Janet Jackson led tribute to her late brother, King of Pop, Michael Jackson. It was touching and very fitting that this year’s awards were dedicated to a man who took music videos to a new height. Dancers recreated moves from the iconic “Thriller” before Janet arose on stage and re-created the moves from “Scream” while Michael’s mirroring performance played on the screen behind. Intermittently throughout the show, props were given to Michael as well as a full trailer of “This Is It”, the film compiled of all the rehearsal footage before his death, which will appear in theatres nationwide on October 28.

Performances really took precedence at the awards. Only five trophies were given out during the actual aired show. Equally as insignificant was host Russell Brand. While admittedly hilarious in his own right, British stand-up comic Brand fell flat as returning host of the awards. While MTV was probably banking on Brand’s gained notoriety over the past year, his brash humor didn’t translate well to the stage. It seemed that producers spent more time cutting to commercial after Brand’s crude punchlines than letting him speak, and that’s when he was brought on stage to introduce anyone at all. Though Brand has conquered television hosting, movies and even the New York Time’s bestseller’s list with his autobiography “My Booky Wook”, hosting just may not be his thing.

Overall, the show was surprisingly entertaining, especially considering the disappointing past couple of years. There wasn’t a boring moment during the entire two and a half hour runtime. Last night’s show was so well put together that it might have actually succeeded in distracting people from the fact that the ceremony is completely irrelevant. Seriously, when was the last time MTV even played a video?
