Space fans are going to be excited by Warner Bros. latest work. When the Space Shuttle Atlantis was recently up in orbit working on the Hubble Telescope, they brought along an IMAX camera to record the entire procedure of repairing the giant telescope.

The nerds in us are wicked excited for this one.

“Hubble 3d” will be released to select IMAX theaters on March 19, 2010, with further availability on April 23 to coincide with the Original Launch of Hubble.

The IMAX camera shot film of the entire repair of the Hubble Telescope. With the shots of the intricate work in space they accomplished, the viewers of this film will feel like their standing in space next to the astronauts.

Said director Tony Myers, “We have waited a long time to get the IMAX camera back into space and finally the opportunity came with the amazing final repair mission of the Hubble Space Telescope.”

The movie will consist of the video shot of repairs and upgrades and even its first images after repairs were completed. This will allow the audience to really appreciate the significance that the Hubble Telescope has been to us over the last 20 years — it’s position above the Earth allows it to see space farther off than any telescope on the ground.

The nerds in us are wicked excited for this one.

Rising Star Media, in a joint venture with National Amusements, Inc. and Soquel Ventures, announced Wednesday that the company will be installing an IMAX theater in Moscow, in an effort to meet the demand on European exhibitors.

The new theater will be built in the Mega Belyadacha regional mall, located in Moscow’s Lyubertsy district, and will utilize IMAX’s new digital projection system. It will be the second IMAX theater in Russia, after the theater in St. Petersburg.

The digital projection system, which was rolled out in 2008, uses hard drive copies of film instead of film prints, to promote more flexibility to the theaters’ schedules, and allows for far more film copies to be made and distributed for IMAX. The process is also much less expensive: rather than a $22,000 70 mm IMAX print, the digital copies will cost $800 to produce.

IMAC CO-CEOs and Co-Chairmen Richard Gelfond and Bradley Wechsler said in a press release that they were very encouraged by the recent demand for IMAX films, both in Europe and elsewhere.

“Our digital projection system has boosted interest from Hollywood studios and exhibitors worldwide, and we’re particularly encouraged by the interest we’re starting to see in Europe,” they said. “Russia continues to play a key role in our European expansion strategy, and we’re pleased to see top exhibitors who are already in the IMAX business open additional IMAX theatres.”

Michael Bay will be shooting key scenes from 2009's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" using IMAX cameras, IMAX Corporation announced today in association with DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures.

Michael Bay will be shooting key scenes from 2009′s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” using IMAX cameras, IMAX Corporation and the studios announced today.

“The extraordinary level of detail and intensity captured by the IMAX camera creates many exciting possibilities for us with this film,” said director Michael Bay in a statement. “IMAX’s all-encompassing format will take this story to a new level, and I am once again very excited to share The IMAX Experience with Transformers fans around the world.”

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” will be released simultaneously in movie cinemas and IMAX worldwide on June 26, 2009.

Sequences shot in traditional 35mm will be digitally re-mastered for the IMAX screen, appearing in a letterbox shape. Scenes shot with IMAX cameras will expand vertically to fill the entire screen.

“The growth of the IMAX theatre network, fueled by the economical benefits of the new IMAX digital system, is driving interest from virtually all of the top studios, which is resulting in more IMAX movies for audiences to enjoy,” said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler.

“Twilight” will fill the November 21 vacancy recently left by the nine-month delay of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.”

According to the vampire flick’s producers at Summit Entertainment, the eagerly anticipated “Twilight” movie release date will be moved up from December 12.

“When Warner Bros. decided to move ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ to the summer of 2009, we saw a unique opportunity to slot in our film which has been gaining tremendous awareness and momentum over the past several months,” Summit said in the statement Friday. “We by no means are trying to fill the shoes of the incredible POTTER franchise for 2008, rather we are just looking to bring the fans of Stephenie Meyer’s incredible book series the film as soon possible from a programming perspective.”

While Summit declines all suggestion that they are trying to replace “Harry Potter” in the holiday season, it looks like “Twilight” is going to be the “it” kids movie of Christmas break. We at Blast speculate that it could soon be filling another big set of shoes that the witches and wizards have left empty … big screen, possibly three-dimensional shoes.

I bet you 10 bucks it's Twilight. Twenty?

IMAX Corporation released a very short, very pointed statement late Thursday night after news broke about the nine month delay of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth installment in the Harry Potter film series.

Trying to keep things upbeat, IMAX says they’re confident a replacement will be found for Harry Potter on the super-big screen this holiday season.

“Reflecting today’s announcement that the release date of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has moved to July 2009, IMAX Corporation confirmed it is already exploring alternative titles for this year’s holiday season and is confident it will secure a solid film for the IMAX theatre network.”

“The Company looks forward to announcing a replacement film as soon as possible.”
