Nostalgia makes me nostalgic for RPGs past--is that a good or a bad thing?

Nostalgia is aptly named, for a few reasons. The idea of the game has existed for over a decade, though development of it on the DS did not begin until much more recently. As you play through the game, you will see a varied set of influences from an expansive and rich period of gaming in the genre–you may have played many of the games Nostalgia’s developers got their muse from, but you’ve probably never played them all together in one place. At times, this makes Nostalgia a special RPG, as it pays tribute to the past while using its own ideas to craft a memorable and long-lasting experience, but at other times, it makes the game feel like Dƒ©jƒ Vu was a more appropriate title than the one on the box.

RPG
Publisher: Ignition
Developer: Matrix Software/Red Entertainment
Oct. 27, 2009

You play as Eddie Brown, the son of world-famous adventurer Gilbert Brown. You’re in search of your father, who has gone missing–the opening to the game finds you in control of Gilbert, so while Eddie isn’t aware of what has occurred, you, the gamer, are. You decide, using the same character traits that make Gilbert who he is, that you will go out on your own to find out what’s happened to dear old dad, and make a name for yourself as an advennturer while you’re at it. Your first task as an adventures involves clearing rats out of London’s sewers–the game uses real-life locales in the 19th century (with a steampunk twist)–and you meet your second party member there, Pad. From there you get your airship, find out a little more info about what happened to your father, and then spend the rest of the game exploring caves, dungeons, towers, ruins, jungles and the skies in search of your father and eventually, as the force capable of defeating an evil organization bent on world domination.

The characters are generally likable, though there are some issues. While there’s no groan-worthy character in your main party, none of them are particularly endearing either–this may have more to do with the dialogue than the characters themselves, as there isn’t that much talking in Nostalgia, or a least, not that much exposition to expand on the character’s personalities. This causes the story to have less of an impact on you, since you don’t have as much of a connection to the characters.

One thing I do enjoy is the fact that a fifth member of the party often joins, and it rotates among many of the game’s important NPCs. While you can’t control them, it’s just one more layer of strategy for your battles, as they either heal you (freeing up your healer for attacking) or are very powerful attackers, which helps you finish battles more quickly. There are stretches in the game where you will always have a fifth person, even if it’s a bunch of different people filling that role.

The story, while predictable at times given its obvious hat-tips to the genre, stands on its own two legs and succeeds, in spite of the lack of particularly interesting characters. Whether you like the characters or not, the game does push you to what to find out more about what is going on in the main story. You also get the chance to flesh out the main characters through side stories: Fiona has memories of a past life, Pad doesn’t know who his mother is, and Melody was an orphan in a village full of wizards–it’s up to you to learn more about them. These side stories open up brand new locations not available to you in the main story, and they also give you chances to take on some difficult bosses and earn loads of experience and money. What’s also nice is that you don’t have to do any of that before beating the last boss–the endgame allows you to continue with your save so you can complete Nostalgia at 100%, regardless of whether you’ve saved the world or not yet.

Setting is a strong point of Nostalgia. The use of real-world locations gives the developers more freedom than you would expect, as they can give their own steampunk version of London, St. Petersburg, or New York. While the cities themselves are not affected much by the steampunk elements, the locations near them–high-tech, secret bases, airships, magic and the like–make the surrounding areas that much cooler to explore. The developers also did a wonderful job with the music in this title. The soundtrack is great, from each city’s respective music that fits the setting–eastern-influenced tracks for Japan and India, fitting jungle tunes and desert songs for South America and Africa–to the battle, boss and dungeon music. It’s one of the highlights of the game, and one of the better RPG soundtracks I’ve heard in awhile.

Graphically, Nostalgia looks much like of Matrix Software’s other DS efforts (Final Fantasy III and Final Fantasy IV) though sometimes it looks better or worse depending on your location. The 3D models are nice to look at though, and the art direction for the game–including enemy, dungeon and town design–works well. Some areas can be a little more boring or graphically behind than other parts of the game, but they don’t detract from the experience too much overall.

The Japanese RPG (finally) makes its way across the ocean. Details and screens inside

This generation has been great and all, but there’s one thing that no one can deny: we’re severely lacking in traditional RPGs that you can play somewhere besides a handheld. The Wii has not been exempt from this either; sure, you’ve got a few tactical RPGs and some action RPGs, and even a few rogue likes, but outside of Final Fantasy IV: The After Years–a WiiWare title that’s like the Mega Man 9 of classic RPGs–there hasn’t been anything brand spanking new to get our attention within the genre.

Ignition, in conjunction with Marvelous Entertainment, aim to change that, as they are bringing Arc Rise Fantasia, a very promising looking turn-based RPG that I’ve been keeping an eye on for ages now, to North America in summer of 2010. The title, developed by Image Epoch (Luminous Arc and its sequel) is turn-based, but has some new twists to it that should keep battles fun and engaging. You are not required to use all of your party members like in most turn-based RPGs, but can instead pick and choose until you use up your Ability Points–there are lots of bonuses for using certain members for certain things too, so there’s a deeper level of strategy than in your traditional turn-based title.

“In Arc Rise Fantasia, we’ve implemented a fun and quick paced battle system to give gamers an enjoyable RPG experience” said Hiroyuki Kanemaru of Image Epoch. “Ignition Entertainment has a great track record with bringing established Japanese experiences to new western audiences and we’re delighted to be able to team up with them to publish Arc Rise Fantasia.”

Check out the first screens for the North American version below, most of which show off characters or some of the bright and colorful effects of the game.

Ignition Entertainment today finally pegged a release date for their upcoming worldwide adventure role-playing-game Nostlagia for the Nintendo DS.

Set your watches, cell-phones and grab a red pen for your calendar. The game hits shelves four days before Halloween or October 27 for those who prefer an exact date.

The game itself is packed with dungeon combat, airship battles, and elusive treasure hunts and was built by developers who brought Final Fantasy III and IV to the DS.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade finally released last week. But today we get a look into the head of developer Vanillaware and get to see and hear first-hand how the studio crafted the artsy 2-D sidescroller and just why we should be excited about the studios’ projects moving forward.
Vanillaware's latest offering is one of the Wii's best games of 2009

After all of the trailers, the wondrous screenshots, and the months of waiting, Vanillaware’s latest game, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, is finally in stores. Now that it’s here though, the question becomes, “Is it any good?” This is a title that has been built-up as the next big thing since the moment it was announced, due to its look as a spiritual successor to Odin Sphere, the fantastic, late-life PS2 RPG, so people expected a lot of it. The short answer: Muramasa is not just a good game, but a great one, as it’s one of the best Wii titles of the year and a necessary addition to any gamer’s library.

There are two separate stories you can play through. You can use either Kisuke, a ninja who has forgotten the crime he is being pursued for, or Momohime, who has had her body possessed by the spirit of a master swordsman. Each storyline has different bosses and weapons you can use, and by playing both of them you can unlock additional swords and endings for each character, giving the title some replay value. The stories in this are solid enough, but they are not the strong suit of the game.

Action/RPG

That distinction would go to, well, everything else. Graphically, the game is stunning. The hand-drawn, animated backgrounds are some of the most stylistic and graphically superior sets in the entire system’s catalog, and look great for any game, not just a Wii one. We’ve noted many times from the trailers that this game looks even better in motion than it does in the screenshots that capture its beauty, but playing the game and seeing it all unfold in front of you is something else. The soundtrack that accompanies this art is fitting; it was created by the same sound team that worked on Odin Sphere, and is made up mostly of atmospheric, Japanese music that occasionally takes it up a notch and introduces newer, faster-paced instrumentation depending on what’s going on in the game world at that time.

Vanillaware cranked the presentation up to 11, but they didn’t spare any expense when it came to gameplay either. You control your character on a 2D plane, fighting enemies that attack and surround you on the ground and in the air. You perform attacks with the A button and special attacks using the B trigger, while jumping is executed by moving the analog stick upward–press it twice to double jump. There are plenty of secrets hidden high up in the levels, so you will want to explore vertically as well as horizontally. Exploration is encouraged in fact, thanks to the game’s design–it’s like a more RPG oriented Metroidvania title, with much faster-paced action. Think Ryu Hayabusa in 2D traversing feudal Japan rather than Transylvania, and you would be close. While there is a lot of backtracking, there are also loads of areas to explore that are off the main path, and many of these areas bring you extra battles (and therefore experience and money) as well as additional items and secret challenge rooms that you can open up only after acquiring the blade specific to that area. These rooms don’t fool around either, as they present you with challenges such as defeating 100 armed monks, or wave after wave of ninja.

On easy, the game is not that difficult. Leveling up and creating swords is your focus here, as well as progressing the story. When you play on the harder difficulty though, the game is significantly different. You can’t just spam the A and B buttons here until everyone on screen is defeated, as you will need to block accordingly and use your special attacks in a more strategic manner; enemies also take much more damage in this mode, so battles will not be as quick. You earn experience and money with each battle, and you can earn bonus experience by avoiding damage, repelling attacks, using Quick Draw attacks–performed by switching blades in the midst of battle to unleash a powerful attack on all enemies in view–and various other objectives. This encourages you to learn the ins and outs of Muramasa’s fighting, as you will progress much faster once you master battling and pick up more experience.

Besides leveling up, there’s another area to progression to pay attention to, and that’s forging swords. There are over 100 blades in total in the game, and you will need to create progressively more powerful ones in order to succeed. The lifespan of a blade is pretty short, as you will unlock the ability to make new ones each time you defeat a boss, and will most likely have created all of the new ones available to you by the time you unlock another major blade. Special attacks often repeat in more powerful swords though, so don’t feel like you need to hold on to an inferior blade just because you’re partial to its special feature. You will also use all of the blades you acquire, sometimes within the same battles, as blades break from taking too much damage, using special attacks, or from blocking incoming attacks. They repair themselves when in your sheath, so they aren’t broken forever, but the best strategy is to sheathe a blade prior to its breaking point–this unleashes the Quick Draw attacks mentioned above–and move on to the next one. Blades are broken up into Long and normal types, with the smaller ones better for quick attacks or aerial fighting, while the longer blades work well for cutting through swaths of enemies at once.

There are three difficulties in Muramasa, and the third is even more intense than the original hard, and is only unlocked by completing the story mode. In Shigurui difficulty, the game plays much like it did on easy, but with one major caveat: no matter your level, you have one hit point the entire game. Now that, my friends, is a challenge mode. Combine this with the multiple endings for each character and the two separate stories, each of which should take you 6-8 hours to complete, and you’ve got yourself a game well worth the price of admission.

Blast Factor: There has not been a better looking game on the Wii this year, and it’s also one of the better playing titles on the system in 2009. Muramasa: The Demon Blade is a must-have for any gamer, as the game’s easier settings allow even those not accustomed to action games to enjoy the story, gameplay and gorgeous graphics, while those looking for a challenge are sure to find it on the two more difficult modes. Highly recommended.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade is available exclusively on the Nintendo Wii, and retails for $49.99

Matrix Software's latest DS RPG blends the real world with fantasy. Plus, sky pirates!

SEATTLE — The Penny Arcade Expo gave me my second taste of Nostalgia, Matrix Software and Ignition’s latest Nintendo DS RPG. After a hands-on go with it at Comic-Con in San Diego and a hands-off demo at PAX, I feel like I’ve got a pretty good handle on what the game is offering, and I like what I know.

You play as Eddie, who is searching for his father in a semi-real, semi-fantasy world. You will visit real world locations such as Cairo and London, but with that embellished, fantasy vibe to them–for example, when you’re in the pyramids in Cairo, you will be attacked by mummies and monsters, and you will fight them off with magic, guns and swords. +1 for going the 19th century, alternate reality‚ steampunk route.

While there are four main characters in your group, there will be other characters you can use at different times in the game, so you get to switch things up a bit as you play. In addition to your standard turn-based battle system (attack, magic, skills, etc.) there are also airship battles. Enemies attack you from all directions while in your airship, and you have to fight back using cannons and weapons attached to the front of your ship. Depending on the placement of the enemy, certain characters will perform better against them–you will want to use a cannon on the side to attack an enemy on your left, for instance, while one directly in front of you is a perfect target for the sword jutting out of your hull. You are graded for your skill in battles, so you will want to figure out the best strategy for tackling opponents in order to secure the best grade.

The airship is used to travel long distances–in the demo, you had to set out from London to Cairo, and since both were in the proximity of their real-world location, finding your destination is not a difficult process (unless you failed geography, of course). The airship is also fully customizable as well, and there are more than one of them to fly around–later airships bring you higher and higher, but the higher you fly, the more difficult your opponents will be. Not only do you have to contend with monsters, but other airship owners–many of them sky pirates–will give chase as well.

It’s tough to gauge how entertaining an RPG can be from just 15-20 minutes of gameplay, but what we do know about Nostalgia looks promising. The game is slated for an October release, and you will want to clear some time off your schedule to play it–without even tackling sidequests, the story is upward of 30-40 hours, which is very long for a DS RPG. We’ll have more info for you as the game nears release, and also a review for you once it hits retail.

12 days until release gives you plenty of time to watch these trailers over, and over, and over...

I know what you’re thinking–another Muramasa trailer? Well, too bad, because each one is a neat little trip through the world Vanillaware has created, and we’re going to bludgeon you over the head with them until you decide that yes, you do want to pay attention to the title. Just to show you how serious we are, today we’re hitting you with two of them, one of them a Showcase trailer and the other Chop Chop, both of them meant to show you just how fluid and fast-paced the combat is. Those combo counts sure are impressive–I topped out at about 100 a few times during my short time with the demo, but that’s nothing as these videos will show you.

Remember, if you like what you see, you can get a copy of the game at the Nintendo World Store in New York a few days before the official launch.

Vanillaware knows style, and this latest trailer is overflowing with it.

At the onset of 2009, we knew about tons of the games that were coming out this year. In my head, I made a short list of the ones I was most looking forward to, either because of their concept, the early information released on the game, or the people who were behind it. For Muramasa: The Demon Blade, all three of those items resonated strongly with me, putting it near the top of that mental list. And now here we are, almost three-fourths of the way through the year and just a few weeks away from the game’s North American release.

Vanillaware (Odin Sphere, GrimGrimoire) know what they are doing when it comes to developing fantastic looking titles, as their previous work and Muramasa’s trailers and screens show. I have seen the game in motion and played it, and honestly, screens don’t do this game justice visually. Hopefully this latest trailer from Ignition will shed some light on it for you though, and let you see that, HD console or no, Muramasa looks to be one of the prettiest and most artistically stunning games of the year on any system. Muramasa will be out in North America on September 8, and we’ll have a review for you right around that time.

The hyped up fighter has some huge opponents to overcome; is it up to the task?

There was a lot of anticipation and build up for the first official next-gen, HD release of SNK’s venerable team fighting game, the King of Fighters. The King of Fighters XII is finally upon us, but the results aren’t quite what all the hype built up to in the past year. With so many other recent choices in the 2D fighting genre, KoFXII has some stiff competition that it simply can’t match up to–especially as a full-priced release.

Fighting
Publisher: Ignition
Developer: SNK Playmore
July 28, 2009

SNK, and especially their Neo Geo console system’s fighters, have always had a special place in the hearts of fighting games fans. Since the early 90′s, SNK’s fighters for their super-priced super system were the main competition to Capcom’s Street Fighter II reign as coin-op and home fighting champ. When SNK decided to create a game that combined a huge portion of their roster (and throw in new characters as well), the King of Fighters was born. It was and remains a team-based combat game, with three fighters on each side.

That legacy continues in KoFXII, but the game has finally made the jump to next gen, HD glory. This was no easy task for the developers, as it meant carefully re-drawing every single character and frame of animation to compensate for the new, much higher resolution. The results are, overall, good, but certainly not as exceptional as fans might have hoped. In direct comparison to BlazBlue and Super Street Fighter II HD Remix, the graphics are noticeably more jagged and less detailed. The animation is excellent though–better than the SF2 Remix–and the action itself is amazingly smooth.

The action is also incredibly retro. If you’ve played a 2D fighter in the last 15 years, you know how to play KoFXII. It’s the same half- and quarter circles, and a few other familiar motions, that have been making rounds in every fighter since the original Street Fighter 2. While most of the Grade-A competition have found ways to evolve, there’s very little here that feels at all different than any other KoF.

Indeed, there’s actually a lot less here than in past KoF games. Though previous iterations often had over 30 combatants, KoFXII offers a paltry 22, and several key favorites are completely absent (notably Fatal Fury 2 hottie ninja, Mai Shiranui), and the two new characters–two female brawlers named Mature and Elizabeth–just aren’t that interesting. It doesn’t help that there’s no story mode whatsoever to help flesh out who these characters are.

In fact, there’s really only one main single player mode–the arcade mode, which is simply a series of five timed bouts and no boss characters. Other than that, you have a training mode and on- and offline versus modes, which makes the game an incredibly hard sell for people who enjoy fighters alone. Online gameplay has its share of issues as well. Though Ignition and SNK have released a patch to smooth out the online play, it’s still not as smooth as other fighters, which is a serious problem for a game where timing and precision are important.

It’s true that KoFXII adds a few new wrinkles to its combat system. There’s a stronger focus on juggling your opponent in the air by stringing combos together. There’s also the new critical counter system that lets you stun an opponent with a perfectly-timed counterattack. A lot of the characters have been retooled for the game as well, and diehard fans might not like the results since some old favorites have actually been toned down.

Blast Factor: The biggest problem with the King of Fighters XII is that there simply isn’t enough of it. There’s a pitiful lack of meaty game modes, the arcade mode is poorly done, the character roster is light for this series, and the presentation isn’t great. For the price, it’s impossible to recommend a game that should and could have just as easily been a $15 download. KoFXII essentially feels like a half-done fighter, where the developers focused purely on the HD graphics and decided to leave the rest of the work for the inevitable sequel.

King of Fighters XII is available for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, and retails for $59.99

Apparently one montage wasn't enough to slake our thirst for montages.

Ignition has sent over yet another trailer for King of Fighters XII, this one a montage of fighting just like the last. We’re tired of the taunting, Ignition! We just want to fight people in awesome ways, like the people in the trailer!

Excuse me while I get distracted looking through the plethora of King of Fighters assets we’ve posted the past few months. I say I’m tired, but it’s the only substitute we have for the real, potentially awesome thing at present.

It’s a pretty good month for fighters, so Ignition is hard at work trying to get you to notice King of Fighters XII and it’s late July release. We’ve shown you lots of character trailers over the past few months, but today we have a fight montage for you that shows off a lot of the types of moves and abilities that make King of Fighters unique, like the various counter and guard attacks. Everyone knows that everything is better when it is in montage form, so prepare to be blown away. By a montage.

Ignition is being very giving to fans of Muramasa. Details inside.

We here at Blast are a bit smitten with Muramasa: The Demon Blade. Why? Well, we like to think we have taste, and we love style, and those of us who played it also loved Odin Sphere, which Muramasa is the spiritual successor to. The game is unarguably one of the most beautiful to grace this generation on any platform, despite appearing on Nintendo’s little white console. Vanillaware, the developer, makes some worthwhile, lengthy games with beautiful narratives, so there’s no reason not to be excited.

I haven’t had a chance to go hands-on with Muramasa, but we did spot Gamestop’s reveal for the preorder goodies. Check this out:

Click to enlarge that pic, (and you will want to). That’s a giant wall scroll for those who preorder. The other news that I thought was good was that Gamestop put a release date of September 1 down for Muramasa, but after speaking to Ignition, I’ve learned that the date is not a release date confirmation. They did say that the game should be out early that month though, so keep your fingers crossed that Gamestop is just psychic.

The legendary fighting game franchise sequel is dropping this summer, but we've got videos today!

The King of Fighters XII, when it launches next month for Xbox 360 and PS3, will likely be the game to get if you’re into the fighting genre, and especially if you’re a fan of the storied franchise.

SNK Playmore really looks to have spent a great deal of time and effort not only in the construction of the whirlwind of a title, with 20 new and 100% hand drawn characters, new combat elements, and a robust online mode, but also in listening to fan-feedback as the developer is letting you decide the cover-art for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the title.

However, what’s on tap today in KOF12 news, are four new and glorious videos depicting characters Athena, Kensou, Chin, and Mature, all doing what they do best: knocking each other around in the digital fighting space. So kick back, turn up your volume, enjoy these frantic fighting videos and be glad you’re playing and not actually fighting.

Ignition sends us even more character videos of the anticipated fighter.

The only thing better than four King of Fighters XII videos is four more King of Fighters XII videos. Luckily for you, that’s just what we have for you here today. If you missed the original set of four, released to us early by Ignition, then you can catch them here.

These are trailers for different characters that are appearing in King of Fighters XII, and this time around we have Raiden, Robert, Ryo, Kim, and then another with Joe and Elizabeth fighting each other.

In addition, we wanted to remind you that the tournament-sponsored by EVO and Sony Computer Entertainment America–for King of Fighters XII is being hosted in Los Angeles on May 30. The 128 contestants will battle in single-elimination for five rounds, and the winner gets to take home a sweet, sweet prize: a King of Fighters XII arcade cabinet, imported from Japan. I’m having flashbacks to playing SNK games in laundromats in my hometown just thinking about it.

If you’re in the Los Angeles area-or can be-the tournament starts at noon and runs until 7 p.m., at the Element in Hollywood, California (official website here).

The most alluring part of a new title on a retail shelf has got to be the box art; for it is here that we are initially either drawn in, or disgusted and repulsed.

One video game publisher, Ignition, has gone to great lengths to ensure that the most fan-coveted and appealing cover makes the final build for the upcoming King of Fighters XII and today, again opened the voting to the masses.

Over on the Ignition forums, two options are being offered to gamers for the PS3 and Xbox 360 specific boxart.‚ This time, the winners of the previous round are going up against the Japanese PS3 and X360 finalists.

Remember, the fate of the universe, or maybe just the KOF12 boxart is in your hands!‚ With great power comes great responsibility.‚ Choose wisely.

Both options are imaged below and once your mind is made up, head over to the Ignition forums to cast your official vote.

The King of Fighters franchise celebrates a milestone 15th anniversary this year, and to celebrate what better way to launch a revision of the storied series in the name of The King of Fighters XII?‚ If you’re a fan of the game, this installment has been on your radar for some time now, but for the rest of us, why should we play this game?

Simple, because Blast has exclusive and action packed character bio videos that even got me excited about a franchise I never took part in.

The theme music for each video is catchy, so catchy you’ve got to be careful how often you listen, but totally worth it in the end.

Below are videos detailing Duo Lon, Ash Crimson, Shen Woo, and Kyo Kusanagi, long before they go public next week.

And if you happen to live in the greater Los Angeles area; a 128 man, free to enter King of Fighters tournament is being held in Hollywood with the winner taking home a limited edition KOF XII arcade cabinet imported from Japan.‚ Sign up here.

I must say, KOF12 was not on my horizon prior to the news developer Ignition has thrown our way, but hey, who doesn’t like a good beat ‘em up fighter?

The waters of RPG are full of danger. This one looks promising though.

Ignition Entertainment and Tecmo today announced NOSTALGIA, a brand new IP due out in September of this year for the very popular DS portable gaming system.

How can a new game be nostalgic you ask?‚ Well, I don’t really know, but the ambitious project aims to show us.

Nostalgia is set in an alternate-reality 19th-century Earth where you’ll play as Eddie, a man from London who corrals a slew of companions onto his Zeppelin to traverse a world full of thrilling danger.

More specifically, you’ll explore mysterious locations; slay a myriad of uniquely interesting creatures, complete tons of quests, and save the world from an “unfathomable evil.”

Unfathomable evil?‚ I have a pretty imaginative mind capable of fathoming some very sinister and precarious situations, but hey, we’ll leave it up to Tecmo to truly frighten me.

Nostalgia is first and foremost an expansive RPG spanning the regions of London, New York, Cairo, Russia, and Africa via your high-flying zeppelin.‚ Nostalgia also offers two methods of combat.‚ The first is the close-combat turn-based style RPG fans are undoubtedly familiar with. ‚ However, the other takes place aboard your vessel and simulates large-scale skirmishes between you and enemy airships.

Most interestingly, Nostalgia is being developed by a think-tank of famed Japanese RPG visionaries with the intent of returning to the glory days of such Japanese titles.

Maybe now the name Eddie can lose its idiotic connotations primarily propagated as a result of hyena character in The Lion King.
