In the past year Rohl has appeared on a number of TV movies and familiar television shows including FOX network’s “Fringe” and ABC’s “V.” Recently, the Canadian native has gone from television to the silver screen In “Red Riding Hood” along side Amanda Seyfried as Seyfried’s character Valerie’s friend Prudence.

“It was interesting, TV shoots faster, we have more to cover in a day,” said Rohl, of the change from television to film. “Films generally shoot slower and you can take more time with them. ‘Red Riding Hood’ was shot really quickly. It was just sort of on a grander scale with more lights, more cameras, and more people.”

Rohl has recently been seen back on the TV with the premiere of AMC’s “The Killing” last week. “The Killing” is the newest of AMC’s collection of critic-favorite cult classics and tells the story of a detective (Mireille Enos) and the residents of a small town as they try to uncover who killed Rosie Larsen.

Rohl plays Sterling, a high school student who was best friends with Rosie before her death.

“She is a young woman with dangerously low self esteem. She tries to find it in all the wrong places. Mainly boys.” She said.

Given the dark nature of “The Killing” it is no surprise that Rohl has found the to be a much different experience from her others.

“With Sterling I had to dig deeper.” She said, “I learned a lot about my process.” But she also believes that there is something familiar about her character, being that she is a teenage girl, dealing with self esteem issues and growing up.

“Every young girl went through that icky self-esteem part of growing up.” Rohl said.

Fortunately “The Killing” filmed in Vancouver where Rohl lives.

“I get to sleep in my own bed at night” she laughed.

Though “The Killing” is only around for thirteen episodes for its first season, Rohl’s career has yet to stop picking up steam. She told Blast we can expect to see her in two other recent projects she has worked on including “Sisters and Brothers” a film which Rohl describes as “structured improv.” directed by Carl Bessai. “Sisters and Brothers” has given Rohl the opportunity to work along side other familiar faces such as former “90210” star Dustin Milligan, “Glee’s” Corey Monteith, Tyler Labine of The CW network’s “Reaper.”

Rohl also revealed some tid-bits about her character in “The Killing” to Blast “She [Sterling] has a secret that she isn’t willing to tell right away.” If that isn’t a reason to have everyone glued to their television screens on Sunday nights we don’t know what is.

Yeah, I'm looking at you Zac Snyder

With today’s Amy Adams casting news, we now have many of the principal actors in the new Superman film, “Superman: Man of Steel.”

Diane Lane will play Martha Kent, Kevin Costner will play Jonathan Kent, Adams will play Lois Lane and Henry Cavill will play the title role.

These all sound great, and I’m excited. Even Cavill, who I’ve never seen and has a different look than I was anticipating, I’m giving that a chance.

However, though more important casting looms, such as Perry White and the main villain, the main part that colors this entire film has already been cast: Zac Snyder is directing the movie.

Yeah. Zac Snyder who directed “300,” “Watchmen” and “Sucker Punch.”

“300″ was awesome action with little else, “Watchmen” deteriorated as it went on and I walked out on “Sucker Punch.”

And this is the guy directing “Superman,” who’s had no legitimate film in thirty years and is due for a relevant rehash akin to “Spider-Man” and “Batman Begins?”

Snyder was actually one of the final two in contention to direct the film. Darren Aronofsky was the other. What???? Why did they go with Snyder?

Because the film has to come out next year. Warner Brothers films will lose the rights to the Superman franchise if they don’t release a Superman film in 2012. When it came down to that , Arronofsky said he couldn’t make a good film under those deadline constraints.

So from the get-go, Warner Brothers is going with the guy who said “Sure! I can make SOME KIND OF MOVIE by then.”

Snyder has proved to have strong visuals and strong action. These likely will give some good elements to the film.

Yet throughout his directing career, Snyder has never had a realistic or relatable character. Not once.

Superman has been on the film back burner because for decades, no director has been able to create a story with him that is compelling, unlike the aforementioned superhero films that drew audiences all across the world in

So Warner Brothers hires the guy who can’t do characters at all to create a film direly in need of a relatable character.

There are some intangibles. The story was written by David Goyer, the writer of the story for “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight.” And the director of those films, Christopher Nolan, is producing the new Superman film.

It’s got a solid cast. But is all that enough to overcompensate for the terrible director they have driving the latest Superman vehicle?

The Blast TV Renewal/Cancelation Scorecard has been updated to indicate this

Fox has just renewed “Fringe” for a 22-episode fourth season, despite its recent posting of a series-low 1.3 in the adults 18-49 demo. Fox executive Kevin Reilly had previously said that if “Fringe” averaged 80% of its previous timeslot average (a 1.6) it would be renewed.

The surprise renewal (we had been predicting its cancelation) likely narrows the odds for “Lie to Me” and “The Chicago Code.”

Fox is touting the shows DVR numbers, where it averages a 2.2 in the demo each week with seven days factored in; its calling “Fringe” the number 1 scripted show on Friday, though thats of debate versus “Blue Bloods” and “CSI: NY” with DVR viewing factored in. Most importantly, Fox is up 38% year over year for Friday.

Against NCAA Basketball, “Fringe” fell to a series low 1.3 in the ad demo and 3.8 million viewers overall. It landed in third place in its times lot. With this latest update in the season-long ratings saga for the beleaguered sci-fi drama, “Fringe” is now nearly certain to be canceled. While Fox President stirred the pot by saying “Fringe” might see a fourth season if it held 80 percent of its Thursday ratings, it has not done so, and its ratings have now sank 40 percent.

It’s time slot lead-in, “Kitchen Nightmares,” outdrew “Fringe” with a 1.5. “Kitchen Nightmares” is a reality show and thus far less expensive to produce.

CBS Friday was devoted to to the NCAA Tournament; those numbers are not final yet. ABC aired “Supernanny” and “What Would You Do;” NBC went with “Dateline” and a re-run of “Who do You Think You Are.”

Since most of the night was repeats, the Tourney or Reality, network averages are below.

CBS (Preliminary): 1.5 demo, 4.5 million viewers

Fox: 1.4 demo, 3.7 million viewers

ABC: 1.3 demo, 4.7 million viewers

NBC: 1.2 demo, 6.1 million viewers

The TV Renewal/Cancellation Scorecard has been updated with these numbers — and one show has moved from definitely being cancelled to toss up!

“Fringe” keeps getting better this season, but it matters little as it faces cancellation with the numbers its pulling on Fridays. Last night’s episode was steady with a 1.5 in the demo. While Kevin Reilly has proclaimed a fondness for the show, it is far more likely to be cancelled than return at those numbers.

“Blue Blood” rose to a 1.9 in the demo, good for its highest ratings in several weeks. A lot of people are high on the “Blue Bloods” will get renewed train while I’ve tried to be pragmatic about it. The 1.9 makes a good case for the show coming back; my gut feeling still calls for cancellation. Boy, its a fun debate that is being raised in the TV renewal/cancellation scorecard.” One things for certain, NBC and ABC would kill for a 1.9 demo in the 10 pm hour a few nights a week, not just Friday. “CSI: NY” was also on the very-high end with a 2.0. “The Defenders” aired its season (and series) finale.

Over on the CW, I was amused that reruns of “Supernatural” and “Smallville” draw about the same numbers of first run CW programs Monday through Wednesday.

8 pm

Kitchen Nightmares: 1.7 demo, 4.1 million viewers

The Defenders: 1.5 demo, 9 million viewers

Supernanny: 1.1 demo, 4 million viewers

Who Do You Think You Are: .9 demo, 3.9 million viewers

*Smallville: .5 demo, 1.5 million viewers

8:30 pm

CSI: NY: 2.0 demo, 11 million viewers

Fringe: 1.5 demo, 3.8 million viewers

Dateline NBC: 1.4 demo, 6.4 million viewers

Primetime: What Would You Do: 1.4 demo, 4.3 million viewers

*Supernatural: .5 demo, 1.3 million viewers

10 pm

Blue Bloods: 1.9 demo, 11.8 million viewers

20/20: 1.6 demo, 5.9 million viewers

NEW UPDATES ARE IN BOLD

We here at Blast follow the television ratings pretty closely (you can check out the previous night’s ratings and analysis of what they mean each afternoon here at Blast), and there’s pretty much only one reason: so we can tell you what’s getting canceled, what’s getting renewed, and frankly, what we’re not sure about.

All that data has been taken–and put into this: Blast’s handy, dandy TV Renewal/Scoreboard. We’re breaking it down into FIVE categories: Definitely Coming Back, Maybe Coming Back, Could Go Either Way, Probably Getting Canceled, Definitely Getting Canceled.

Feel free to stew, disagree, yell and cry in the comments. And check back regularly–we’re going to be updating constantly as new show data comes out, until official renewals/cancellations are announced.

House

*How I Met Your Mother: Renewed for two season by CBS.

Law and Order: SVU

The Mentalist

*The Middle

Mike and Molly

*Modern Family

*NCIS

NCIS: LA

*The Office

*Parks and Recreation

*Private Practice

*Raising Hope

*The Simpsons

Supernatural: It’s the highest-rated show on the CW (besides Smallville, already ending) so its probably not going anywhere unless deals with the cast and crew can’t be worked out.

Survivor

*Two and a Half Men: Even though the show has been renewed for one additional season (and eight episodes slated for production that were canceled this season), further turmoil behind the scenes could ultimately end the show early, despite it being the number one show on CBS.

The Vampire Diaries

PROBABLY COMING BACK

90210

America’s Next Top Model

Body of Proof: It hasn’t been great after its initial outing, but its better than most of ABC’s pathetic freshman class.

CSI: The main show still draws in the high 2.0 on Thursdays, but it’s third in the hour. Look for CBS, the second most watched network on television, to try and reclaim Thursday, by possibly moving CSI and CSI: Miami to Fridays — basically putting them out to pasture.

CSI: Miami: It’s Sunday ratings have perked up; it’s a shoe-in to return, though it may anchor Friday.

Gossip Girl

Kitchen Nightmares: This show draws a pretty weak number on Fridays, but its also stronger than most shows on Friday, and is unscripted, and thus, cheap.

Parenthood: It’s coming in last in its timeslot and still bouncing a lot, but it outdraws anything else on NBC’s schedule.

COULD GO EITHER WAY

Blue Bloods: It bounced up to a 1.9 in the latest ratings, officially confusing the TV Scorecard.

Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior: It aired without a lead-in, but the ratings still sank most recently. That can’t be good, and CBS can’t be happy with this show hovering in the mid-2s, which they envisioned as the latest in a long line of TV franchise expansion. Gut feeling is it’s coming back, if only because its mid-2s are better than anything else CBS has.

CSI: NY: It hit a 2.0 this Friday; that’s a good sign.

Desperate Housewives: It just hit series lows while the cast is seeking raises. Bad sign for an eighth season?

The Good Wife: With its latest ratings, I’d be inclined to say its likely to be canceled. Most would disagree, but the aura of a well-liked and reviewed show can only block out the truth for so long.

Harry’s Law: It keeps falling in the demo, but its been following “Modern Family” repeats and airing against “American Idol.” More telling signs will come after new “Modern Family” airs.

Happy Endings: If it keeps those debut ratings, it comes back. If not?

Hellcats: The CW is consistent, if not stagnant. How to create hits? Cancel unpopular shows and give something new a try. Well what do you cancel if everything’s doing the same? Oh…

Lie to Me: The renewal of “Fringe” has to hurt its chances.

Mr. Sunshine: It limped through its first season, 80% of it without a decent lead-in. Gut says ABC will give it another go round.

Nikita: Same sitch as “Hellcats.”

One Tree Hill: Its ratings are enough to come back, so its pretty much up to the cast. If you had done EIGHT YEARS of that show, would you want another one? I mean, everyone except the guy from Laguna’s Beach.

LIKELY TO BE CANCELED

Brothers and Sisters: It’s latest ratings pretty much seal its fate.

Better with You: It’s just not doing very well, and its recent ratings are too bad for a renewal. It may see its slot replaced by “Mr. Sunshine.”

The Chicago Code: With its latest ratings, its a goner.

Chuck: It’s ratings are just too bad to justify a likelihood for renewal, or even a toss up. The woes that NBC suffers may spare it, but under normal circumstances, its likely to be canceled.

The Event: Sorry fans of this serial, but its certainly not returning with these ratings.

Human Target: Terrible retention out of American Idol, this ones gone.

Law and Order: LA: It’s just not working out.

Mad Love: It’s latest ratings, and the airing of originals surrounded by repeats is not a good sign.

Off the Map: If the ratings didn’t signal this, then its stars joining pilots did. If you’re holding out some hope for this…don’t be stupid.

Outsourced: I would say definitely getting canceled, but you just never know on NBC.

Perfect Couples: It’s main star has been cast in a fall pilot, signifying he’s been released from his contract. Not a good sign.

Rules of Engagement: It’s not holding its own on the schedule this season, and CBS has a history of high expectations for their comedies. It’s never been scheduled consistently and has been shepherded by the network to syndication length — something it should be at by now.

Traffic Light: Terrible ratings; no chance.

V: It ended the season on a low note.

DEFINITELY GETTING CANCELED

Bob’s Burgers: Flew pretty high at first, then became an incredibly fast burnout. Passionate fanbase, all three of them.

The Cape: I liked this one at first; I couldn’t even sit through the third episode. Apparently, no one else could either.

Chase: Already canceled.

The Defenders: The lowest rated show on CBS.

Detroit-1-8-7: That’s 0 for 2 now for Michael Imperioli on ABC.

The Good Guys

Life Unexpected

Live to Dance: This show was pathetically low-rated. Maybe Paula shouldn’t have left AI.

Lone Star

Medium

My Generation

No Ordinary Family: The star of the show is filming a pilot for the fall.

Running Wilde

**Smallville: Final season

The Whole Truth

Will CBS cancel "CSI: NY" or "Blue Bloods?"

Friday’s pretty dreary for network television, and it seems the hot topic for the night is “Will Fringe Survive?” The latest episode of “Fringe” drew a 1.5 rating. That was even with last week, and up from the season low two-weeks ago of 1.4 in the demo.

That however is still unlikely to save “Fringe.” Given statement made previously by Kevin Reilly, the show likely needs at least a 1.6 in the demo to survive.

“Blue Bloods” and “CSI: NY” topped their respective hours with a 1.7 in the demo, but neither is likely to be renewed at those numbers. Will CBS cancel both, or just one? If so, “CSI: NY” is over the syndication number, so is likely more financially feasible.

“Smallville” and “Supernatural” were even last week; they are the most-viewed shows on the CW.

8 pm

Kitchen Nightmares: 1.6 demo, 3.7 million viewers

The Defenders: 1.2 demo, 8.7 million viewers

Who Do You Think You Are: 1.2 demo, 6.1 million viewers

Supernanny: 1.0 demo, 4 million viewers

Smallville: 1.0 demo, 2.5 million viewers

9 pm

CSI: NY: 1.7 demo, 10.8 million viewers

Fringe: 1.5 demo, 4 million viewers

Dateline: 1.3 demo, 5.6 million viewers

What Would You Do: 1.3 demo, 4.6 million viewers

Supernatural: 1.0 demo, 2.1 million viewers

10 pm

Blue Bloods: 1.7 demo, 11.5 million viewers

Dateline: 1.5 demo, 5.8 million viewers

20/20: 1.5 demo, 5.5 million viewers

Will the cult sci-fi drama survive the move to Fridays?

For “Fringe,” the big move to Friday is this week. What it does for the next few weeks will spell whether the show returns for a fourth season or not.

“Fringe” is on the low end of things over at Fox. “Human Target’s” ratings are pretty bad, and it looks likely for cancellation. There is little doubt that “Lie To Me” will be cancelled with its ratings, no matter how many fans quibble over its quality.

So will ”Fringe” survive? At last weeks TCA’s, Fox exec Kevin Reilly said he would be pleased if the show retained 80% of its ratings on Friday. Since the show has been delivering in the 1.8-2.0 demo point range, that means it needs to be in the 1.4-1.6 range.

So how doable is that? Friday is a wasteland for shows–generally where networks send soon-to-be-cancelled shows or those they have little faith in (“Dollhouse.”) Even so, “Fringe” will face “CSI: New York” and “Supernatural.” “CSI” brings in a high 1.0 demo–around 1.8 normally, while “Supernatural” ranges from 1.0-1.2.

Given “Fringe’s” scheduling over the years, there’s no certainty what its potential is. It currently faces “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Office” and the main “CSI” on “Thursday” and pulls a 1.8 normally. Without all that competition, will it go up?

In the show’s first season, when it faced less competition and was the leadout from “House,” the show regularly delivered demos above a 3.0. It’s doubtful it can return to such ratings. With DVRs, it currently hits around 2.2-2.4–so will it hit that live?

Unlikely. Friday is a heavily DVR’d night. But it’s very possible the show will remain near its current ratings on Friday, when it faces less competition, and where its devoted fans will probably follow.

But even if it maintains similar ratings–how honest is Reilly’s word?

Fox generally averages less than a 1.0 demo on Fridays, so a 1.4-1.6 would be kind of a big hit for its Fridays, and help bring their overall ratings for the week up, as opposed to down, as it does on Thursdays.

There’s a lot more questions than that though. Reilly doesn’t want to hint how close to cancellation “Fringe” is, so he gives it a benchmark. But even so, is it practical to keep a show that delivers in the mid-1.0 range?

Right now Fox can put repeats on Fridays at no cost. Sure, the nets overall ratings decline, but again, there is no cost to the network. But “Fringe” costs a few million an episode. If it were to be renewed with such low ratings, it would surely face a sizeable budget cut.

Ultimately, there are a lot of unknowns. When “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” was moved to Fridays, there were similar overtures, and it was cancelled. “Dollhouse” didn’t survive. And there’s a long list of Friday shows that were cancelled.

“Fringe’s” first big test comes Friday. By Saturday afternoon, we’ll have a lot of the info needed to start making conjectures. But its next test will come the following week against new “Supernatural” and “CSI: New York” episodes. After that, we’ll really have a good idea. And soon, we’ll have an idea if “Fringe” will see a fourth season.

Supernatural or Fringe? Fox thinks CW show doesn’t matter

Fox exec calls out the CW's fantasy drama

Fox is moving “Fringe” to Fridays next week, leading some to speculate the show is in danger of cancellation.

However, Fox claimed at the TCA’s this week that the show wasn’t doomed yet; if it could duplicate its Thursday ratings it would perhaps stave off cancellation.

One of the interesting things here, is that “Fringe,” one of the few fantasy shows on television, will now be heading into competition with “Supernatural,” which staked out the Friday at 9 time slot earlier this season. But Fox exec Kevin Reilly doesn’t see a problem.

“Even in genre, that show is not a ratings powerhouse. By the way, is Supernatural on Friday? I’m not sure.” Reilly paused to laugh. “Good to know. So, there’s your answer.”

“Supernatural” has been a steady performer on the CW for years, though doesn’t hit the networks target audience of females 12-34 quite as much as many of its other shows, such as “Gossip Girl” and “Vampire Diaries.” The show was moved to Friday’s this year to make way for “Nikita.” However, the show’s ratings have held steady, and “Supernatural,” along with “Smallville,” have powered Friday to the network’s top rated night in terms of viewers and adults 18-49.

“Fringe” is now in its third season, and has seen considerable declines in its short lifespan. In its first season, it was the top rated new show in the adults 18-49 demo. However, last year it was moved from its post-”House” timeslot, and moved into the much more competitive Thursday at 9 pm timeslot, the same time period occupied last year by “Supernatural.”

So far this year, “Fringe” is one of Fox’s lowest rated television programs, along with “Lie to Me” and “Running Wilde,” which has not received an order for additional episodes, signaling cancellation. “Lie to Me” has also not received an additional order for episodes. It seems “Fringe” has the best shot to survive. If it can bring in about the same ratings it does now, it will represent more than a 40% increase over Friday’s usual fare.

“It’s a fantastic show, and honestly I’d be heartbroken if it went away,” Reilly said.

What do you think? Can “Supernatural” and “Fringe” both survive on Fridays?

1. Breaking Bad

Like “Weeds” before it, albeit in a drama, the third season of “Breaking Bad” highlighted Walt’s change from a man selling drugs for his family to a man that’s a drug dealer. Along the way, Cranston and Aaron Paul, along with the show’s ensemble cast, delivered some of the finest performances on television. An unrelentingly dark and depressing show, the continued evolution of the characters and this show further pushes “Breaking Bad” into a realm with “Mad Men:” one of the best shows of all time.

2. Lost

The final season of “Lost” is just another add on to a show that will be endlessly debated and analyzed. But regardless of the multitudes of fan reactions to the show’s polarizing sixth season, the show delivered an emotionally charged finale that resonates still months after it aired. Toward the end of the season, it began to dawn on me that we wouldn’t be getting the answers many so desperately deserved. But as I re-watched episodes leading up to the show’s final bow, I began to understand, or at least interpret for myself what I believe the writers were attempting to push. We don’t get all the answers in life, and not everything is wrapped in a neat bow at the finish. Instead it’s about the journey, and the changes in ourselves. After six years with some of the most dynamic characters on television and one of the most consistently well-written shows, I’m thankful to have been part of the journey.

3. Mad Men

After three years as the best show on television (sorry “Breaking Bad”), “Mad Men” finally started to show some wear. Just as Don Draper’s life fell into one of despair and uncertainty, mirrored by the unrest of the mid-60’s, the show echoed. But an uneven season still delivered some of the highlights of the show. Just as America began to recognize in the time period featured in the show, these characters began realizing the consequences of their actions, the comeuppance for their decadence and depravity. As America searched for its soul and identity, so did Don. And in the meantime, it delivered one of its finest hours to date: “The Suitcase.” Despite its unevenness, and a somewhat lacking finale, it remains one of the top shows on television. And with “Breaking Bad’s” ineligibility next year (it won’t return in time for the Emmy awards), it will likely collect its fourth consecutive best Emmy, tying it with “The West Wing” and “L.A. Law” for the most ever for a drama series. But even if it doesn’t accomplish that, Hamm’s performance in the aforementioned episode all but guarantees he finally takes home the Emmy that his network coworker Bryan Cranston has (rightfully) won for three years.

4. Vampire Diaries

I struggle with how to categorize this guilty-pleasure show. It doesn’t have the writing, production values or acting caliber as some of the other shows on this list, notably the list’s leaders. But that’s not to say that any of those traits are lacking in this show. It remains one of the most engrossing and tightly plotted shows on television, a horror thrill-ride and teen drama rolled into a strangely complex and remarkably addictive show. Two seasons in, the show has yet to waiver or let up. It’s hard to imagine it can maintain it’s ridiculous pace, but already, “Vampire Diaries” is starting to stack up to some of the all-time great Sci-Fi/fantasy shows: “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “X-Files,” and more. What’s more–it’s consistently just one of the best shows on TV.

5. Sons of Anarchy

In a nutshell, “The Sopranos” on motorcycles. But “Sons” is oh so much more than that, as it mixes a blend of familial loyalty with ruthlessness and insatiable violence. As the M.C. grows it’s kingdom and Jax continues in his rise to power, the third season of this show did little to expand it’s scope like it’s stellar second season, but “Sons” still remains one of the highest quality dramas on television.

6. Fringe

After experiencing moderate success during its first season, this sci-fi show from the mind of J.J Abrams (the creator of another show on this list), poor scheduling has led this show to fly under the radar for the past two seasons. That’s unfortunate, because a show that once started out hoping for comparisons to the “X-Files” has far exceeded all expectations. It’s well written, and its overarching mythology is treading new ground in terms of television science fiction. With strong leads that often go unnoticed by the awards shows and a concisely plotted story, all those BSG fans without a home should look no further than “Fringe.”

7. The Good Wife

Julianna Marguilles delivers the best performance of her career with her subtle and nuanced turn as Alicia Florick in this legal procedural. A show that could have treaded familiar territory and overplayed conventions consistently delivers strong, accessible stories filled with intrigue and first class drama. But more than just a case of the week, the show touches on redemption, faith and forgiveness, with a drawn out story arc as addictive as anything on television.

8. Dexter

Dexter changed head writers between its stellar fourth season and the last year’s fifth, creating even more drama—how could they move on from that finale??? (No spoilers). But the transition was mostly seamless; save some early missteps, the fifth season wove together in a very “Dexterous” fashion, continuing the dive into Dexter’s humanity and psyche, along the way delivering some excellent twists and taut drama.

9. Walking Dead

Look, we knew what we were getting into with this one right? It’s the zombie apocalypse. But unlike a fast-paced movie, the emotional resonance with these characters goes so much deeper in this six-hour first season, making it all the more gut wrenching as they started to die off before their eyes. From acclaimed director Frank Darabont, this show rolls great zombie violence into a fight for survival, tinged with insecurity, uncertainty, and the growing realization that no one is going to make it out alive.

10. Boardwalk Empire

It started off slow, and some of the characters and themes were a little flat. But just before we wrote it off as a 1920’s “Sopranos” wannabe, “Empire” developed a heart and soul. The characters came to life, and a highly compelling drama emerged from the most unlikely of stars, Steve Buscemi that is.

Honorable Mentions

Friday Night Lights

As television drama continues to innovate and change for the sake of upping shock value, this one stays relatively the same. And that’s not a bad thing—FNL remains the best character driven drama on television.

Luther

Despite an uneven first season, this BBC import, led by a brilliant Idris Elba, was one of the better new dramas this year.

In its new timeslot, the fourth season premiere of “Big Bang Theory” drew 14 million viewers and a 4.8 in the 18-49 demo, second highest for the night. It’s strong numbers spilled into William Shatner’s new comedy “$#*! My Dad Says,” which drew 12.5 million viewers and a 3.9 in the demo for it’s premiere. The 11th season of CSI premiered to 14.5 million viewers and a 3.4 rating; the third season of “The Mentalist” debuted to 15 million viewers, the highest for any series Thursday, and a 3.3 rating.

On ABC, “Grey’s Anatomy” drew a 5.3 rating, highest for the night, and 14 million viewers for it’s seventh season premiere. Sister show “Private Practice” bowed to a 3.3 rating and 9 million viewers. It wasn’t all good news for ABC though; new 8 p.m. drama “My Generation” floundered out of the gate to a 1.6 rating and 5.2 million viewers. ABC finished second in both categories for Thursday.

NBC didn’t have much luck either. The seventh season of “The Office” logged typically strong numbers, drawing 8.5 million viewers and a 4.3 in the demo, second for 9 p.m. hour. New comedy “Outsourced” had a strong premiere as well, pulling in 7.4 million viewers and a 3.5 in the demo, second in the 9:30 timeslot. At 8 p.m. “Community” was back in third place with a 2.2 rating and 6 million viewers; “30 Rock” drew a 2.6 and 5.5 million viewers at 8:30. The peacock finished last in the 10 p.m. hour, with “The Apprentice” logging a 1.6 rating and 3.8 million viewers.

Fox had its ups and downs with “Bones” pulling a 2.7 and 9.8 million viewers at 8 p.m., good for second place, while “Fringe” was in fourth at 9 p.m. with a 2.1 and 5.9 million viewers. Fox landed in fourth for the night. The CW was also typically in back: “The Vampire Diaries” drew 3.6 million viewers and a 1.6 rating while “Nikita” managed 3.2 million viewers and a 1.1 rating.

Millennials: Expand your horizons

Generation Y and Millennials have made a few shows extremely successful (Glee), but there’s more to life than singing and dancing.

Here are the top five television shows that aren’t new, but that you probably haven’t seen yet.

And you should…

5. Cougar Town

This witty little show suffers from a poor title, causing many not to tune in. From the outside, it seems as if the show is driven by Jules’ (Courteney Cox) pursuit of younger men. However, after a rocky start, the show has developed into a broader ensemble comedy, featuring strong interplay from the seven main characters. Like creator Bill Lawrence’s previous work Scrubs, the show is an examination of the lives of its main characters from a humorous and moderately satirical perspective. The show revolves around Jules best friend Ellie and her husband Andy, her neighbor Grayson, her ex-husband Bobby, and her 18 year-old son Travis. It features the same witty dialogue and biting remarks of Scrubs.

Season 2 premieres Wednesday.

4. Fringe

Set within the FBI’s Fringe Division, this show follows FBI Agent Olivia Dunham and her team as they pursue mysteries involving “fringe science.” Involving the extreme possibilities of scientific fields, Dunham’s team, which includes scientists Walter and Peter Bishop, investigate psychic phenomena, teleportation, alternate universes and other tasks in search of “the pattern.” Rich with mythology and created by television auteur J.J. Abrams, the show borrows elements from previous Abrams shows “Lost” and “Alias,” with some themes from “The X-Files” and “The Twilight Show.”

Season 3 of Fringe premieres Thursday.

3. Supernatural

A long running show about brothers Sam and Dean Winchester traveling around the country facing elements of the supernatural. Last season, the show completed a storyline that had been evolving for the five seasons of the show which dealt with demons, hell, heaven, God and the Devil while focusing on themes of brotherhood and destiny. With a killer classic rock soundtrack and more action than most shows on network television, it’s a well produced show that consistently delivers.

Season 6 of Supernatural premieres Friday.

2. The Good Wife

It may seem like an odd choice, but this show about Alicia Florick, the wife of a disgraced politician is a great weekly legal drama. Alicia has returned to practicing law after her husband is sent to prison, as a means to support her family. The stories are fresh, and there’s plenty of intrigue within Alicia’s law firm and the crimes that sent her husband to prison in the first place. The show also featured the breakout performance of Archie Panjabi, her who won an Emmy this year portraying Kalinda Sharma, a deeply interesting private investigator employed by Alicia’s law firm. For a good weekly drama in the vein of CSI or NCIS, tune in.

Season 2 of The Good Wife premieres September 28.

The Vampire Diaries

When the Vampire Diaries premiered, many thought it was another offering in the vampire craze, following “Twilight” and “True Blood.” But over the course of it’s first season, the mythology of the show deepened, and this became one of the more satisfying supernatural dramas on television, reminiscent of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” The show is interesting every week, and delivers one or two twists most weeks as well. The plot is pretty involved, but the show has only progressed one season in, so plenty of time to catch up.

We’ve given the show plenty of press. Have you been listening?

Season 2 of the Vampire Diaries premiered September 9.

Tonights premieres: “SuperNanny” on ABC at 8 and “White Collar” on USA Network at 10.

We are in the age of the “Gleek,” baby. FOX will release the first 13-episodes of the musical drama “Glee” on DVD by the end of the year, Variety reports. “Glee Season One: Road to Sections,” will be available December 29 with a director’s cut of the pilot and lots of special features.

Sebastian Roche will join FOX’s “Fringe” as a bad guy — a solider from another universe who’s part machine.

Lisa Kudrow will jump into a new project. She’s working with Dan Bucatinsky to develop a comedy for Showtimw based on the memior “Why the Long Face?: The Adventures of a Truly Independent Actor,” by Craig Chester. The show, for now called “Rapture,” chronicles the actor’s upbringing as the gay son of a religious household.

Adult Swim approved a pilot for a live action comedy produced by Conan O’Brien’s company. The show, “Eagleheart,” is about a washed up action star who gets a TV show.

Sarah Shahi will top the pilot for “Facing Kate,” for USA Network. She was previously the female lead on NBC’s “Life,” Cynopsis reports.

Finally, “Dollhouse” is not being included in the November sweeps for FOX due to poor ratings for the now struggling show — the latest Joss Whedon show with a rabid fan base that never seems to watch the damn show when it’s on TV.

Don't have time? DVR it. Don't have a DVR? Buy one.

In a world where endless cop shows, doctor shows, and lawyer shows do battle for primetime network TV slots, some shows dare to be different. These shows are quirky, creative, clever, and under-watched. Here I give you a by no means comprehensive list of the best shows you’re not watching.

1. Sons of Anarchy

Hamlet on motorcycles meets “You had me at hello.” A tough-as-nails motorcycle gang keeps the peace and organizes the crime in the town of Charming. Each week the Sons of Anarchy defend their turf against rival gangs, butt heads with city hall, and take the law into their own hands”¦ and it’s all based on the Shakespearean classic. Catch it on FX, Tuesdays at 10 p.m.

2. Glee

“Glee” is by far one of the most delightfully hilarious shows on television. It’s a musical satire about the high school caste system. An optimistic teacher revives the school’s glee club, but has a little trouble on the way with the “Cheerios” captain, his “pregnant” wife and talented kids who don’t have enough confidence. With hilariously stereotypical characters and over-the-top musical numbers in every episode, it’s basically an accurate and serious representation of high school. Wednesdays at 9 on Fox.

3. Fringe

Don’t believe the commercials. If you do, you think that “Fringe” is simply “CSI: Boston.” But spend one episode following FBI agent Olivia Dunham and you’ll find that that couldn’t be further from the truth. Somebody is experimenting on the world, using bizarre science”"astral projection, genetic engineering, pyrokinesis, the works. A team of FBI agents headed up by Dunham called the “Fringe” division (including a real life mad scientist and his son) is trying to figure out why. Each week the unexplainable, unbelievable and disturbing lead our group of intrepid, world-saving believers further down the rabbit hole. It comes on Thursdays at 9 on Fox.

4. Parks and Recreation

Don’t listen to the nay-sayers who claim that Amy Poehler’s “Parks and Rec” is just her playing Michael Scott. Poehler, famous for “Baby Mama” and her various roles on “SNL,” takes her comedy to the next level in this show. Using the same documentary style as “The Office,” viewers get to take a look inside the world of the Parks and Recreation Department of Pawnee, Illinois. Poehler plays well-meaning but hopelessly clueless mid-level politician Leslie Knope. She is joined on the cast by fellow comedians Aziz Ansari (“Funny People”), Rashida Jones (“The Office”) and Aubrey Plaza (“Funny People). It comes on Thursdays at 8:30 on NBC

5. Flash Forward

Everyone in the world blacks out for 2 minutes and 18 seconds while they have a vision of their individual futures. Why? No one knows. And that’s not even the weirdest part. Thursdays at 8 on ABC.

Is nobody watching your favorite show? Tell us! In these days of repetitive programming, no good show should go unwatched.

Markowitz and Burk to executive produce 30-minute project

Details are sparse, but Blast has learned that FOX is interested in a new J.J. Abrams series.

Abrams’ company, Bad Robot Productions, will be teaming with Warner Bros. Television for a 30-minute medical-themed comedy.

There’s no title yet and no word on casting, but we know that Mike Markowitz (“Becker”) will be writing the show and executive producing. Bryan Burk, from Bad Robot, will also executive produce.

J.J. Abrams’s Bad Robot also produces the FOX drama “Fringe,” and Abrams made the recently successful Star Trek reboot.

Blast reports on the "Fringe" panel at Comic-Con.

SAN DIEGO — There is one thing certain, “Fringe” the Fox television show, is not the typical science fiction series. A year ago, this edgy drama introduced audiences to a taboo area of science termed “fringe science.” Its focus and practices include genetically mutated humans, deadly dreams, necromancy and teleportation. Though often compared to another beloved Fox series, “X-Files” the show takes the paranormal to a heightened level.

With the stars and its producers at day three of Comic-Con International, Blast sat in and discussed
“Fringe’s” upcoming season and characters. The panel included J.H. Wyman, writers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman and followed by cast members Joshua Jackson, Jasika Nicole, John Noble, and Anna Torv.

The second season of “Fringe” has already been plotted out by the, Wyman said.

“Peter (Bishop) is going to learn a lot about his existence, who he is,” Wyman said. “We have many things we have that we want to bank out here as a character, and then actually make him the hero he needs and wants to become.”

Wyman explained the fate of Peter (Joshua Jackson) who ended the season with a cliffhanger, leaving fans wondering about his identity. “There are many things beyond the ideas of aliens” Wyman responded to the “no alien” stance from the show’s writers.

“The keys in the character and what is happening with the show and how it’s different than last year, is that we’re actually looking at the first season as a prologue” Wyman said.

The basic theme of science, it’s catastrophic and uncontrollable nature, is the angle the show has taken and molded since it started last year. What makes it interesting is finding the show is developing its own groove.

“You’re really going to fall in love, this year we work with Walter’s emancipation,” Wyman said. “Peter is going to start to come into his own, and develop in an internal way … it’s really all delicious.”

The series tries to transcend science and be a show about people, building on the back stories of the characters. The writers described Peter and Olivia’s (Anna Torv) relationship as a “brother and sister” pairing.

There are no current plans to develop any romantic storylines between the characters at the moment, which in many ways is a godsend. What makes “Fringe” one of the most successful pilots is its focus on adding drama with the occasional humorous banter. Family also plays a pivotal role especially between Peter and his formally estranged father.

Joshua Jackson gave his views on the relationship between father and son: “There’s always this state of play,” he said. “The big reveal in the end of the season will inevitably lead to break up, until that break up we’ll see them getting closer and closer.”

The strength of “Fringe” is its ability to explore uncharted realms of science, bring them to life, and through it provide a mirror to the world and lives of its characters.

“Fringe” airs at 9 p.m. Thursday nights on Fox.

Joshua Jackson might now be the star of J.J. Abrams' new sci-fi drama "Fringe," but we "Grey's Anatomy" fans out there remember a time not so long ago where Jackson was supposed to be the new dreamy doctor at Seattle's Grace.

NEW YORK — Joshua Jackson might now be the star of J.J. Abrams’ new sci-fi drama “Fringe,” but we “Grey’s Anatomy” fans out there remember a time not so long ago where Jackson was supposed to be the new dreamy doctor at Seattle’s Grace.

Though the “Fringe” roundtable interview with Jackson at New York Comic-Con didn’t leave much of an opportunity to get a question in edgewise about “Grey’s” versus “Fringe,” I got the opportunity to talk to Jackson before he was rushed off to the “Fringe” panel.

After informing him how, as enjoyable as Kevin McKidd is on the show, I couldn’t help but watch and think how much different (and better?) the show could have been with him on it, he wistfully responded with, “You know, the day we were supposed to start filming was the day the writer’s strike began.”

It is clear that Jackson is in his element on “Fringe.” If you watch our video clips from the interview, he is off at 100 miles a minute about the intricate nature of the science of the show.

Declaring that “The X-Files” was one of his favorite shows ever and comparing the hidden connections of “Fringe” to how Beastmaster’s third sword was the same as He-Man’s, (“Because it was,” he assured us) it is clear that a sci-fi show could be more up his alley than the adult, hospital version of “Dawson’s Creek.”

He did assure me he regretted not having the opportunity to work alongside Christina Oh – he was supposed to be her love interest in “Grey’s Anatomy” until filming was put on hold due to the strike and he eventually went to “Fringe” and McKidd replaced his character – and he would take any future project where he could work with her.

Maybe if Shonda Rhymes ever does make a second spin-off starring Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh’s “Grey’s Anatomy” character) she could give Jackson a call and have one of her characters live happily ever after. That is, if she doesn’t decide to make a spin-off where Izzie and George (if T.R. Knight gets the same send-off it looks like Katherine Heigl is being sent towards) hang out with Denny Duquette and Ellis Grey and ride unicorns across rainbows over rivers of chocolate joy. Both options seem entirely plausible at this point.
