This week is another celebration of all things retro. A new old-school beat ’em up makes it way to eShop and Kirby and a few other gems from the past time travel to your 3DS and Wii consoles.

3DS eShop
Johnny Kung Fu (UFO Interactive, $5.99)

A throwback to side-scrolling beat ’em ups of yesteryear, Johnny Kung Fu tells the classic story of a young man fighting his way through mobs of bad guys to save his beloved girlfriend. The game mixes various old-school features and throwbacks to create a new experience.

Sweet Memories – Black Jack (Circle Entertainment, $3.99)

If you thought playing black jack demanded all your attention, try playing a game in front of a group of cute girls. This bizarre-sounding title has you winning at cards and  scoring a potential date with an anime girl you once knew.

Kirby’s Pinball Land (Nintendo, $3.99)

Celebrations for Kirby’s 25th anniversary are still underway, and this title sees the pink ball of love part-timing as a pinball in his own pinball game. Help Kirby defeat his foes by flipping flippers and bumping into bumpers in pinball worlds of Dream Land.

The Sword of Hope II (Kemco, $2.99)

Take a trip back in time when RPGs were really simple and only consisted of a few commands you had to input with this Game Boy game.

DSiWare
Candle Route (Teyon, $1.99/200 pts)

Sparky lives in a colorful crayon-colored world that needs his help of corralling candles and taking them to Crayon Castle. The game takes you through different puzzle-like levels that only give you a few number of moves you can make, so survey the area and use your taps wisely.

Ace Mathician (Circle Entertainment, $1.99/200 pts)

Remember sitting through math class and having to remember formulas and equations? This platform game doesn’t require you to remember what any of them do, but every formula you alter creates different platforms and affects your world in different ways.

WiiWare
Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition (Konami, 700 pts)

Frogger is back with brand new features while still preserving its classic old-school feel. Hyper Arcade Edition features modes like Tile Capture, Battle Royale, Freak Out, and more and also includes 4-player multiplayer. Crossing the road has evolved.

The King of Fighters ’96 (D4 Enterprise, 900 pts)

Fight your way through the later 90s with this classic SNK fighting game. Sure you could pop in a copy of King of Fighters 13, but if you want to take a trip back in time, why not head to 1996?

Game of the Weekend
Mighty Switch Force! (WayForward, $2.99)

Each week, Nintendo will be making select games available at a discount. This week’s pick is all about making platforms appear and disappear. The game has you jumping through different levels, dodging enemies, and switching platforms, to find and apprehend Space Hooligans that are wrecking havoc all over Planet Land. The game is on sale for $2.99 until Sunday, July 15 at 9 pm PST.
